Some of the newest, most advanced nuclear reactors are being used in the US's Navy on board submarines and aircraft carriers. I'm a mechanical engineer at Electric Boat, and every day I'm surrounded by submarines with nuclear reactors on board. Most of them are developed by General Electric and Westinghouse, and not the product of some "secret" organization that would cause the public to be dubious about.

These things are clean, safe, and reliable. Old reactor technology was shaky at first... heck, I'm amazed people were able to design them without much for computing power.

I'm a fairly skeptical person, but I have more fear of a doctors or dentist's x-ray unit malfunctioning than I do of nuclear radiation.

I remember an article a while ago about determining what's displayed onscreen based on the electron guns in the monitor. My ViewSonic, which is relatively new, but on the cheap end, makes a barely audible high pitched whine that varies with the brightness and area of what's displayed. It's not nearly enough for a person to determine what's on the screen, but perhaps some tuned sensors could.

  8. Remember, don't confuse efficiency with economy! on Hybrid Cars Don't Live Up to Mileage Claims · · Score: 1

Fuel efficiency and fuel economy are 2 very different things!!! Many more factors affect fuel economy (MPG). Think about it, they are not interchangeable words. An efficient car is one that will typically pollute less per gallon burned. An economic car will get more miles per gallon, but that's largely due to f=ma than engine efficiency.

I'm an Audi driver myself, and I love the VW/Audi lineup. They sell a TDI (Turbo Direct Injection, for those not up to speed) equipped A4 in Eurupe, but not in the US.

There are 2 reasons why diesel isn't popular. 1 is because of it's stodgy, noisy, smelly, and shaky public image. That's not true anymore, but the image lingers. The other reason is because of CARB. California Air Research Board. You CANNOT buy a new passenger diesel car in 2004 in states which follow CARB regulations (instead of EPA regs) Those states are CA, NY, VT, MA, and ME. A very large percentage indeed.

  10. EPA Figures have always been flawed on Hybrid Cars Don't Live Up to Mileage Claims · · Score: 1

Mainly because they're over simplifed. There are too many variables in driving that will dictate your fuel mileage. Even air temperature, pressure, and humidity can easily change a normal car's gas mileage by a few MPG. Add in other factors, like road contitions, tires, driving style, windy locations, or large variations in cargo/passengers. Even a poor alignment or underinflated tires can drastically affect your mileage.
It's a huge oversimplification to put "city" and "highway" MPG figures on a car. The only thing it's got going for it is that it's usually a standardized, and therefore easily comparable test. Though from what I've heard, the EPA's testing methods are flawed as well.

It's a shame that I have to be treated like a 3 year old and have pointy objects taken away from me for the placebo of the nation. If someone wants to hurt somone else, they'll do it.

Frankly, I wouldn't stab someone with my knife because I care more about it than other people. But I'm also respectful of other people, so I wouldn't hurt them regardless of a samll sharp object that's within reach.

that aren't particularly vulnerable to being offshored. I'm in the submarine business, and due to obvious national security issues, my job will never be offshored. Not even given to foreign nationals in this country. As are a lot of other high-tech jobs in the defense industry. Don't forget that a lot of computer scientist/engineers move on from the defense industry to the private sector, as well as a HUGE number of public suppliers for the defense industry that must also remain local.

And yes, the computer type jobs may well not be worth it to get a degree for, other tech jobs are, such as the old-fashioned fundamental degrees. I'm a Mech E, and it's the type of thing I really couldn't learn on my own; unlike a lot of computer science. If you're going into computer science, college may very well not be worth the time/money vs. building skills or a private business on your own. As for other Engineering type degrees, this is usually not the case.

Half the geek world wanted it on DVD, even without special features. But that just meant that there'd be a full featured version later. And then you'd slam him for being a money grubber. I'm a Star Wars fan myself, but FWIW, it's Lucas' story, and you all bought into it. You don't have to buy it.

  25. How is any of this relevant? on 4 Tons Of Plants per Mile to Ride In Your Car · · Score: 1

I think we should all look beyond the fossil fuel issue here, and the semantics of how these numbers might be "fraudulent" and how everyone else is "ignorant." Bottom line is that we're a world based on fossil fuels. And yelling at people who buy large SUVs is the cliche thing to do recently, but it does little to nothing to help. Nobody regulates how far you drive, or how often you drive, because it's up to you to pay for it. If your conscience pushes you to not use fossil fuels, good for you. You're the vegan of energy usage. You can't guilt a society into fundamental change.
As human beings, we're plenty smart. When the time comes to adjust our energy uses to something new, we'll figure out a way. But there's no use wasting all of our own time, energy, and effort bickering and arguing and lobbying to kick the guy out of his SUV. My co worker drives 86 miles one-way to work, 5 days a week. I drive 12. But if I had an SUV, I'd be "evil" and the "wasteful American." Well, good for you. Go do your own research, and save your own gas money.
