works for me on t41. linux 2.6.23-rt1 with default acpi support on gentoo distribution.

    > Does Linux work on *any* current laptop out of the box (Ubuntu or Fedora)?

on many laptops. but running 'out of the box' for many ppl is not what they want. they want to customize their box and adopt it to their needs. something very hard to understand for FUDers like you....

  9. this news should be at least updated... on Linspire Accused Of Misusing Creative Commons Art · · Score: 1

with info from klown's web site from http://www.dugnet.com/klown :

"IMPORTANT: Recent controversy involving Lindows/Linspire Recently Slashdot posted an article that accuses Lindows of violating creative commons license, this is an incorrect statement. I posted the CC license in response to learning that Linspire was using my graphics without permission. The reason for that was to make things clear for future problems, not Linspire.

The truth is that Linspire was using my graphics without first obtaining permission. I'm currently in talks with them to get this issue resolved. But just for the record, this is not an issue involving the newly posted creative commons license. I still hold authorship rights to the graphics.

In short, the slashdot headline was false - as well as posted prior to Linspire being notified, but Linspire was using the graphics without first requesting permission. As soon as they were notified, the graphics were removed from the promotional animation.

Although this does not clear Linspire of copyright infringment

from the early beginning this news is very tendecious... it reminds me of Transactional analysis communication's game Now I've Got You - You Son of a Bitch which most of the FLOSS community tends to play against Linspire... i don't like it... it also says something about those peole:

"NIGYSOB vindicates the "ya just can't trust nobody, nowadays" paranoia and a he's (you're, she's, they're) not-OK existential position (usually secondary). P believes in the social (Adult-Adult) level and is usually unaware of the ulterior level in which P's Parent is saying to V's Child "I've been watching you, hoping you'd slip up. You did so, now I've got you . . . " P often sets V up for a predictable fall in order to further the vicious cycle of anger/aggression/anger and to relieve internal psychic pressure from a repressed not-OK Child.

This game can be immensely destructive. Second degree can lead to litigation and prison, third degree to injury or homicide. Play can move in several directions. The relationship between P and V may end, with each moving into new games (Poor Me, SWYMD, etc.) as Victims for a well-intentioned Rescuer. If P and V continue in a love/hate relationship, then additional rounds may ensue, with P collecting righteousness and triumph stamps and V masochistically collecting humiliation. Alternately, retaliation by V can lead into a game of Uproar, or V may proceed, with hurt feelings, into other victim games such as: Kick Me, Poor Me, There I Go Again, or Wooden Leg.

Tendency is entrenched in NIGYSOB players and successful antithesis usually requires therapeutic intervention, aimed at insight, release of repressed rage, and deconfusion of the Child.

  10. Software is like music.... on The Paradox of Choice · · Score: 1

you can't get better song if all of the musicians of the world will work on just one song.

that's the reason why you can't do the relevant advantage with just buying big number of programmers.

some tunes/software is best done if you have 3 ppl in the process (drums, guitar and bass) and some needs more ppl (percussions, synths, effects, vocals, more vocals ;). These days i like simple scripts done by song writers playing acoustic guitars.

having that in mind you sholdn't go and just buy everything. most of the times you can't have geniuses just because they don't want to be bought. most of them work on Free Software ;)

look at their policies about search requests not from the regular browsers or the limititations of "great service" GoogleAPI (1000 requests per day. yay)....

    from Google Terms of Service:
"You may not send automated queries of any sort to Google's system without express permission in advance from Google." or "Please do not write to Google to request permission to "meta-search" Google for a research project, as such requests will not be granted."

yes, every person should work hard to maximize the profit. we all need just dreams of having billion dollars.

google is in the same direction like yahoo or microsoft, they just have better sense for time scale. long term. that is the goal.

there is a very good article on linux o'reillynet about ipaq running linux...

compaq hosts and sponsors the handhelds.org site, which is a community resource center, primarily for developers, hosting Web, FTP, CVS, and mailing-list services.. the site focuses on linux under strongarm SA11xx processors, such as the ipaq and the yopy, but does not mention work on other processors such as MIPS or 68xxx...

there are few distributions running well on ipaq:
#1# familiar distribution, a lightweight package with python and XFree86 with anti-aliased fonts, using the blackbox window manager. familiar also includes a new packaging system called ipkg, which is like RPM or DEB packages for desktop Linux. compaq had at the beginning its own hh distribution but after a while it swap to familiar...
#2# an extension of familiar is initimate... its goal is to provide "full-blown" distribution including doom, konqueror, mpeg players and stuff like that... but for all of that u will need extra microdrive coz by default ipaq doesn't have enough space...

there are few others but there are not free like trolltech's Qt Palmtop Environment or transvirtual technology's pocketlinux which goal is to provide a java runtime instead of pure linux environment....

imho when u have ssh (included by default) and rxvt w/ gprs modem it is enough to go with it ;) and with familiar dis u will have that and much much more...

    you can find everything on:
    http://www.opaque.net/ming or

..i tried it and it is perfect...

there is also another project on:
    http://www.the-labs.com/PerlFlash
an interface of libswf.a (which was written by Paul Haeberli) for Perl called Perl Flash (Flash.pm)... i tried that one long time ago and it worked, but prefer python to perl so i quit it ;))

i almost forgot... olivier debon did GPL flash library which comes with three freely redistributable tools (just for linux):
    netscape plug in
stand alone player which can play movies on root window so its suitable for screensavers
    KDE screen saver tool
    you can find it on:
    http://www.swift-tools.com/Flash/

you can still hate bad flash sites but check if there are done by open sourced tools just in case to protect you of contradictions in your mind which sometimes could trigger some real bad psychosis ;)
