IT DOESN'T MATTER what their "intentions" are.. This case clearly shows how silly software patent-laws are. With guns and sanctions they dictate who can use what technology, because someone were "first". Come on! Most of us stopped such silliness in the kindergarden.
What makes this a rather ironical and humorous case though, is the target - behemot Microsoft. It'll probably be overruled in the next run, but nobody is safe with such laws. Who's going to risk developing stuff when you're sued left and right before you even know somebody filed a patent for it while you RDed? This can potentially kill off alot of inventing. Without somebody with lots of money backing you up, it's a risky business.. Which is what the big corporations want anyways, so maybe Microsoft will settle this one in the end..
I think he means that he wants a history-buffer, just like the commandline in VI-mode. Very useful to trace back to what you typed in earlier. Readline also makes editing the line a snap, although by typing 'ed' in sqlplus, you can edit it in your favourite editor. Almost the same.
I don't understand your post though. Using sqlplus is what you're stuck with if you're going to write batchjobs. Sqlloader and rman are nice, although a bit limited when you're doing more complex stuff.
You can't use toad when you're on a production system that you have to go through some hoops to reach.
You're right that sqlplus is not what he uses it for. Sqlplus is like a scripting-engine, evaluating scripts on the fly. However, Oracle is responsible for proclaiming it should be used for interactive querying. Then, they should also make it more user-friendly when in interactive mode.
It's still running. I didn't download their client since I have both TightVNC and ordinary VNC from before. And it worked!! I just had to reconnect after one failed attempt.
These guys know what they're doing. Impressive indeed!! I got to change Window, and delete some text, then go to the addressbar and delete some more and trying to write in an address. But there were 7 other people connected too, doing other things. If I were alone, I bet I could've used the machine just fine.
Come to think of it, I still got my old dusty C64.. Maybe it's time to revive it;-)
" In order to increase market share, these are the people who need to be sold on open-source. Currently there are not very many college students in CS or CompE that use open-source development products. In order to stay competitive, open-source must go out of its way to recruit these youngsters and give them the opportunity to try out open-source. This should happen at both the college and high school level.
This can be a real advantage to open-source as there are so many projects that these students can contribute on. It's a win-win situation. They get real-world hands on experience and open-source gets more coders and people dedicated to open-source philosophies. "
Spoken like a true marketer. The buzzwords alone will stamp down all competition from Microsoft and get them running back to Mom. Nice;-)
Damn, where do you get the touch effects? I must need an upgrade...;-)
Comes with the girlfriend upgrade I got patched half a year ago;-) But, seriously. Take a few hours walk in nature and touch all the trees you want! There are lots of interesting things to touch!:-)
Overall, though, I agree with what you're saying, and (to be at least vaguely on topic) I think that the number of people who play online games demonstrates at least to an extent that there are plenty of people not satisfied with the world the way it is--and I think that's why players complain so much when things go wrong in online games; they want the game world to be "better" than the real one in some aspect or another.
Excellent point! Living in fantasy will not bring total fulfillment though, because of inherent limitations. It will always remain an escape from the bigger reality. Inside, there's a little mind fleeing the REAL challenges in its life.
I'm just not optimistic that we (the general we) can make much improvement in the real world.
Are you crazy? There's lots of things to do. In fact, there's so much to do, there's plenty for everyone..:-) You don't have to save the world, but there's lots of volunteer work you can do, or start some interesting projects. Taking part in the real world, is really much more exciting than playing videogames. You don't do it to save the world, and when finding out it's "impossible" then quit, that's just ego.
Maybe I've just spent too long in the bundle of insanity that is the IT industry.
I like to be part of both worlds. I got tired of just dealing with inhuman computers ALL the time. It's good to be away from them and do something completely different.
In Germany, people sue travel agents if they think their holiday was less enjoyable than it could be (bad hotel, dirty beach, or sometimes even a late tour bus!), and what's scary: they often win...
People take less responsibility for their own lives now than before. Many unconsciously think that if they can just sue, complain and harass everybody else, everything will be neat and tidy the next time. If just everybody _else_ changes, then it'll "work itself out" somehow. The people around them is to be responsible for their comfort and enjoyment. No "bad" events are permitted, and everything must be inhumanly perfect.
