Learn to trust your consumers a little and focus on adding value to the material, and then people will buy your content.
Or not, since now they can make a copy for free. So how exactly do you add so much value to it that I would go to the DVD store to buy instead of my friend's house to make a copy of the product he bought? Yeah, yeah someone has to buy it first (unless it's all over the bittorrent sites) but that's moot here.
Like Slashdot readers want to see that Unix is just as annoying as Vista.
Oh, no wonder this didn't get modded up like it should. The poster at the top of the page clearly is complaining about all of the UAC annoyances that pop-up during installation of all those programs after a clean install of Vista, and not the weeks-later use of Vista where, like you, I've found it to be just fine. However you are right that turning off UAC temporarily after a clean install is a good idea.
What a bunch of bullshit. All you do is coat linux with sugar, no substance. It's not easier. Just ask my friend who takes about 5x longer than me to access a file on his unix ftp server compared to getting the same file added to my windows-based ftp server. Or my favorite is when he takes 10x longer than me resetting a password for my account on his unix-based box. And he's been doing this for a few years now. He flies on a Window$ box. I also love how this kind of unix fan boy junk gets modded up so high.
Don't forget the 1000 hours they'll spend making it accessible to all of their peripherals: follow the procedure...
0) "Bummer my shit doesn't plug in and playback with the CD that came with it, maybe this "free" OS sucks a$$" 1) find instructions 2) figuring out about arj and other non-std compression (or fill in the blank) formats 3) reading instructions 4) calling geek friends for help 5) printing instructions 6) "oops wrong driver, better keep searching oh wait this is the wrong distro./kernel etc." 7) Get laughed at by Windows fangirl for wasting time you could've spent chasing a$$
I digress
I disagree with a key component of your argument: "Here's the situation: DRM is unworkable, for technical reasons, for the same reason that software copy-protection has been unworkable and will continue to be so."
Then why can't I make a working copy of Diablo I or Diablo II Play Disc (for backup purposes - I've destroyed one Diablo II CD from overuse)? I'd say software copy protection exists that is unbreakable.
If by competitive bidding process you mean Haliburton got awarded contracts when bidding much higher than their competitors, than yes it was "competitive".
The same reason it took the government over 3 years to start handing Iraq contracts to companies besides Haliburton.

OK then how would you feel if, let's say, your Mother was killed and they never caught the guy/gal who committed her grisly murder? What's done is done, your Mom is gone for good. There's nothing that can be done except "make sure it doesn't happen again", right?
Now you can halfway empathize with parents of soldiers lost in this illegal war, started by an illegaly elected president.
How is a statistical anomaly that wouldn't happen 599,999 out of 600,000 times equate to 95%? These are the odds against the exit polls being off by such large percentages in certain key Ohio districts (see Robert Kennedy Jr.'s article in Rolling Stone). Obviously, lightning didn't strike here, instead the voting machines used in these elections were tampered between voting and tallying.
And so it's obvious by your post that SUVs (and all the other CO2 emissions) mustn't have caused THIS current warming. What a way to think. Talk about not taking responsibility.
We USED to exist during a much warmer period, hence your reference to tree ring and ice core gas data that points to warmer years than '06 in the last few thousand, but that doesn't change the fact that the Earth is warming at an unprecedented rate now, ONLY after SUVs (or insert your industrial revolution-era equivalent CO2 belchers).
I find it reprehensible that comments like this get modded so high. Too many idiots out there blindly and ignorantly believing what the media feeds them.

Actually, the Colorado ski resorts located in the Rocky Mtn range haven't been hit that hard with snow this year. In fact, most resorts (Steamboat Springs notably) are at average to below-average base snow depths right now. Of course, this could all change with some severe snow dumps in Feb and Mar...
Instead the "front range" (area east of the Rockies) has been getting the brunt of the storms. But yeah, you don't hear Coloradoans using this as an excuse that global warming isn't man-influenced.
It's a start!
You don't see non-Arab whites, blacks or latinos terrorizing any aviation passengers, do you?
Call me racist? Nope, I hate all people equally.
By all means someone should correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe a dimmer doesn't actually save on power use, because the "dimming" mechanism is merely a (forgive the lack of electronics terms) a device that increases resistance. i.e. the lamp is drawing just as much power as before, but the dimming mechanism adds a bunch of resistance to effectively lower the amount of power going to the bulbs, so all the power (100% not 75%) is still being drawn from the grid and entering your house.
A little unfair to compare the Dell with a 3yr warranty to the Mac with just 1 year. That can add considerably to the price of a Dell. Also, it's unreasonable how much is shown to upgrade the Dell with another processor. I just ordered a server from them and the extraXeon 2.66 GHz processor was given to me at checkout. They are running all kinds of deals on second processors right now, so $900 for that particular add-on is bullshit, yet that one part equates to nearly %30 of the entire cost of the quoted Dell! So I still say Macs are more expensive.
Nice link, though.
So you obviously don't care about the huge discrepancy between cost of a Mac (HIGH) and a PC (relatively LOW), Mr "I never have an obsolute computer". Good for you. Now, at least respond to more than just 1 of the parent poster's well-written list of 8 big reasons Windows is better than Mac/Linux. Your whole quote about linux being the devil is so typical of Mac users. Melodramatic little wire-rimmed glasses wearing self-declared studs. You go, mac fanboy!
You are right that it is definitely easier on the user to stream it using more conventional means, but think about this:
Without bittorrent being the distribution method, there is simply no way you can enjoy the movie while attempting to watch it during the streaming process because it will stop playing periodically or play very "chunkily". I base this comment on the fact that, using Google video, a video I attempted to watch wasn't downloading nearly fast enough for this to work. I have a 6mbps down (1.5 mbps up) Qwest DSL line. Even with this nice high speed internet connection, the filesize of HD content is simply too huge to use the classic "one uploader, multiple downloaders" scheme. Using Azureus, pieces of a torrent can be downloaded in their entirety and then accessed prior to the entire torrent finishing its download, so you could technically watch parts of the HD content before it's finished. Yes, people have to continue seeding for a few days after they finish for this to work, but it's a vastly more efficient use of bandwidth opposed to one ISP doing all of the uploading and every video viewer's ISP only downloading the data.
FYI with Azureus and a popular torrent, I can get download rates above 400KB/sec and upload consistently at over 80KB/sec.
You shouldn't have to get over, but unfortuantely in the US people are either oblivous or purposefully malevolent when it comes to getting over to the right for fast approaching vehicles. I'll never forget how angry my colleague from Germany became as he would get on someone's ass to try and force them to move over to the right and, being a$$hole - or just uninformed - Americans they, of course, ignored him. Meanwhile he's about to have a heart attack he was so mad!
So if you read TFA all you get to find out new is that, using a neat x-ray imaging technique, researchers found a how-to/what-for manual etched onto one of the bronze plates but won't tell the public what's in it.

Wrong. Installing an app brings up the UAC prompt.

Uhhh you can do a lot about it!

Upload some shows for a change instead of just downloading shows off of Dime and sticking around for awhile to try and get your ratio up.

Glass-etching cream? Come on, sister it's called Hydrofluoric acid. Yeah - an acid, not a cream. Let me guess you "hated" chemistry right?
