  2. Re:What is a grocery store? on Microsoft Will Stream Ads To Grocery Carts · · Score: 0

Hmmmm. I am an engineering PhD student at an engineering school. Sometimes I can go to the grocery store and find things like broccoli, lime juice, and girls. I think Monday evenings are the best times to go to the grocery store; not only can I shop for milk and eggs, but frequently there are females. They were probably busy all week, and then wanted to go out on Friday and Saturday, and then on Sunday they just stayed in to recover from a fun weekend. By Monday evening they figure out that they are low on salami and bonelees, skinnless chicken breasts so they go to the supermarket and I get to meet them in line. This "in line" thing is superior to meeting shoppers on line - no waiting for a good picture or not knowing if they can string a sentence together on the fly. I also find that if I am preoccupied with talking to a gal I met buying chocolate syrup and strawberries that I am much less likely to notice any other marketing, buzzing fluorescent lights, or soothing elevator music. And then, if the girl works out, she usually does most of the shopping for me. I then cook the food and don't have to worry about shopping again until I cook something she doesn't like.

I think you should try shopping in a supermarket. Unless of course the grocery delivery girl just likes waiting on you.

I used a hole punch and then took my RFID card apart to see what was going on inside and I found wires going from the chip to the magnetic strip. If you remove the chip, does the magnetic strip still store the critical information for the card reader? Also, I was able to take my "broken" RFID card back to the bank and demand a card without the "feature." I was told they the bank is required to give me an old-fashioned card if I don't want the pay pass feature.

Also, I've heard that the chip actually stores a more detailed and complete cretit history than does your magnetic strip. So if someone takes information from my RFID, they potentially have a lot more information than just my credit card number and expiration date. Does anybody know how much information the chip actually stores?

Geez. I'm glad to know our government has our best interests in mind here and that there will be no disruption to information gathering and distribution. It is so convenient to not have a brick and mortar library with flesh and bone employees collecting and classifying information and assisting with search requests. I find it very useful to have all of my information electronically, conveniently burried!

Granted, without more information on the intended reorganization and filing of information it is difficult to say this cut is entirely a BAD thing, but I am very wary of any actions of this particular government that cut information/science/public service programs and budgets. First, they want to put all information online, and then they consider legislation to reduce internet bandwidth except for those willing to pay the telecoms lots of money, making online documents difficult to access.

From your article: "PEER Executive Director Jeff Ruch responded, 'I don't know what they consider the total budget, because there is no line item. All we know is their support for the library network is reduced by $2 million. We're wondering why a $7 billion agency is fighting so hard for this $2 million cut.'"

  19. What the EPA says about recycling on Turning Garbage into Gold · · Score: 2, Informative

    From http://www.epa.gov/epaoswer/non-hw/muncpl/recycle. htm

"In 1999, recycling and composting kept ~64 million tons of material from landfills and incinerators. Today, this country recycles 28 percent of its waste...

... 42 percent of paper, 40 percent of plastic drink bottles, 55 percent of aluminum cans, 57 percent of steel packaging, and 52 percent of appliances are now recycled."

It seems like the Baby Boom consumer generation has left us with a legacy of trash we are continuing to produce, and we should invest in the infrastructure to mine it. Sort of high-end dumpster diving. But there are problems:
    http://www.epa.gov/epaoswer/non-hw/muncpl/paper.ht m
Paper - "challenges facing recovered paper processors and manufacturers are: 1) contamination, 2) sorting, and 3) fiber degradation... inks, adhesives, food, and broken glass affect the quality of recycled paper... Office paper cannot be recycled with newspaper and maintain its fiber integrity." And then the EPA website lists nice benefits of recycled paper as well.

    http://www.epa.gov/epaoswer/non-hw/muncpl/tires/in dex.htm
Tires: "There are at least 275 million scrap tires in stockpiles in the U.S. In addition, approximately 290 million scrap tires were generated in 2003. Markets now exist for about 80 percent of scrap tires--up from 17 percent in 1990."
Doing anything with tires other than puting them in a big pile is a good idea. Tire piles are a fire hazard and are a great place for culturing things like mosquitos, rats, and skunks. In addition, tires have a very poor packing efficiency and just take up a lot of space.

...so I dont think they mind mixing up something terribly nasty or unstable in the lavatory. There are loads of neat reactions like alcohol polymerization reactions for instance that only require a drop of one acid or another to start a nice fire or nice explosion, or peroxide reactions, or hydrogen gas generating reactions. Heck, flush a pound of metallic lithium or sodium into the lav holding tank.

Remember, the planes would be over the Atlantic ocean so they would have to fly a long distance before being able to land. A damaged airplane may not make it to shore. And personally, I just dont see howprobable it is that anybody is going to have time to open the doors, deploy the emergency ramps, grab their seat cushions, and finally calmy file out of the airplane when there is a huge hole in fuselage underneath the lav. And if they just decide to set a nice little blaze, depending on its intensity and toxicity, it could either kill lots of people on board or weaken the structure of the plane or burn holes in the fuselage. It is still a long way to shore, and I dont know how long an airplane is supposed to stay afloat, but Im sure the floating time is a lot less with big holes in the bottom.
