In addition it has been shown that most of the code for the Linux kernel was developed by people who were paid to do it by Red Hat, IBM, Intel and others.

And what does this mean? Paid = better programmers? Funny, very funny. I experienced much more bad programmers who were paid that bad programmers who do their stuff because they like what they do. Paid programmers, who initially were hardware developers, physicist, even biologists, then the business changed and they were told they are now softwaredevelopers. Here is a C++ book, start reading. Some of the computer science guys were not much better. Never coded more than 100 lines of code, but they are the experts with a degree.

So I don't care how many developers in an open source projects are actually paid to contribute. This is not necessarily a sign of expertise or quality.

Attention to correctness is the bedrock trait of a good developer. Everything else comes second; security is just one property of correct code.

I disagree. This is pure lip service. Everybody wants secure code, but nobody wants to pay for it. So I infer that security and quality is not important. Whenever I submit a realistically estimated cost/time plan I can be sure that I won't get the bid. So cheap and fast, everything else comes second, or third, or fourth.

    A situation I experienced myself.
Company, which developed medical devices. Project manager: Make sure, that the gui looks nice. Me: Cannot do it, somewhere the is a problem, which causes the program to crash randomly every few hours. Project Manager: No problem. People are used that programs crash. The just start them new. But a nice gui is what sells.

So don't tell me security or quality is in the least important.

All people who were responsible for this should be labelled for the rest of their lives as sex offenders with all the consequences. Hey, they could have watched the children naked at home. I am not an American, but from what I hear from news, some people got this sex offender stigma for much more ridiculous incidents. In this case it would make sure that something like this would never happen again.
