It depends on your definition of DBA. In the large companies I've worked at, the DBA administers the database but the application developers develop the tables within them. DBA = backup, tablespaces, etc. App Dev = db contents. I'm a database developer and would never claim to be a DBA (although SQL Server is easy enough that I could get by in a pinch).
I've been using SQL Server since 4.3 on OS/2 1.1 (94) and I can say that it was not enabled by default then. You had to specifically grant it to the user if you wanted to use it.
And as always, if you don't do string building and have properly bound variables, it's REALLY hard to get hit by a SQL Injection attack.
I'd rather have better video support than USB support so that you play games in a virtual machine (and by games, I mean games beyond 2D games from the early 90's). If a virtual machine would support something like DirectX or OpenGL so that I could have the kids running their games in a virtual machine (and being able to install them, etc.) I would have them set up with a locked down OS with a virtual system for their games.
There are some options, but they haven't been successful for me yet. But I'm sure the technology is getting closer.
with Andriod, you already *can* develop your own apps.....there was a whole competition sponsored by Google for it. For that matter, you can develop your own apps for Windows Mobile, too....and Blackberry....and Symbian...and even the *gasp* iPhone.....
But what if buying that $1000 "do nothing" was the same as buying that Dum-Dum sucker from the homeless person at the street corner for $1 or whatever price they are selling it at......it feeds someone for some period of time. Sure the money isn't as well used as a charity, but it doesn't automatically mean that the person is spending the money on other frivolous junk.
While Apple has an "ask me first option", they should have the option to set specific spending limits. For example, my DVR is set so that the spending limit for the kids is $0.00 without a code. My monthly spending limit is a little higher. Once that spending limit is reached, even I have to enter a code. Best case would a monthly limit and a single purchase limit (example: no more than $5 per purchase and no more than $50 per month without entering a code). And since the App store can install stuff, there could easily be a "trial" period.
The big difference is that the case mod is something that you do with your own two hands (generally - you can buy a case mod, too). Designer clothes are still mass produced....just more expensive. If you had used an original painting, it would be much closer.
He's already an artist who dabbled in programming. What he needs to do is write it for one of the platforms that will do most of the work of distributing for you and take a cut. You get the rest. XBox360 would be a good one if it's console-friendly. Or the iPhone might be the way to go. With either of those, they provide you the service of getting the app to everyone and then send you (some) of the money people pay for it. That model will make it much easier for an individual or small group compete with the large publishers.
To do it the "long" way, you have to have a working demo and get in front of the right people......but they probably get so many idea submissions that they'll have to be overwhelmed to give it much more than 20 minutes of their time.
Noone says that you have to use the green screen for all of this work. FTP text files back and forth. Decent editors (even with color coding if you want). Any of a large collection of version control systems. Plus, your files are now backed up somewhere besides the mainframe. All of those problems are solved with relatively simple process.
I'm not versed in COBOL, but I assume it has some sort of loop (maybe not a FOR loop, but a WHILE / DO UNTIL etc.) If not, so what. I could have used the concept of arrays just as well. My point was that if you understand the fundamental building blocks of a language, reading code in a different programming language usually isn't that difficult as long as you have a reference for the syntax.
It's at this point that someone will bring out fringe languages such as LISP or PROLOG or those languages who's sole purpose is to be confusing (such as that all whitespace language). But a commonly used language tends to look close enough to other commonly used languages that the big hiccup is syntax (why does code have to start in this column?) and libraries (Where is the function that does X?). The fundamental programming constructs, however, are all the same.
It's actually no different than trying to decipher some code writen in a language you are already an expert in. I'm fluent in both PL/SQL and T-SQL and sometimes I look at a procedure and just have to rewrite it from scratch because the original author wrote horrid code. Sometimes I look at it and can trace through it to figure out what it does, crappy or not. Sometimes it's beautiful and pristine and easy to understand. In the end, I have to make a change to it and I figure out how to change it without breaking anything. Then I move on to something else.
If it were COBOL, I might have a slight hurdle learning the syntax, but already knowing how to code and knowing several languages (BASIC, FORTRAN, C, C++, C#, Java, PL/SQL, T-SQL, etc.) means that a loop is a loop whether it's a FOR i=1 to 15 type loop or a for(int i=1; i [lt] 15; i++) type loop. Syntax can be deciphered with a reference manual. Programming and understanding code is a skill.
Other nerd interests not represented by this article (and a good list for a true decathalon):

You could pick random events from each category every year.....no two decatalons would be the same.
It's pretty obvious that the data is not stored in a relational table and they need someone to interpret the datafile format in order to write an "update" statement that saves off a copy of the current pay and then restores it later. I'm not sure why it would take 9 months to then undo that work......if they don't have a COBOL programmer, how can they get valid estimates? I know that anyone who tries to estimate my database work screws it up.
If the proposed shots were to be included instead of the existing shots, my screen would still look more like the existing shots because I'd have to crank up the gamma. One of the first things I do in a game is adjust the gamma so that I can see everything. I never played Doom III (more into RPG than FPS), but I would have hated that game because you can't see (I've played I and II). In an RPG, darkness and fog of war and what not are much less important to the game since they are about the story and player advancement. In Doom III, where character level isn't much of an issue, the darkness adds to the gameplay.
And here I assumed it was from Bob and Carole and Ted and Alice......Bob was married to Carole. Ted was married to Alice. But part of the plot was for Bob and Alice to get together......
I use diagrams as a tuning tool, but only to look for paths that don't make sense or alternate paths through tables or for "dead-ends"......but these are things that a computer can't really tell you because they require an understanding of the data.
But you're right, the explain plan is the single most useful tool for tuning a query. If you understand how the engine is going to execute the query you know what areas you can affect. And tuning is manipulaing those effects in a way that makes the query faster.
Actually, if you're healthy, you'll lose the erection after USING the erection.....then you wait a little while before you get another one. Even if you are young and in your prime, you have some "intermissions" between erections. It's the perfect time to provide some alternative stimilation or even to just cuddle.......
The article I read the other day said that it didn't really help those with degenerative muscle diseases. I didn't click this link because I assume there won't be too much new or interesting that I wouldn't get from the comments here.
Actaully, if there is such an abundance of the stuff we use for power why would it be that impossible?
Launch rocket from Earth with transport probe. Transport probe houses parts for a return rocket and parts for a "shipping container". Once it arrives, it fuels the return rocket and loads the shipping container. Launch rocket from destination towards Earth. As it nears Earth, launch a receiving rocket which aids in safe descent of the shipping container.
As long as the shipping container is collapsible (something akin to a balloon, but sturdy enough to withstand launch and space) it shouldn't be too bad. Oh, and the contianer has to at least bring back enough to pay for the trip, so I'm not sure how big that container needs to be.

Not quite running Linux, but with one central Linux servers and a bunch of C64 terminals, you're almost there......
