But he seems actually worried mainly about tenured professors who are doing good research, because they aren't paying enough attention to teaching. Good teachers need to exist, but so do good researchers--- the problem with today's university is not that there are too many good senior researchers. If anything, the opposite.
The problem is researchers and teachers get jumbled into the same mass when it comes to advertising. Having the best theoretical physicists doing research does nothing for an physics undergrad.
By the way...how do you keep the sand out of your nose?
So... it is fine for someone to argue his point of view only if it validates yours and counter-arguments are forbidden? I am neither agreeing nor disagreeing with him, just a bit annoyed when someone refuses to even listen to another perspective. So much for democracy...
Why would a government who wants to "control those people" embrace the globalized free market?
If the government *says* they embrace it and prevent any alternative views, for all the people know they do. This is not to sound paranoid, but if the government (or anyone for that matter) controls all sources of information, whatever they say is truth. Why would anyone disagree with the government if all anti-government propaganda is destroyed?
one thing interests the majority of consumers: games
Of course games are the primary reason people buy gaming system.
not only are people not using these functions, they're not even aware of them. the higher cost of entry may be helping the PlayStation 3 in this respect.
Considering many games are cross platform, the PS2 is still on the market with new titles, and the PS3 is the most expensive system available, there is little justification to buying one at the moment.

Since when does higher cost mean higher quality, regardless of what it can do?
In the command prompt, type "runas/user:usernameprogram".

imagine legislation that actually required the disconnection of infected bots from an ISP until it was cleaned
The problems with legislation are:
(1) the idiots in congress do not have a clue as to what a botnet is and therefore are incapable of creating anything remotely usable;
(2) the average user would not know why his computer cannot access the internet;
(3) many flat out refuse to learn good online habits until forced to and even then they will fight to the bitter end.
complain that its a police state because you cannot play pirated xbox games
There are reasons to use a modchip beyond playing pirated games. There is always the possibility of playing third party games (where do you think new companies come from?), using the hardware for something other than a gaming console (myth tv/cheap handheld/etc), or just tinkering with it. The label on the back of the system says the warranty will be voided by playing with the insides, as it should be, but that is not the same thing as saying "opening this box is reason for your arrest".
Apparently our government (this is sadly not limited to the US) has not yet realized that a majority of the tech companies in existence today got their start tinkering with previous products.
invent quite plausible excuses for why we can't get laid
More importantly, we can invent other ways to be laid that do not involve a real person. Ok, "she" may be real to you, but lets face it: if "she" comes in a box and requires an air compressor, chances are you will have a tough time introducing her to your parents.
There is one problem: if you kill all below average people, it would re-average itself. Eventually you will be on the lower end and will be killed. This will continue until only the one with the highest iq is left. Being the only one left, (s)he will, by default, have the highest iq of all people and will write an article on how the smartest people have no sex.
Therefore, we should keep the lower people. If nothing else, they make the rest of us feel better about ourselves.
The difference is that the GPL and BSD copywrites are meant to safeguard against eccessive copywriting by large companies. They are designed to protect us.
attempted to target the desktop audience and have not substantially penetrated it
Yes, they have attempted to target it. However, few oems will support linux in fear of microsoft's wrath. Of the few that do, the "choice" given to users is pathetic at best. If it is failing on the desktop, it is not because of inferiority in any way; rather, it is due to microsoft's threats to oems.
Out of curiosity, for what reason would you rather run windows (which includes a graphics subsystem) but not x11?

Are you implying in five to ten years people will take extra math classes because it's cool?

There is a memory leak in your code.
Like everyone else I know, he cannot remember how many he's had. That way, he feels no regrets over having "just one more".

short hand for "between a quarter million and one million"
A quarter million to a full million is still a large range.
What about (KDE vs GNOME) vs (EMACS vs VI)?
A flamewar of the flamewars would be interesting to see.
you will also get some people who make outrageous claims in order to boost their standing and/or self-esteem
This is hightened by the fact that the journalist was a woman.
This sounds like the makings of a hit reality show...
In this context, is Godwin's Rule a bad thing?
This is infinitely worse than anything Microsoft has ever done.
Apple hates Microsoft who hates Google... Which do we listen to?
FTFS: releasing the film as a free Xvid download
Believe it or not, there are legit purposes for torrents. Too bad so many people insist upon using them for not-so-legit reasons.

Its Skynet!
It will run on windows, so we have nothing to fear. Unless, of course windows becomes self aware...
From the link: UbuntuME stands for Ubuntu Muslim Editio
Hopefully it will be nothing like Windows ME.

Does that mean he is very smart or just knows the /. crowd would never give anything in return?
Don't you see that you can't have it both ways?
