What company in their right mind would use and publicly accessable network for their internal correspondance. If I was a shareholder I'd be against this.
If Gracenote wins this lawsuit send them a bill for your time in adding information to and supporting the CDDB. Afterall we helped build their intellectual property shouldn't we see some compensation?
Class action status would be nice.
I am a security guru not a developer. Know your competition and know your customer...what your describing is really a *gasp* sales issue.
When biding a on certain project you can usually figure out who your competitors will be by either the scope/type of project and the skills required or by scanning the lobby sign in sheet that most medium to large companies have looking for competitors names.
Also, most of us at one time or another has been brought into a project to fix someone elses mistakes or have heard about the mistakes of our competitors...use this knowledge in the pre-bid discovery process to hammer the relevant points to the customer as it could relate to their environment. There is no need to mention the names of the competitors just say something like "I've had other customers where the consultant did (yada yada yada) and it created these security issues (remember always issues never problems)" and be sure it relates directly to their environment.
Remember the more information you know about the clients environment before the first meeting; the more you can tailor your presentation to their specific needs.
You should be in the business of building lasting relationships with clients...not just knocking out code to handle todays problem. Do this grasshopper and the bid process will just be a formality and not something to worry about.
Most battles are won before the armies take the field...
Since, RIAA seems to be going after the medium of transmission instead of the messenger does this mean they could sure the US Postal Service because I am sure there are millions of people sending CDs which may or may not contain licensed copyright information.
In this case CSS could be said to be acting as an agent of law enforcement which means the same rules would apply. The police can not use a 3rd party to do something which the cannot do themselves.
Let's say starting tomorrow all books will be available in electronic format only. Lets also say that one hundred years from now cataclysim strikes and we are all back to the stone age. I can still read but with no electricity to power my nifty PocketKnowledge PDA I am scewed.
How could the human race be expected to rebuild civilisation without access to the knowledge of previous generations. Remember folks it's happend before....the dark ages, the burning of the library at Alexandria....
Write a browser plugin that scans any website you go to and provides the results in a little status icon in the staus bar of the browser. Thats what I did.
If you take the people who are just trying to get free TV out of the picture this is a perfect example of the hacker ethic. Two groups trying to improve their technology and increase their knowledge and in the end you have a product that was clearly superior technologicaly than it's previous version.
RIAA, MPAA, and all the other content "owners" out there could learn a lot from this.
Yes, I think it's disgusting. How can they do that? Is there a law somewhere that says you can tack anything you want on to another bill? To me it subverts the ideals of a democracy. Seems to me the only way the few overule the majority.
If anyone has any info on how this is legal please post it.
I may be stupid for asking this but, why doesn't someone go into court and do a bit by bit copy of a dvd? Since it seems to be the the megacorps argument that CSS is copy-protection and not monopoly protection wouldn't it prove that all DVDs can be copied without touching CSS at all?
I'm not a lawyer and don't get paid $500 an hour but it seems common sense to me.
Contact the manufacturer and complain. I am a security engineer for a large systems integrator and also found that some antivirus scanners see l0phtcrack as a trojan or some such thing.
I'm sure the people who wrote this software check 2600.com and l0pht.com 500 times a day to stay current with the latest security news...but, I guess they think we can't be trusted with that information.
Make your feelings known to the manufacturer....thats what I did...if that doesn't work....i'll look for new software.
I believe you are correct. Security concerns are likely to be one of the biggest drivers for this especially when you consider China's commitment to infowar as part of their new people's army doctrine.
A side benefit is the creation of a more computer literate society. When I first got into computers it was a C64 -> Amiga -> DOS -> Windows/UNIX. There isn't much you can learn about the details of networking or OS design from setting up a WinNT box but, if I was 10 years old again with a Linux box totally different story.
All in all...if this is true...despite what we may think of China's government it's an excellent move for them.
What company in their right mind would use and publicly accessable network for their internal correspondance. If I was a shareholder I'd be against this.
errr...the MAC in MAC address stands for media access control
But I am willing to pay for insightful knowledge and analysis which does not include suck or slate.

I am unemployed...two years ago I was unemployed....Why? I am a slackass and I read /. all day...would you like fries with that?

It's simple...it's time for a new budget

Consume all the crap they want to sell us or be consumed by them.

And let's not forget about Pixar
Slashdot does not create news...it creates a place to discuss other peoples news.

Only buy devices that are not SDMI compliant and spread the word about the availability of such devices.

They all say that....especially after going public. :)
