  1. Good exposure.. on Home Depot tests Linux for remote mangament of PCs · · Score: 1

    If they go with Linux, this would be the second or third major business deployment for Linux - first the coat mfgr (was it Burlington?) and then the hotel chain. Really good business exposure.

    There was a story on NPR last Friday about a

  3. Look for more of this... on House Might Mandate Net filtering in Libraries · · Score: 1

    Since an election year is up-and-coming, we're going to be seeing more of this type of push for "values" legislation. Even ol' wooden Al "I did the net" Gore is distancing himself from Clinton by harping on "family values" and bringing them back into the gov't. The moral reaction to the Clinton administration is going to be frightening, so keep a sharp eye out and don't be surprised at anything the Washington folks dream up.

  4. This should be interesting on Red Hat IPO Details · · Score: 1

    The Red Hat folks have always stated that their business model was non-traditional. I'm sure their IPO will be as well. This is good, IMHO, 'cause it'll introduce a different way of looking at publicly traded companies. Sort of taking the OSS model to Wall Strett :). I hope they make tons of money.

    And compare the press coverage of the 1.0 kernel debut :) I was happy to read a level-headed, non-fudish not-too-technical appreciation of the 2.2 kernel. As pointed out above, there are some errors, but they don't seem intentional. Also, did anyone notice that he refered to the X Window system and not X Windows? That's pretty good.

  6. Fundamental on How to Manage Geeks? · · Score: 1

    This sums up, for me at any rate, the fundamental motivation for what I do and how I want to do it:

    "But, as important as money is to tech people, it's not the most important thing. Fundamentally, geeks are interested in having an impact. They believe in their ideas, and they like to win. They care about getting credit for their accomplishments. In that sense, they're no different from a scientist who wants credit for work that leads to a Nobel Prize. They may not be operating at that exalted level, but the same principle applies."

    That's exactly how I wish my manager would see my contribution to the company here. But no, arbitrary technical decisions reign. When that happens, all trust is lost. Fini

    I like the site: well laid-out, nice color scheme, and the sub-pages have a cool style. The front page is a bit busy, but not so much that it overwhelms. Lots of good links to info. Perhaps a bit much for a newbie, but the site does have a lot of info that can be perused and thought about. I especially liked iliad's history lesson, and the esr interview was a kicker. Overall, a nice job to the webmaster(s) and admins!

    I really like the graphics; kinda soft and friendly.

  9. RMS==gadfly on GNU Inside? · · Score: 2

    And this is good. The whole debate, brought periodically out into the open, so to speak - in forums like this keeps what has gone into Linux in the public eye. For me, it's been Linux, and will remain so - but then again who the fsck cares what I call it, but for others this is not enough. So be it. The important thing is that most of us know the history and the contributions RMS has made because we care enough about the OS to find out what goes into it. New users, at first, may not know. But, the more new users use Linux, *BSD, what-have-you, the more, little by little they, too, will learn about their roots. That is, if they care enough to read around and learn. Some new users won't. The important thing is to keep this debate going and not dismiss RMS because he at times acts - to some folks - less than rational about the name. He is important for both his contributions to the software, but also because of his philosophical ideas that are behind the creation of the software. I don't agree with some of the things he believes in; I won't call it GNU/Linux, but I sure as heck respect the man's courage in taking a sometimes unpopular stance. Just as I sure as heck admire Linus' pragmatic approach to most things political.

    I've been a sysadmin-type/network weenie for most of the past 8 yrs or so, and the one thing that still gets me down about the job is the lack of real control in some situations. Example is when technical decisions are handed down and input is disregarded - top-down solutions instead of organic ones. Nothing worse than seeing your career path detoured by bad tech.
