Looks like many of the people who voted were teenagers (Titanic, Harry Potter, Backstreet Boys, et. al.). It Makes "best of the millenium" sound pretty funny.
Hmmm...after clicking "fuck no" to Quicktime's insipid "upgrade to QT 4 Pro?" popup no less than FOUR times while the trailer was loading, it tells me there was an error and it couldn't download the entire movie. Guess I'll have to upgrade after all.:)
The first time I tried to install SuSE, a couple of years ago, I remember that most of the documentation was in German and the English docs were pretty crappy. Is that still the case?
As for asking "self-proclaimed linux gods" questions, you'd be better off asking someone who doesn't pretend to know everything. Some of the self-proclaimed linux gods I know of would be more than happy to make something up on the spot to look smart. On the other hand, I find that the people who admit that they don't know everything will at least try to help you find an answer, if only to find out for themselves.
That reminds me...I just read Timeline by Michael Crichton, and he has a scene in there where a grad student hooks up a scanner to a laptop and has to reboot "so the computer would recognize the hardware." While I was reading that, I was thinking, "Huh? Oh, must be Windows.":)
Do any of you Windows programmers out there know why Win2k *still* requires reboots for nearly everything? Is it something fundamental in the Windows design, or is MS too arrogant to take some pointers from other OSes?
Clinton's saying lots of shit that makes sense. That's because he knows no one will expect him to get it done in the next few days until he's out of the White House. Got to protect the "legacy" there...
You simply misinterpreted other text in the ruling.
I've seen that to be the case with every one of these "sovereign citizenship" loons. They quote parts of rulings that look like supporting evidence for their paranoia, and then they trumpet it OVER and OVER and OVER again, just like limboboy here is doing in these comments. I know there's a way to filter out article authors, but is there a way to killfile individual posters?
Don't blame IIS because of clueless admins. I don't recall windows2000test.com ever being hacked.
I agree with you on the IIS/clueless admins thing, but if I recall correctly windows2000test.com was too busy being continually rebooted and "down due to weather" to be hacked.
This is the straw that broke the camel's back. Fuck the "entertainment" industry--from now on, I'm going to do everything I can to help circumvent this kind of shit, and to distribute circumvention tools.
I installed slack on my work laptop a couple of weeks ago, only to find that X didn't support the S3 Savage chip except as a generic framebuffer (slow and low resolutions only). Someone asked me what I was going to do and I replied, "I'll wait a week for someone to write a server." Well, it was two weeks, but here we are.
I'm all for keeping kids from surfing for porn at school, but censorware isn't the way to do it. Now, if ICANN had been smart and voted in the.adult (or.xxx, I don't remember which was proposed) TLD and all porn sites were forced to relocate there, there wouldn't be a problem. Now kids will be unable to do research on AIDS and other STDs, be unable to learn about gay/lesbian/bi culture (even though it's a requirement--"cultural diversity"--in college), and be unable to get news from sites that run negative articles about censorware (*coughTIMEcough*).
Any minors who want to get around censorware, contact me or look at peacefire's site (link above in story). I'll be more than happy to stick it to McCain.
Another way around this stupidity is to set up thousands of random proxy servers that will allow content through. This may have already been mentioned here, but I'm lazy and didn't bother to read the other comments first.:P
Gap commercials have fun exciting people doing fun and exciting things.
OK, I was taking you seriously until I came to this part. The Gap hires homeless heroin addicts to run around singing tunelessly (and Old Navy has been trying the same thing). I do boycott companies with stupid advertising.
but we'd also probably lose sites like stileproject and x-entertainment, who are run by dudes with nothing better to do, but need ad money to keep them going.
Oh darn, we might lose Jay Stile.
Then you'd only have people like me, who run sites because they want to get information to people, and don't bitch and whine about "revenue." What a dual tragedy if I ever saw one...
Keep posting exploits and known holes, and link to the M$ site for patches and new info. Bugtraq doesn't have to cut-n-paste the advisories; they can just summarize.
As other posters have said, that doesn't really fit the crime...
He should be drawn and quartered instead. I'd pay to see that. I just bitched out Circuit City for spamming (we went to buy a printer once and the salesman was talking to a supervisor. Both of them looked over and saw my wife and I standing there obviously waiting for help, then walked off together. We went across the street to Best Buy. If CC didn't need my money then, they sure as fuck don't need it now), and also EBay ("eBay sent this e-mail to you because your Notification Preferences indicate that you want to receive information about Special Promotions, Offers and Events"...er, no, it was still set to "no" when I double-checked. Fuck you, EBay).
OK, the drawn and quartered thing was tongue-in-cheek. What the judge should have done was to make this piece of shit pay restitution to every single person he spammed and every single person on the system he stole resources from. Even at, say, 10 cents per person, this ass would be in debt for a very long time.
I have connectix virtual playstation which makes my 1500$ computer I run like a 100$ playstation.
Hell, I play PSX games through VGS on "my" (work) $4,400 laptop.:P
The graphics are a little grainy (VGS doesn't do anti-aliasing or other gfx tricks like Bleem!, but then it also actually plays the games smoothly as opposed to Bleem!'s choppy play), but the gameplay and sound are both perfect on a P3-700.

Screenshots fall under "fair use," which supercedes anything you might agree to (unless they want to try to claim trade secrets, but then they wouldn't be releasing the software to the public in the first place). I say fuck 'em. Give me the name of a program that has this stipulation and I'll be happy to post a review along with screenshots.

are no longer listed. So at least they take action quickly... is this such a bad thing?
Only when there's a huge amount of public outrage. I emailed them regarding a friend's computer security site (he's a respected figure in legitimate security circles), which is *still* being blocked as "criminal activity". They didn't look into the site (obviously, since it has nothing to do with criminal activity whatsoever, unless you think Bugtraq is for crooks), nor did I get so much as a "fuck off" from them.
