  1. Greenspan even grasps on Greenspan Tells Congress Bad Data Hurt Wall Street · · Score: 1

I'm so surprised by this turn of events. It seems that greenspan is even now willing to take such a risk contradicting himself. It exposes his loyalties through him attempting to draw attention from the real problem of faulty "insurance" on the pieces of nothing they piled together. Desperate times, maybe they're afraid we'll take our money back.

Who's to say if I'm gathering information or not from someone's PC unless I officially try to present it as evidence in some kind of court case... In which case I shouldn't have been getting the info in the first case and it can be thrown out. Is it just me or is this law not as bad as the article makes it out to be. And what PC repair companies already employ PI's??

The problem is noone has performed this kind of quantative research before. Sure we all "knew" it, but there was a time when we all "knew" the world was flat. That's the point of rigorous scientific research. At least now we have a few words and pictures to point to and say, "see?" whenever we try to draw conclusions from their findings.

HAHA right??? It was so intense when they were trapped in front of the military and you just see them advancing on foot towards the monster... the director said he wanted to do it iraq-home-video style, and he pulled that part off pretty nice. Personally, I was sitting in the 3rd row and my stomach was turning a little as the camera went crazy, but it did add a big sense of reality. I think it was a pretty good movie if you're a twenty something, and i recommend watching it in the big screen at least once.

my biggest problem was that the girl who was bit was like bleeding and fainting and noone offered her any medical attention

also, i kinda like how they didn't actually explain anything but let the movie do it for you... it adds alot of mystery to the movie when you only know what the characters know, and irony can still be introduced by letting different characters know different things (like when the main char had no idea about those little monsters)

  15. Re:Use a common portal then... on Social Network Fatigue Coming? · · Score: 1

Personally, I use myspace and facebook. They're great tools to keep in touch with your friends who you might not hang out with every day, but still would like to communicate with on a regular basis. You can post photos of what you've been up to, how your life is going, etc. Imagine a "christmas card" that's ever changing and instantaneous (also year round and much more personal :P). Also, many people are tired of the junk they get in their typical email boxes (alot of them use yahoo, hotmail, etc) so myspace is a good place to talk w/ friends w/o having to worry about spam. Also, you can meet people with the seemingly safe barrier of the internet protecting your self esteem and self security. You can see what people look like too before you meet them, so checking out that hot girl from someone's class, or getting to know people before/after a party you attend is insanely easy. "What's your myspace?" "oh mine's myspace.com/whatever" Also, bands give theirs out during shows, and you can hear all different kinds of music that you might not have experienced before, which usually gets pre-approval from friends (if they've got it on their page, they especially like it).

Basically, these networks are for you to keep a large circle of friends without much effort. Especially when people have internet access for a good part of their day, sites as this can become both fun and addicting. Imagine stamp collecting for the new century. One important thing to note is that it isn't for "technocrats", it's for relative newbies and provides an EXCELLENT place for people with little to no experience with web technologies and the inner workings of websites to gain not only first hand exposure, but, in several cases, first hand experience dealing with code.

Also, keep in mind, at many times during a young adult's life they seek to impress their peers as opposed to their parents or other authority figures. This is an instant gratification system where you can get immediate feedback for your comments and opinions. Looks like a different version of slashdot's own comment system to me. Instead of commenting inanely about world events and technology, they/we comment on subjects that are boring to begin with and don't need our help ^_~

To sum it up, I think these kinds of sites have, if not revolutionized, at least changed to a large degree the social structure within high schools and colleges where internet access is a common occurance. Some people may get "tired" of hopping sites, but I know that lots of people look forward to getting online every day to see what kinds of messages people have left them, pictures others have posted, and potential friends (and _friends_) may be waiting for them.

  17. Rat Pellet on 40 Percent of World of Warcraft Players Addicted · · Score: 1

I think one of the reasons, besides the social networking, that WoW is "addicting" is that completing quests and turning them in for rewards is like hitting a bar for a pellet. There are clearly stated guidelines that you must follow, and if you do, you receive a pre-determined item. Now, on the the fact that it's an "addiction", sure, I played it for a year, and I pulled all nighters, and I also did some pretty irresponsible stuff because of it, but that's exactly it. I, personally, wasn't responsible. I chose to make those decisions. I think people are throwing the term addiction around alot these days, without actually realizing the gravity of the word. Talk to a heroin addict, or meth head, and then maybe you'll see some addiction.

This man seems rather intelligent, maybe he's using it as a feint, as in "yeah I own the dvd, that's my defense" when in actuality his lawyers (which i'm sure cost him a pretty penny) are reviewing logs and scanning his computer for the files, just to make sure it wasn't actually there. (assuming he didn't download it) And sure, he might have downloaded the file, but would he really spend millions if he was guilty? (it could all be a bluff, and right when the MPAA is trying very hard to get it dropped, he gets them to pay for his lawyers and leaves scot-free, illegal download in-hand) Just thoughts :D
