I tried Crossover Office at the weekend, allowing me to install and run Office XP under Kubuntu 7.04. I was fair impressed that it worked, seemed nice and stable (superficially)
So that combination is more than possible. I was also impressed by the Wine integration in KDE. My knoppix disk lets me just double click on Windows EXEs and run them! That's some serious voodoo.
Erm, maybe after they've bought it (DoubleClick) they're going to fire (execute) all of their employees and burn their office to the ground?
And then, replace all of their adverts with Click On The Monkey ads where you really do win something if you Click On The Monkey.
I remember, back in the day, when banner adverts first started to proliferate and I actually tried to win something by clicking on the monkey...
I believe I won some malware.
He's not armed, because we don't have guns. Illegal guns are not 'flooding' London, or anywhere in the UK. Gun crime is indeed on the up, but is the solution really to arm the civilian population? I'll help you out here, the answer is, "No".
Frankly I just think you all just don't want people to take your toys away.
Here's a thought, I wonder what American women think. I wonder if they would prefer to have a world where civilian fire arms are illegal?
Or how about some statistics on the outcome of these armed assaults on households with and without a home arsenal.
2) Where do you live then? Baghdad? I live in Portsmouth and the worst that ever happened is a drunk attacked me. Do you really need to kill somebody for trying to steal your TV? Do thieves often sneak upstairs to kill everybody before taking said TV? The reason you need a gun to defend your house is because the criminals can buy them with the orange juice and frozen peas.
Don't you realise we're all laughing at you? It's like watching a comedy sketch. It's unbelievable, we wonder why the hell you actually let people own them. Every time one of your f****d up kids blows away half his school we know that you're STILL NOT GOING TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT!! It's insane! We had, to my knowledge, one incident. The Dunblane Massacre and that was it, we banned them. You can still own sporting shotguns but as there doesn't appear to be any shotgun murders about, this seems to be properly controlled (they're all kept in secure storage)
Guns are for soldiers.

PS When I refer to you, I don't actually mean 'you' but I'm having a rant at the American nation in general.
I have Dapper at the mo, to which I've *just* managed to get the latest nVidia drivers and mythtv 0.20 working (not sure if there is any reason to upgrade to Edgy, unless it includes that funky compiz/GLX desktop?)
sudo sed -e 's/\sdapper/ edgy/g' -i/etc/apt/sources.list
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
That first line, what's that all about? As in, what does 'sed' do and what do those parameters mean?
Second line, OK, that updates everything and then upgrades to Edgy. Last time I just formatted and reinstalled (I wanted to try LVM)
3 years VB6, 3 years C#, specifically NETCF on WinCE. Some ASP.NET
If I worked there [US] for a few years at that wage, I could save enough to buy a proper house (not a flat) back here [UK].
Unless taxes/cost of living are proportionally higher in the US?
How xenophobic are US employers? Will they employ foreigners?
Not only that, I think it'd be fun to go work somewhere foreign for a few years. I don't think I want to stick to one job and one town for my whole life.
Part of me wants to agree with you, when I'm coding I leave the mouse idle and use the keyboard only and having to move the mouse pisses me off.
However, when I'm using an inherently graphical application my opinion is reversed. Also, the middle button to close is not intuitive. You can still use Alt+F,C or Ctrl+W in the new version but now people who favour the mouse are catered for as well, and catered for in a way that does not require reading the manual. I think that's quite important in GUI design, the perfect interface should be transparent to the user and require no previous knowledge of the application.
My favourite example is iTunes. I've seen people who consider computers black voodoo magick pick up that app and use it with no instruction. Shame they keep 'improving' it...:\
It is true now that the application lacks a single button to close the current tab though. But you can't please everybody all of the time.;)
Middle clicking closes the tab. Not exactly intuitive is it though? All right for people who read the manual but where does that leave the other 99%?

Hi, I also run Firefox on Linux (Ubuntu Breezy). Would somebody care to explain to me how I am sandboxed? Is this intrinsic or is it something I have to setup myself?
You think that's bad?
Try calculating how much it will cost you in "microtransactions" to "complete" Gran Turismo HD: Classic
I'm not a fanyboy, But at ~50c a car with 750 cars......Sony can go screw themselves.

Richard Dawkin's "The Root Of All Evil"
Did anybody else watch this?
Easily the best program I've seen all year, hoorah for Channel 4.
THE most scary person in it was Pastor Ted Haggard of the New Life Church.
I find him more frightening than any of the "other side" because he apparently has the right ear of your eejut president. AND he's as blind, zealous and as fundamental as any Islamic terrorist.
And now, much to my shame, religious schools are opening in England. Parents are segregating the children and choosing schools where their children will be in the ethnic majority.
Theres even speculation that Sharia law may begin to influence the British legal system.
People are asking for it, requesting special student loans to not contravene Sharia.
Inheritance laws to take into account allowing four wives.
It's all getting a bit scary isn't it?
J1M.
Why? Now M$ can sue for patent infringement or something...

Office 2007 PRO OEM and Vista Home Premium OEM is ~£275 in the UK. That's about $550.
Not that Dell are going to pass that saving on to the end user.

You know, by using that joke you're probably infringing on Mr Izzard's IP, or joke patents. He could probably threaten to sue you.
Guns don't kill people, people kill people...
...but I think the gun helps.

So without a gun you would, what, watch? Fix him drinks?
Personally I would bite off anything I could reach.

Unreal 2: XMP
Finest multi player game ever made.
One of these days I must get around to playing UT:XMP (U2:XMP is, sadly, dead, remade for Unreal Tourney though)

It's so cool, it look exactly like it would in any pulp sci-fi TV series.
It looks like this translucent blue glowing.. stuff.
This picture shows it as pink, but I've only seen blue before
I realise that this is not what energy looks like, because energy is an abstract concept. But finally, some future tech that looks like it aught to. :D

Yes but we voted for them to get rid of the Tories, remember?
So now we have to vote LibDem to get rid of Nu Labour.
Um...

Yeah, sounds like someone in marketing from RFID-Corp got to them ('them' being the politicians)...

Is this where Bush's "Save The World Through Tech not Kyoto" plan takes us?
Good job. Not.
All this because nobody wants to put any personal effort into saving the world. Nice. Thanks.

I am a new linux user.
I have installed Ubuntu (Dapper)
What I would really like my OS to do, is work when I put in a DVD-RW, create a DVD image and press the record button.
Not just say ERROR and nothing else.
And disk tools, nice and easy RAID and LVM management tools.
Then again, I've just learnt how to do echo "$DATETIME" > /something/acpi/alarm and have my PC turn itself back on for mythTV recordings! 8D
In fact... MYTHTV!!
It's a real love/hate relationship at the moment.
As opposed to Windows, which was more hate/acceptFate
Then again, roll on pretty. At least it's evolving quickly with new releases.
Regards,
J1M.

What does an average tech worker do in America then?
I'm a professional programmer, is that average tech?
'cos I earn ~$10000 less.
Maybe I should move to America.

That's the feature that makes it for me, being able to close a tab without having to switch to it or use the context menu.
