that's a really cool concept. i wonder if they will ever get it down to a size where it could be portable, eg in a standard-size pair of glasses.

'course, it would be even cooler if it could be done with contacts... but that's pretty unlikely.

it's interesting how it can correct for defocusing (near/far sightedness) with a single deformable mirror... i wonder how they manage that.

Why are they coming out with a new, "luggable" version of the venerable PS1, when the marketing blitz is going to be on for the PS2?

it's a tradition for electronics companies to release "updated" versions of their old consoles when a new platform is released. they are trying to squeeze every last dollar from their investments in the technology.

nintendo released an updated nes when the snes was released, and an updated snes when the n64 came out. sega made a portable genesis when the saturn came out.

it's also a hook of theirs; they hope that if someone get hooked on the cheaper old platform, they will spend the cash to get the current model afterwards.

it is interesting that it will be out before the ps2 though. :)

i love how this always happens; "x is _way_ too big to download with y speed, therefore nobody will ever pirate it! duh!" - then new technology pops up, and every 14-year-old kid and his brother are sucking gigs and gigs of copyrighted material off usenet/napster/gnutella/freenet/whatever.

people said this about audio cd pirating. now we have mp3. people said this about data cds. now we have dsl and cablemodems capable of tossing a few gigs around with ease. people said this about dvd movies. hey, have you checked usenet out recently? go look at alt.binaries.vcd and count the number of movies ripped from dvd.

and think about it; 2 gigs (compressed from a 4gb game) isn't all that hard to download with dsl or cable. no more difficult than people who download 4 cds worth of final fantasy psx games.

and honestly, the availability of dsl/cable is much more widespread than many people think. i live in tacoma, a mid-sized city, and the first thing i did when i moved was transferred my phone service and order dsl. same goes for many of my geek friends.

so give it a break and get a clue.

my point was that napster is a liberator. the founding fathers of the usa were liberators. they were both seen as criminals by the powers of the day, though all they wanted to do was give people more freedom. it's just that that freedom conflicts with the beliefs of the powers that be.

of course, napster is also in it for the money. so it's not a perfect example, but i'm sure you understand.

there were a few good points in there. but i still feel that metallica is wrong to sue napster. napster isn't pirating metallica's music. and i don't think it's right that metallica is laying responsibility for the actions of their own fans at napster's feet.

napster gives music fans a freedom they didn't have before. it's not their fault if that freedom gets abused. think of the second amendment; do we curse the writers of the constitution and the government whenever a person is killed with a gun? no. we punish the _individual_ who commited a _crime_. not the person/people/company who gave that person the freedom/ability to commit the crime. i don't see how this is any different with music. if you pirate music, the legal consequences are _your_ responsibility.

even though i can feel for the band's position - the bit about the book club, though muddled, did have merit - i'm still glad to see 30,000+ people who got kicked off napster fight back.
