  1. Re:Why Open Source Needs Microsoft on Evolution Reaches A New Milestone · · Score: 1

...open-source doesn't have the resources to research and develop effective UI

While Evolution may be a good example for your trolling generalization, it's just not true about all open source projects. One could just as easily claim that open source doesn't have the resources to research and develop fast, flexible, complete, or efficient software systems. There are talented open source programmers who pay attention to those things, just as there are talented open source programmers who work on UI.

And just because some projects choose to clone commercial software's UI doesn't mean that it's because of a lack of resources. Many commercial software companies choose to reuse existing UI concepts. Where did Microsoft get the UI model for Windoes? Where did Apple get it?

    6 eToys.com
    7 Buy.com
    8 CDnow.com
    9 Mypoints.com

And Netcraft (http://www.netcraft.com/whats/) provides the following info for each of these sites:

bluemountainarts.com is running Apache/1.3.9 (Unix) on FreeBSD
amazon.com is running Stronghold/2.4.2 Apache/1.3.6 C2NetEU/2412 (Unix) on DIGITAL UNIX

mypoints.com is running Netscape-Enterprise/3.5.1G on Solaris
    toysrus.com is running Microsoft-IIS/4.0 on NT4 or Windows 98

Which to me, only looks like 3 of the top 10 shopping sites use Windows. Where did PC data get their stats?

  11. Obscurity on "Please Die": Freedom From Speech · · Score: 1

I think obscurity is one of the key things of online communication that gives way to flaming. A lot of the things said in flamewars would never be said to somebody's face. It's easier to shoot somebody down if one doesn't have to think of the other as a real person. It's easier to tell someone to die, if you can't see the look of hurt on their face, or the look of anger that tells you they're going to kick your ass.

This holds true offline too, in a way--people talking behind the backs of others, people seeing each other as a category, not a person (as just a race, a gender, a sexual preference, etc.). But for some reason it's easir online because there really aren't going to be any major reprecussions. One can flame another and walk away. The online life is still very detached from offline life for most.

But this obscurity also helps people deal with the receipt of flame posts. If somebody you know--somebody with a face--comes to you with an attack, it's something you have to deal with. If you work in the same office, or study at the same school, or whatever, then that conflict is something you're going to have to deal with. But online, one can just step away from the computer or scroll down.

  12. Re:"Internet Century" on Why Time Warner was Forced Into AOL's Arms · · Score: 1

If we're still focusing on the internet in 100 years, then we'll be in sorry shape indeed. The electric light bulb was popularized around the turn of this last century (was the the 1901 Paris World's Fair that was covered in lights?) but you didn't hear anybody in 1980 rhapsodizing about the wonders brought to us by the "man-made suns".

I don't think this analogy holds true at all. The light bulb is a relatively simple, even though wonderful, piece of technology comapared to the Internet. Maybe it would be more applicable to compare it to the automobile, which even though it originated over a hundred years ago, is still seeing a lot of attention, and a great deal of improvement.

But the Internet is more than just technology--it's a medium. Because of this I think that it'll be a long time before we see it die, or swept under the carpet. The Internet has the potential to carry a lot of power and impact our world greatly, just as the printing press has done, just as radio has done, just as television has done, and even as much as the light bulb.

  15. Geeks and Bruce Campbell on Sam Raimi to Direct Spiderman Film · · Score: 1

I think Spiderman does qualify as geek fare. Comics are a central part of some of our interests. It doesn't all have to be about computers. I've always been a fan of Bruce Campbell, even though he has been involved in some cheezy stuff. Peter Parker did always seem a bit skinnier and pastier than Bruce Campbell, but then notice how Peter Parker beefs up once he puts on that Spiderman suit. I guess the Bruce Campbell involvement make come from his involvement in Evil Dead as well.