Sometimes, it's best to just suck it in, admit that you made a mistake and learn from it. Everything can't be perfect all the time, and often when it isn't, you can enjoy it even more.
I'm not saying we should abstain from enjoying life, wether we play with things, people or fantasy. In fact, we should really celebrate life. It's great: Superb resolution, realistic sound effects plus some exotic touch-effects! I almost believe I'm really here!!!;-)
I'm also not saying we should abstain from worry, anxiety, sadness, anger or any emotion. If they come up, just let them. We probably need the release, and blocking it can do more harm.
However, we can be natural and cherish knowledge more. In society there is so much feverishness. People must have this, are envyious of him and long to be with her. It creates alot of suffering, ignorance and superficial relationships.
Yes, I do recognize that losing something or someone you worked hard for, can make you feel miserable. I've been there. However, we also need to recognize that the more hard we think it is, the harder it gets. Again, if it needs to be cried out, fine, no need to play the tough guy. Studying knowledge can alleviate much of the pain and make one learn more from experiences also, so it doesn't have to be repeated again and again.
I agree, people are that way and I accept them all, even people who are labelled "villains". I'm addressing people who are tired of superficial things and seek more meaning in life.
In the objective sense, everything happens as-it-is. If something disappears or gets created, it's just an event happening in a world, in this instance the artificial cyberworld of Everquest. In fact, if Verant wishes to, they can easily implement a system of degrading items or having NPC thieves pickpocket you. It's their game, their chose. They even claim no warranty for preserving anything you "gain" in the game in their license you agree to every login. They also have a history of banning people who auction out virtual stuff. It's not real. You pay for the experience of these events, wether you judge them good or bad, not any objects in their world.
It's your choice to play the game, and also how you're gonna handle a setback. Obviously, you have a goal of earning as much level, eq, money, power, respect, whatever, as you can. This goal is also subjective, and varies a from player to player. I won't go into details here about that, that could last for days..
One lesson, as in real life, is that things come and go. There's no real value to material stuff, because in the end THEY WILL ALL GO, including our own body. When you realize this, you can see everything as events with hidden lessons in them and let go of it. This doesn't mean you should never complain to get your character fixed or do anything dogmatic. Nobody can tell you what you MUST do, and rob you of your choice!
It means that in the end, you know you're perfectly safe because you're going to lose Everything anyways.
How do you know that you can't keep it if you got it for $0? Have you tried?
It's an interesting concept. However ANAL, but it sounds to me that the free-as-in-beer "gift" of the extra item is provided IF you buy the product. Thus if you return it, you should of course return the item too, because then the purchase is voided. The item is bound to the purchase, and only "free-as-in-beer-IF-so-and-so".
Even if Microsoft GIVES is away, the software still has the same value. That's how Microsoft can deduct on taxes so-called "donations" to schools (that contain strict clauses where the school MUST use Microsoft-products or be in breach of contract).
In this case, the contract is secret OEM-deals, thus the judge can only use the retail price as a fair price. If Microsoft had actually shown up and proved the real price, then the judge might have ruled accordingly.
It's not free. OEM deals have strict clauses where you can't even deliver competing OSes and other such claims. Even if Microsoft PAYS OEMs to deliver XP, it's not free because free is more than just monetary..
that I take no responsibility for the American government
That's the problem. You leave it up to crooks to run your country. That's collectively neglecting responsibility, ultimately over your own lives. You become a victim of your own apathy, collectively. The forefathers of your country was afraid of such, because it undermindes the whole democratic process. Remember, democracy only works when the collective wants to take part in it. It doesn't run itself, however lazy you have become.
A single person can do much. Voting is just a miniscule part of politics.
I'm in CA, which chose Gore pretty overwhelmingly. Say I'd voted for Gore. The only result would be that the popular vote was slightly more in favor of Gore than it already was. But the outcome would've been the same. Now, had I lived in FL, or any other place where the race was close, it might've made a difference. Most states aren't close, though.
How many thousands think as you do? You CAN make a difference, but there are no guarantees in life. So what if you didn't get to dictate the outcome with your vote, that is how a democraty works: The majority get to decide.
Besides, politics is much more than just voting. There are many ways to become heard and educate others. But when the citizens become sheep and just accept the way things are run, it's then a country gets horrible leaders and grow serious problems! Apathy never solved anything.
