  1. Some of my moments on Games and Fear · · Score: 1
Resident Evil - Was playing this with a friend late at night. First time I entered the mansion I said "screw this, don't want to deal with the zombies" and tried to walk out the front door. That's when the dogs came through the door-opening animation. Definitely was not expecting it.

Thief 1 - One of the last levels inside some house where the interior was all space-disoriented and whatnot. The creatures in that level freaked me out. It's been a while so sorry for the lack of details.

Unreal - All the lights go down and all you (barely) see is this huge creature running towards you. First Skaarj encounter.

Doom 3 - Being able to hear a zombie approach you from behind, coming from only 2 speakers!

Fear - Various parts. When you go down a ladder and see the little girl right in front of you.

  3. IE vs. Firefox on Quiz Microsoft's IE Team Leader · · Score: 3, Interesting

Besides matching some of the features in Firefox (ie. tabbed browsing), what are some others to look forward to in IE7 that an avid Firefox user such as myself would find useful?

  4. Great song list but... on Guitar Hero 2 Official Set List Released · · Score: 0
...I take it that much like the first GH, all these songs will be renditions of the real thing =\

Amplitude and Frequency, both games from Harmonix were able to use the real songs and even break them up by instrument and vocals. I don't see why the GH has to re-record these songs (yeah, I know it probably has something to do with the RIAA). When you know some of these songs all too well you can't help but think the experience just isn't as good as it could be.

Oh, and where oh where is Stairway to Heaven?

  5. Re:So which is it? on Vista RC2: More Refined, But Still Not Perfect · · Score: 1

In my mind, there's really no such thing as a FINAL Windows Build and Service Packs prove this. Sure, SPs will throw in a new version of Windows Media Player, but it's really the bug fixes you're after. That said, it seems Microsoft is providing more of a service than it is a product. Since any version of Windows will have its share of latent bugs, any so-called "release candidate" is nothing more than a beta that is perhaps 70-80% bug-free.

  6. My top 5 on What Are Your Top Five 'Comfort' Games? · · Score: 1
Megaman X Series - Nothing like trying to figure/remember the most efficient way to get through the game with all armor, hearts, etc.

Super Mario World - Colorful, fun game without the restrictive controls of the old SMBs, that and flying is better in this game

Mike Tyson's Punch-out - Knowing all the players' weaknesses, making it up to Bald Bull (2nd time) before giving up, attempting Tyson himself (007 373 5963, I don't remember this password by number, but by how to input it, strangely enough)

Amplitude - I prefer this over Guitar Hero mainly because it uses the actual songs instead of renditions, which, to be honest, were poorly done

Final Fantasy IX - The one FF that's always left out. Everyone's a fanboy for FF7, everyone HATES FF8, and then everyone loves FFX. I love picking up this game on a random save I have. Excellent story, excellent music, graphics of classic RPGs, Square(-Enix)'s way of saying sorry for FF8.

(Runner up) Lumines - I can't pick up this game without spending at least an hour of unstressful entertainment.

Well, the Wii isn't a Microsoft console, so at the very least it won't burn down your house.

The price is right, the new controller style has some potential, and you can play older Nintendo games. Wii will rock you.

  10. We don't need another Myspace on Facebook Opening Up For The Public · · Score: 5, Insightful

There are already sites like MySpace and Friendster in the scene, we don't need Facebook to become one of them. The beauty of Facebook was that it was somewhat of a closed community where people were on the same level, if you will. College is a society on its own and Facebook allows the sharing of a lot of commonalities and close-knit ties with people in your campus as well as others. If you open the floodgates for the public, you'll just bring in an onslaught of stalkers (the newsfeed only makes things worse). There's already been quite the resentment for allowing high-schoolers to sign up for Facebook, what now for the common public?

  11. Why the CAPS lock key? on War Declared on Caps Lock Key · · Score: 2, Interesting

I find myself using it pretty often as I'm coding. Sure, there are two Shift keys but I can't afford that kind of temporary efficiency drop. If there's any key that they should nix, it should be the Insert key, or maybe the Scroll Lock key (do any of you even know what it's used for?). I've noticed some of the Microsoft keyboards have gotten rid of Insert key, which is a good start. I've never had a reason to use that damned key other than to hit it again to toggle it off. Keep the Caps lock key, get rid of these two mentioned above. F11 key, you're next...

  13. Micro design on Is Microprocessor/Controller Design Dead? · · Score: 2, Informative

I'm a recent college grad and I took the embedded course they offered here as my main design course. We worked with Atmel AT91 (ARM) using eCos as the embedded OS. In the course we not only worked on the microprocessor architecture, but also interfaced it with hardware that we designed and built ourselves (not just your run of the mill "read the ambient temperature and do something about it" projects, but stuff like building signal boosters, RF controllers, ethernet controllers, etc). Needless to say, it was a fairly taxing course. I really enjoyed the class and took a lot out of it so much that I decided to make it my career path. Companies that I have interviewed with loved the experience I got out of the course saying most other candidates having taken some embedded course never go as far as making the onboard LEDs blink in some special pattern or displaying text on an LCD. The issue I found with looking for the right embedded job was it seemed like being proficient in design was merely a secondary qualification. Most companies working with embedded systems expect candidates to be specialized, if not at least familiar, with specific technologies. Look at Motorola's job postings. They not only expect some embedded experience, but also experience with stuff like TDMI, RF, or sometimes even TCP/IP. Unfortunately I didn't land my ideal embedded systems design job. In fact, the company I now work with hired me because of my embedded experience, but the system they're using that was embedded-based is being converted to be run from a full-scale computer system. I can't say for sure whether or not companies are moving away from microprocessors, but as with any industry, demands for certain resources (in this case, processing power/capability) are increasing. Microprocessors may one day not be sufficient for large-scale projects.
