Hmm, I have bought two dimmable CFLs. One sort-of works. One sort-of doesn't work - when trying to dim it, it only flashes a few times, but it does run at full power. The one that sort-of works, is partially dimmable. Soooo, YMMV...

  11. Bulbs are heating my home on US To Extinguish (Most) Incandescent Bulb Sales By 2012 · · Score: 1

I live in Canada and heat my home probably 80% of the year. If I change all the bulbs to more efficient ones, my electricity bill will go down and my gas bill will go up. The same thing would happen if I would change my fridge for a more efficient one. Most electricity in Canada comes from hydro dams, so switching to efficient bulbs may very well increase the CO2 emissions country wide.

  12. Driving shotgun... on British Drivers Destroying Surveillance Cameras · · Score: 1

Traffic cameras were tried about 35 years ago in South Africa. There, a large part of the population is armed, with the result that the cameras were taken out almost as fast as they were put up and the fad literally went up in smoke and blew over rather quickly. I'm surprised that it took so long for people to revolt against automated government spying in the UK.

  14. Re:Question about platform security on Inside a Modern Malware Distribution System · · Score: 3, Insightful

Actually, there are vastly more Linux systems out there than Windows systems. Each year about 300 million Linux devices are produced - most cell phones and routers. These devices have a life span of 5 years or more, meaning that there should be about 2 billion Linux devices out there. In contrast, there are only about 600 million Windows devices. Also, note that there are more Linux servers on the internet, than Windows servers. The simple fact that these Linux devices and servers are mostly secure, while the Windows machines are mostly insecure, therefore has nothing to do with numbers.
