Officer: Jones, I want you to give the visiting people false information, convincing them that more support for the mission would help accomplish the mission.
    Jones: That's false information?

The information given in order to convince someone of something is not the same as what one wishes to convince someone of. The truth of one is not related to the truth of the other. That's a subtlety (and only the first...) I would not expect to be lost on a psy operative.

It might not be ethical, but how is this different than organizations that lobby congress? This seems blown up. Would it be ok if instead of being called "Psy-Ops" they were called "Public Relations?"

I would suggest that a military Psy-Ops organization's list of available actions should include Lying. A military PR group interacting with the the sponsoring populace and governing body should not be allowed to lie.

The reason being that the military is civilian controlled. They don't get to set policy. Attempting to exert undue influence on policy makers is counter to the way the US gov. is intended to work.

One might suggest that the reality is not so rosy, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't strive to enforce ethical standards.

From back in the day, the number of times my 56k modem connected at faster than 44.1 kbps was, in round numbers, zero. Often not even that. So I'd suggest that the while the technical answer is "theoretically, perhaps" the actual answer is "no."

"...government cannot regulate anything effectively on behalf of EVERYONE."

Really? The government can't regulate ANYTHING? Highways, building codes, the electrical grid... all horrible failures that we'd be better off without?

NN could get screwed up, never underestimate human stupidity, but if we don't do anything you really think it'll be better? Shouldn't one oppose the bad thing, rather than the good thing that might go bad? Because any good action could go off the rails.

My understanding is that Tiny Tim's plot point is not that he is sickly and may die, but rather that he has to prepare (be prepared) for his manhood ritual and without appropriate instruction may die.

The translation involves some conceptual work, it's not just a word-for-word type of thing. The play was put up this year in Chicago and in Minneapolis. In previous years it has been in Minneapolis alone. The greater exposure in Chicago seems to have gotten it a lot more press.

My wife is involved with the theater company, but I have not seen the play.

Show of hands here - anyone think it's about to work? Hezbollah about to cave, tell Israel that they can do whatever they want?

The fact is that civilization is a fairly fragile thing. Once you've pissed someone off enough that they are willing to sacrifice themselves to get a little F-U there just isn't much you can do about it.

The only real alternative is to bring the dispossessed in, and get them invested in our civilization. This kind of selflessness is not generally encouraged by capitalism.
