Do some people undestand reality? Don't Altivore do the same things as Carnivore? Why must they use Carnivore instead?
If sueing on patent infringement becomes successful (for Germany that is), then the Anglo-saxons will use Echelon to fight kiddy porn, and as you know, that's a holy war in which any method is authorized...

    I'm sceptical

You remember that slashdot article - a letter from 2020 -? Perhaps that article on NTFS-legislation is more fresh in the memory.

Hacking is defined as 'unauthorised data-access', what about reverse engeneering, what about writing a compatible protocol. Will 'patent infringement' be hacking? What about Sony Playstation emulators?

This is too bad. Supposedly, (just hypothatically) I find the magical holy grail of factoring primes... is that hacking? Can I publish this?

This is too bad, I thought I'd be safe from US laws here in Europe, reading slashdot I realize that all sorts of laws and lawsuits will deteriate my freedom. So this will change then?

What's next, regulations on internet protocols? Man is allowed to browse and mail, kill IRC, kill Napster, kill Gnutella?

This smells like a tool for technological censorship... will I need a license-to-programm in future?

Guys were harrassed, guys got scared and project was sent to the bin.

    3. You do not dial up in a public area, as someone might see your face, you drive to somewhere in the middle of nowhere to do your thing. Note that you check for camera's on highways, the point of return on the highway needs to be 30 minutes later than you logged off

I've read the story on linuxworld about a week ago, in my opinion, there are too many assumptions. 'The law is the law, deal with it', where as a matter of fact, the author does not recognize the possibility of laws changing.

I think Sony's PR machine is passed by. Certain people reading this might think, well, let's destroy Sony's revenue by not buying their products.
Same as here in Holland, a dutch media station put their radio shows in real-audio on the web. Sony didn't want that because the fan could listen to their favourite artist as many times as they wanted. No, the real fan is patient, and waits until his song appears on the radio.
This dutch (public) media station took action by boycotting anything coming from Sony (like Oasis).
It happens that this story is not even a month old.
Seems like the Sony PR machine is passed again, and no concessions with the public is sought.

    3. Napster is internet-changing-the-world thing

Legality is not an issue, laws are simply unsuitable to a lot of readers here. Legality is not an argument, the law has to change. Legality is ignored in this discussion. Legality is the curse other than the cure in the Napster case.
Opposing Napster isn't necesary ethical, multi-billion dollar corporates sucking more consumer money isn't either.

I'm quite pessimistic on this. Power monopolies/oligopolies exist by 'channels' and 'networks' inherited or build on personal contact, usually in distribution of the product or manufacturer of the product. These channels get power and decide what people like, like it or not, the alternatives can be hard to find.
The internet breaks down the barriers of distribution, channels and networks get hurt. Now it's the RIAA and MPAA thing, next there is the physical distribution of products, these channels and networks are now attacked by broker-websites. Where I'm from, it doesn't exist that long, but lot's of people are very pissed already.
