  1. Re:What's the fuzz all about on Microsoft vs. Slashdot Update · · Score: 1

Something about some license agreement you have to agree to in order to view the MS Kerberos spec. I'm not sure what they are talking about since I just downloaded the file from MS's web site, opened it up in Winzip (for some stupid reason it was a zipped executable and I certainly don't go running executables from untrusted sources! Ever hear of trojans!?) and then extracted the pdf file within. I don't see what the big deal is.

  2. A vicious cycle on Mitnick Ordered Off Lecture Circuit · · Score: 1

I've always wondered that too. Convicted felons often have trouble finding legitimate steady work because either a) companies don't want criminals working for them or b) they are prohibited from working in a particular field because of their crime (computers, health care, working with children, etc.). So what do they end up doing? MAYBE get a job at McDonalds if they are lucky but even then Mitnick is screwed since they have computerized cash registers. ;-) How can someone prohibited from working with computers of any kind continue to work at ALL in today's society? He'd need to find some old stingy luddite to work for and do everything on pencil and paper without using a calculator. It's simply ridiculous that they can do this.

What if you were to take some kind of new fangled cable, let's call this hypothetical material "fiber optic cable", and string that around in the ceiling. You could potentially send these strange beams of light that you call "lasers" through the "fiber optic cable" without needing to worry about spiders and rodents scurrying into the beam. You would also cut down on conduit costs and the chance of not aiming the laser correctly down the chute to the next mirror/prism in the chain. This amazing technology could perhaps go hundreds, maybe even THOUSANDS of meters all without worrying about fog and rain affecting it.

  5. Is anyone else getting tired of this? on "TV" TLD Sells For $50 Million · · Score: 1

IMHO if a country wants to waive their right to their TLD, fine, you can. If you try to sell it then it should instantly fall back to ownership by a non-profit organization or removed from the DNS heirarchy completely. Countries were assigned a TLD for the purpose of organizing their Internet companies within that domain, NOT to go off and sell it to some shady company. There should've been a clause on the whole thing that country TLD's must be owned and operated by the governments or a representative of the government to which it applies in the best Interests of establishing a country-level TLD heirarchy. No, I'm not a lawyer and I don't speak their jargon. I'm sure there is a way to word it though that stops these stupid sales from happening like .cx, and .nu. It destroys the cultural identity of a sovereign nation when they just go off like that and throw their domain away. If you don't want your domain, fine, we will delete it from DNS so no one will abuse it.

  6. RFC's are ignored now on "TV" TLD Sells For $50 Million · · Score: 1

The relevant RFC's have been ignored since big businesses started getting on the net and Network Solutions started whoring domains like they were property on the beach. Why do you think their motto is to make sure to register the .net and .org domains along with that shiny new .com you're registering? If there was such a thing as a scheme, it is long since been thrown away. There are tons of third world countries that would rather sell their stupid 2 letter TLD for millions of dollars than have their people starving in huts without running water OR electricity, much less Internet access!

  7. Moderation system not good enough. on Textmode Quake · · Score: 1

All the moderators can do is simply use one of their points to bring it down a point. The trouble is, every point you use to bring DOWN a comment is one less you can use to bring up a very insightful comment. I have taken the stance to only use my moderator points to make POSITIVE adjustments to scores as much as I can. This is in order to make sure the good comments get up to 2 or 3 and are seen by people reading at a higher level to avoid the idiotic trolls at -1, 0, and 1. So, basically the reason you see these trolls is they post TONS of this garbage. What is a moderator to do? Waste all 5 of his points on moderating 5 troll messages down or use them to moderate 5 good posts up leaving the trolls at AC default of 0? The trolls do it because they KNOW this is how the system works. They can post the same message over and over 100-200 times and we can either: a) ignore it, b) have all the moderators spend all their points to moderate them to -1. Personally I'd like to just see a "kill troll" button as a moderator that would immediately drop the post down to a -1 and would cause slashdot to ignore any attempts to post from that same IP for 30 minutes. It has a very big chance of being abused but it would be SO much better to just go down the page and hit a kill troll button and wipe out that message and the entire thread beneath it without wasting points that can be used on valuable posts. Meta-moderation would hopefully take care of abuses.

The solution is probably to get a directory for your directory services. I know I wouldn't be able to find a damned thing these days if it wasn't for some portal site or another with a search engine. As much as I hate "portals" they do come in handy from time to time. Obviously some of the essential sites still get bookmarked, but when looking for something it is much easier to go to Yahoo and type in a generic search subject than hope that I'm going to hit the proper web page by guessing the name.

Take abit.com for example. You'd think it would be the motherboard manufacturer of the same name, but it is just some company selling motherboards that has happened to register a bunch of domains using the names of motherboard manufacturers. Slick marketing I suppose but not very useful for the consumer.

As more and more companies start opening up a face on the web it's just going to get more crowded and confusing to the end user. How can it be resolved? Who knows anymore... like you said, more TLDs will just introduce more domain speculators, more confusion, etc.
