    So, we are being screwed and we are sheep... So the Illuminati are screwing sheep?
    You would think with all that money and power they could do better...
    Or is there something about sheep that's being kept from the common people?

    Off topic: when I watch the /. homepage, I am logged in. As soon as I click on a story, I become an Anonymous Coward. Did anybody else experience this bug too?

    Some would see this as a super power... of course they're already trolls, but mighty trolls with super powers.
    Seriously, I've seen something like this in FF with some privacy plugins, but it's been awhile.

    Use a long cable and perform the entire operation with the drive running in the freezer. Nothing sucks worse than getting half the data off, only to have the drive overheat again.

    I took this a step farther with an 18" PATA cable and a couple 3 Lb. blocks of dry ice (local supermarkets often sell it). It took forever but I got my data copied off... and yes beware of condensation, use ziptop freezer bags around the drive and rubberband them flat to get all posible air away from the drive before cooling. I let my drives get pretty cold before I spun them up using a PATA to USB cable and stand alone power block. I was too chicken to risk the IDE controller on the mobo. After getting my data I scrapped the drive, I would never trust it again.

    Well, without failed forks, false starts, and unfruitful developments evolution would not work...
    When Homo erectus appeared on the evolutionary scene I'm sure there were plenty of knuckle walkers commenting things like "Oh, walking around with his head up he'll miss all the juicy bugs on the ground." and "Standing that tall he will run into a tree limb and kill himself." Of course in those days moderation was a rock to the head so they may not have expressed their opinions to others.

    When the failures stop, evolution has stalled. Progress is made by people that are willing to do something, even if it turns out sub-optimally.

    This thing has a Vista-rushed-to-market feel about it.

    I agree. Every other roll out MS has done was a money grab. 98 should have been 98SE, ME should have been XP. Vista should have been 7. I have been telling people for a year to avoid 8 until it is 8+ or whatever. Of course they would avoid using "+" on anything because it might bring Google to mind... but if history is any gauge 8 will suck so hard you'll need a CRT to avoid screen puckering.

    And it is at this point that we need to let the moderation "Funny" go past the 5 limit... sure there are many informative and insightful posts but once you hit 5 everyone gets it. Humor, however, can do amazing things including allegedly healing people. Also it has been proven to sometimes cause fluids to suddenly appear on monitor screens, keyboards, clothing, and furniture.

    That post was at least an 8...

    That's exactly correct. I've known people that literally got out naked (having been asleep), but they got out of a fire alive. If you know the fire is a risk and you can't replace the hardware for lack of insurance then the move should already be happening now...
    "We moved all the stuff for no reason" beats "We lost everything because we waited" every time in the Thoughts of Tomorrow game.
