Too true. I tried to check my blackmetal.com order status from work, only to run up against this bullshit (Blackmetal.com: extreme: occult). It's not occult, it's fucking music, and I'm pretty sure Billy Graham's "Are You Ready to Meet God?" cult isn't being blocked.

And you believe that?

Our two biggest competitors aren't unionized. They start their entry-level employees at $18 an hour with great health benefits, compared to our $11/hour (but with great health benefits). Even with the union here, many people are on forced OT, with sometimes as much as 21 days going by before a day off. And we have one of the largest, most powerful unions in America "representing" us.

I'll say it again: Unions are fucking useless. They force people with skills into a lower pay scale to match up with the people who don't have a clue. Yep, those of us who DO have a clue are jumping ship.

This was before the explosion of the web, so looking up tutorials myself wasn't an option, although if I had been a bit less lazy, I suppose I could have checked usenet or spent some time in the library. Somewhat OT, but...

you can't believe that such power can be handed over to entities that have proven themselves so rapacious in the past (RIAA, MPAA) with no consequences for the average *non*-criminal.

I posted DeCSS on my site way back when all of this was beginning, only to voluntarily remove it a week later; I figured that my sysadmin was catching enough grief over my page from angry cops and didn't need the added pressure of MPAA lawyers. Last night (what is it, a year later?) I got email from mpaa23@pacbell.net threatening legal action, etc. etc., which was CCd to my ISP's lawyer. Apparently a good way to waste their time and hopefully cost them some money is to poison lists of DeCSS sites.

Also, due to the MPAA's stupidity, I'm going to put up a link to a google search on decss.zip. They'll have to drag me to court to prevent it (links to the program have been prevented by the court, but they're going to have to get another ruling altogether on linking to a program search). Isn't this fun?

On the plus side of their email is the fact that they list all MPAA member organizations to remind me which companies to avoid. How thoughtful.

Sure, there are plenty of examples of older science fiction films and books that got the science wrong, but they were working with what they had at the time. There's just no fucking excuse for movies like M2M and Red Planet to get even the most basic science wrong.

I'm shocked that this movie got the ATGC DNA bases wrong. I've never studied or even read much about biology or genetics, but even I know what the bases are called.

For those of you who think scientific accuracy is "picky": would it have been much of a different movie if the makers had done a bit of basic research? Or if they had asked a high school science class, for that matter?
