  1. Re:Should be modded as "off topic" on Is Piracy the Pathway to Apple Profit? · · Score: 1

    The "Network Effect" topic is very much related to piracy. I happen to agree that network effect has happened in certain circumstances, but not that it is always a gain to the company getting the "free advertizing".

    There are already several threads advocating network effect, and its benefits. Just because the GP post wasn't a reply to one of them does not make it off-topic.

    Thank you.

    I only have a couple servers, so it's not a big deal to pull in a fix from unstable when I need it. Yes, the security fixes for testing is an issue -- I usually pull the package from unstable in that case also.

    My apt setup prefers testing, so the nice thing is that once the packages are in sync in unstable and testing apt will only pull from testing.

    You should compare Debian's unstable with Fedora's rawhide.

    If you had used Debian testing, you would have had far fewer problems, I can assure you of that.

    I have been running my production servers on testing for the last 5 years. There were only minor problems -- and a couple larger problems with libnss-ldap and samba 3.x before 3.0.2 or so.

    Just make a new name starting with a "g". How about "grylic"? j/k But pick something that is some word related to the arts.

    It all comes down to the definition of sizes of organizations.

    What some people call "small" others call "big" -- let me explain.

    Let's try looking at this scale:

    * Small Business
    * Medium Business
    * Large Business
    * Small Enterprise
    * Medium Enterprise
    * Large Enterprise

    An example of small business would be your local liquor store down the street.

    There is a wide, fuzzy line between large business and small enterprise, but many would agree that you get into enterprise type situations when you have a WAN (which implies multiple locations).

    "Small" in kjh1's post is "big enough to have custom software and more than one programmer". That would rate at least as "medium business" on the above scale.

    Right now, open source is moving through the scale from the middle out. So it is moving into the very large (think carrier grade Linux) and just getting started in the small.

    Most likely it is 5Ghz from the base station to the handset and 2.4Ghz from the handset to the base station.

    The base station has to use more power to get the signal to go through walls at 5Ghz and they use 2.4Ghz from the handset to extend the battery life.

    Not to mention the concerns about radiation from the handsets going into the brain... So the less power coming from the handset the better.
