Probably, but that does it mean the debate is not on-going. You may have heard the concept deliberated it under its more common name: safety net.

Social Security also normalizes risk across the whole population. A system that relies totally on individuals to save and invest would have a certain percentage of people ending up with no or negative return on their investment and some who overwhelmingly exceed the average (and don't think it's because everyone at the top "deserves" it - there's an element of randomness in markets). SS trims both tails off the curve -- preventing complete devastation on the left side at the expense of the fortunate ones on the right side. For those Masters of the Universe who feel slighted because you think you should be on the right side of the curve, I wouldn't worry about it. Fire up your E*Trade account make up for it with your investing superiority.

Have you tried picking up the phone. You can always send your e-mail (but with the answers) as a paper trail of your conversation.

    It provides two benefits:

    1) Developing relationships. It's amazing how far a few seconds of idle chat can go to put a human side to your interactions with the people you need things from. This is really important with gatekeepers.

    2) Forces you to be concise: If you have 30 seconds to ask for something - you'll be forced to get to the point more quickly.

If you don't get them, don't leave a vm. Just send your e-mail and call them later.

Hopefully the "we" is you and your fellow Iranians (wonder if /. can be read in Iran). We (as in the rest of the world) have countless examples why we should not be in the business of installing our favorite "leaders" at the heads of unstable governments. Supporting means for people to criticize, mobilize, and install a leader that meets their best interests (as determined by them, not outsiders) may take longer, but ultimately results in a more stable society.

There is no doubt that it's better to take the train from DC to NY city than to fly. It's as fast, factoring the dismal security process and where you end up at the end of the trip.

The train is MORE expensive than flying (Accela is ridiculous), takes more time, and has fewer round trips in a given day. The shuttles from DCA to LGA leave every 40-60 minutes; if you get through security quickly, you can almost always go standby on an earlier flight.

I would like the train to be a better option, but it's not there yet. The higher price and slow-tracking regulations that prevent the Accela from going full speed for 90% of the trip hold it back.
