You can also share drives between computers/OSes. This works out especially well for blade centers where you can share a base system install with 20 blades. Also, if a system goes down it's pretty easy to simply take out your Fibre Channel HBA and stick it in a similar or identical system and run just as you were before. It's too bad the 8gb/s cards cost ~$1,500.
Oh, on a related note, you can do FC over Ethernet. You can also do Ethernet over Fibre Channel. Yep. You can have 8gb/s TCP/IP connections. Or you can settle for a $10 2gb/s card. (annoyingly though, you can't find a fibre channel switch no matter what the speed for less than a few thousand dollars).
That's why they should sell updates/upgrades. Make the Service Packs bigger and add more focus to adding features and sell them. They could downright require you to update in order to use other software which would provide a more continuous revenue stream than people buying a Brand New OS(tm) ever 3 years.
They could release something equivalent to a "major service pack" one a year and charge $50 for it.
I'm a big believer in FOSS, but were I a windows user, I think the equivalent of going from unpatched XP to SP3 would be worth $50.
Over ambitious as always. I say work on improving XP . Make it more efficient and add features. Perhaps get all those other features that were promised 10 years ago working. Like WinFS. Like a dozen other things.
MS is just digging itself deeper.
I know it would never happen, but if MS wanted to pretty much annihilate linux all it has to do is make a service pack 4 for XP to provide enhanced security and functionality and most importantly efficiency for XP and then release XP as open source (or more likely 'shared source'), accept user patches and work with the community just like an enterprise Linux distribution. With OpenXP, why would anyone need linux?
(Note: I don't use windows. I'm a linux-only user, and the above is my sincere opinion. For the love of god, don't mod me troll because you think I'm an MS fanboy, an OSS zealot, or a/. troll. I'm being quite serious.)
I know you're joking, but the thing doesn't use bulbs (thankfully) it uses LEDs and/or lasers. I've been tracking the development of these projectors for a while (namely, the PicoP) and am hoping they do a a big, high res Home Theatre version. Even if it winds up costing as much as the traditional HD Theatre having a 10,000 to 100,000+ Hour life versus a 2,000 hour life on a $350 bulb makes these projectors much more attractive. Also, since lasers are being used you never need to adjust the focus. Sweet!
I just don't like paying for stuff and refuse to pay $50 for a game.
I'll wait until it's open sourced (ala quake) or just not worry about it. My favorite games to play include Urban Terror (based on ioQuake), tremulous, warzone2120 and other free (speech/beer) games.
*shrugs* just not really the linux way to pay for high quality software.
Forgive me for piggy backing on a troll's frist psot, but, who the FUCK said the internet was meant for children? Why does it have to be kid friendly? Protective parents don't let their kids hangout and befriend strangers (adults or otherwise) unsupervised. Why should exploring the internet be any different? Just because a company attempts to target or exploit a demographic through some medium doesn't mean the medium needs to be sanitized for that demographic.
Ahh.. internet censorship, hell, censorship in general... such a pet peeve of mine.
Nano has Syntax Highlighting, Auto-indentation, multiple-buffers, regex search and replace.
Combined with screen it's quite the IDE, IMHO.
Of course for you GUI-is-a-must people. Medit (mooedit) is quite nice. GTK2 app with builtin console and all the other stand features you expect from a code editor.
China is only our friend for economic reasons. China is our enemy for economic reasons as well. China is poised to be the next world super power and already has the US pandering to it. It's not news media outlets trying to make China the enemy, it's very realistic that China may make a play for total domination. The military (I have a few friends and family with such connections) have been playing war games and drills where the enemy is played by Asian-Americans in Chinese army uniforms. Makes one take time to reflect, yes?
China has been making some semi-aggressive moves as well. The blinding and disabling of US spy satellites, the continued censorship and oppression of their people. One may say that only appears bad to paranoid, xenophobic, jingoists, but what do we consider China? It is an economic powerhouse with an ancient culture and a chip on its shoulder. The majority of its people live in third world conditions (and analysts predict this won't change despite an ever growing economy) who are closely monitored and censored.
China is dangerous and unfortunately the US and the rest of the world is more vulnerable (Economically) to China than China is to the rest of the world.
You don't need a railgun for point defense. Current system work well and can be improved upon with better sensors, servos, and computers. Railguns are like non-radioactive nukes. Do you realize what 32 megajoules of kinetic energy would do at impact? It doesn't take much to knock down a missile. Disrupt its exhaust, put a bullet through its guidance system and it's pretty much taken care of. 8 megajoules is enough to liquefy a building. 32 is more like taking out a block.
People seem to think this guy is implying a matrix-style simulation. Physical stimuli is rendered by a 'computer' and supplied to our separately defined brains.
As I understand it, he is saying that a computer has quarks and other sub-atomic particles being simulated. These particles have set behavior defined such as energy properties and interaction rules, conservation of mass and energy. Once the simulation is started the particles proceeded forth from the big bang, the origin point (0,0,0,0) -- center of the universe, beginning of time. As the particles separated the basic forces formed, electromagnetism, gravity, weak force, and strong force. And so on the story goes of the formation of the universe. So it's not a question of keeping up with the simulation because we wouldn't be able to observe since we can't go beyond the level of those sub-atomic particles.
I RTFA, didn't RTFP, so I can't say I understand for sure, but this is my semi-original idea that resulted from too introspection and scifi movies.
The student is doing some web based assignment. Maybe research, maybe some web test off the school's server. Whatever.
Whether the student was allowed to use or install Firefox isn't really in question (though it is something to consider).
The student was told to do the assignment (which the teacher probably didn't realize didn't require IE, just a browser). He uses firefox. The teacher tells him to close firefox and do the assignment, not realizing that using firefox and the assignment aren't mutually exclusive. The student blows the teacher's demands off knowing their ridiculous. The teacher gets irate and has detention assigned.
I made many assumptions obviously, as has everyone else who has ventured to speculate. From my view, detention is a bit much since the teacher is largely at fault here too.
All the same, woo firefox!
P.S. I've done web assignments in IE because it was the only browser installed (and I the only real alternative at the time, Netscape, wouldn't work with the IE only site). Crash city! I lost hours of work that way.
Just kidding, but seriously, I have a manager who is a bit like that. Constantly spouting BS about vision and strategy and contractor well-being. I thought the movies like Office Space and shows like Dilbert were hyperbole, but cursed affliction, it's true. They exist. How soul crushing, no?
I was moderating that thread but I figured I'd point out it's high time we... er... repurpose all those payphones before they're thrown away. Perhaps we'll be seeing more payphones on ebay?
(C'mon, who doesn't want a pay phone to hack around with?)
Coke at one point in time had cocaine in it. It caused headache's in many people and the FDA forced them to take it out and reformulate. It maintained the name and the same great taste though.

We'll have to wait for 70+ years after Lucas kicks it for that, I'm betting.

What a stupid question. Of course it can. Ever had to sit through 3 meetings in a row?
Turns a matter of hours into a matter of weeks.