Just because your vote is just one in millions, a drop in the ocean, you fail to recognize this: Without the drops, there can be no ocean!
And the flavour of all the drops, is what makes the ocean. Now, the politicians ARE representing you. This is what leaders you get when you're cynical, care-free, repress your feelings and do nothing. Do you want it to get better or worse, it's your choice. At least, you COULD have said that you've done the best you could, but now you can't say that!
Everything is as it is. The old system certainly had its strengths and its weaknesses, just as the new system has its own NOW.
But look at the NOW. The caste system is no more. It is just a shadow left in the minds of people. New generations will sooner or later, be able to drop the past completely. You can too, NOW! If you so choose.
Don't see your fellow human being as a caste, or put them in ANY comfortable bin like religion, gender, nationality or even soccer team! They are like you, a human being, a spiritual being. Someone you cannot limit. That being behind the mask, is much, much more than you can ever contemplate, just as you also are such a being.
You see other Indians as caste, NOW is the time to drop that notion UTTERLY and spread the word. The more you talk about caste, you cloud the vision of the human being behind the words you utter. That human being which resides in reality and not in your mind.
Pride and prestige is about the ego, which is the direct opposite to true spirituality. Nobody deserves to be an "untouchable".
You are correct in this though: We never know what's REALLY right, but there's only one way to find out!
I think you two are talking about two different types of improvement though. You are talking about happiness, while he's talking about material comfort. You're both correct.
About society working slightly less.. Also remember how many women are now working, that were working in the home before. The amount of people subject to work-related stress is nearly double that of 50 years ago.. Plus, the kids got it worse. Now they're so starved of attention from their parents, they are totally alienated and subject to a massive pop-culture overload from their peers and commercialism. Then you have urbanism, the list goes on and on...
Me and some friends are actually thinking about moving out of the city and establishing a self-sustaining colony away from the madness..
once again, lame technologies seek to imitate what the One True Editor has been able to do for years.

Yoga, meditation and breathing techniques are just techniques. They work on all if motivated and you have the right teachers that can teach beyond the concepts and into true spirituality.
However, one shoe does not fit all. God obviously loves diversity, and if we attempt to make copies of ourselves, then we have an important lesson to learn!
Stressful is knowing that if you dont work 18 hours a day for the next month, you will die of starvation because your crop isnt harvested. I hate to break it to you, but today's employment is far less stressful than in ages past.
Having started doing yoga, breathing exercises and meditation about 2 1/2 years ago, I can't really recommend this enough. However, I do recommend ART OF LIVING and not just any program, because it is so much more than just a yoga-gym. If it becomes like a sport and only for self-gratification, then something is lacking IMHO. People will go tired of that after a while, and seek more genuine experiences elsewhere.
Many practitioners of yoga, never meditate, and vica-versa. Many who meditate, don't even know the importance of breath and breathing. And there's a whole world more: If you don't get the knowledge behind yoga, which originally comes from large volumes of scriptures from the Vedic tradition in India, you're really missing out of the whole thing. In Art of Living, the concepts are presented in very easy format, so that everybody can understand. After all, living is the simplest act we do.
In Art of Living, you learn that living is an art. As with every human activity, it only becomes art when you put conscious focus and effort on it. But we are rarely conscious about how we live, aren't we?
That's why you learn techniques, to cleanse body and mind, in order to better function as a human being. Instead of reacting to events, you can start acting what you really want to put forth in this world. Thus, yoga and meditation is not a goal in itself, but a tool to enhance life.
If this sounds interesting, you might be interested in taking contact with the nearest center at your location. Taking a course in Art of Living is a chance of a lifetime. No other course has provided such deep profound insight and genuine transformation in my honest experience!
It sounds like you have some real anti-social tendencies more than anything else. Team sports teach about working together which is a very important quality to have which will serve you well in life. I'd hate to have to be a co-worker of anyone who hates being part of a team.
I can understand him. I think it's more about the concept of the other team he's talking about. Teamgames are usually just to win over the other team. Then the winners feel "good" and the losers feel "bad". Ie, it's a bet where you invest your happiness and energy, and the winners take-all. Often there is little cooperation involved: You do what you do, just to score AGAINST the Other Team.
If you want to call that antisocial, then count me out of socialism (although I like sports).

It's not amazing at all really, it's Astounding.
