Mod parent up! Why did the summary compare two API's (OpenCL and Direct Compute) to a physics engine. Also, wasn't there an article a little while back that announced Nvidia is porting physx to OpenCL?

Any why is AMD promoting Direct Compute as an open standard? Direct Compute is Microsoft's GP-GPU API (like CUDA and OpenCL) but is part of DirectX which does not run on MAC or Linux etc. AMD should promote OpenCL over Direct Compute for game and application use.

I don't believe the fragmentation of Linux into many Distros is a bad thing at all. No one is forcing each person to use a different distro, people pick what they want to use. Many now start off in Ubuntu and within a year or two could be ready to tackle Arch, Slackware or even Gentoo. But many will stick With Ubuntu because it has a strong user community and is simple to use.

Though I do have a big gripe with Linux: point distributions. If you don't want to move to the latest bells and whistle version that might be buggy or not install on certain hardware (9.10), then you are stuck with older versions of software in the repository. Ubuntu 9.04 only has Firefox 3.1 or something, there is a 3.5 but its a buggy half assed version that is called shrikoto (3.5 code name). What is so hard about becoming a rolling distro like Arch or Gentoo? In those distros as soon as new software is released you can immediately take advantage of it. You can emerge --update --deep world (Gentoo) or packman -Su (Arch) to bring your entire system up to date with all the latest. Why should I have to look for the latest version of Openoffice, Gimp or Eclipse somewhere else and hope there is a deb for my version?

I think you may have missed his point. From what he is saying, a white on black crime has larger repercussions for the defendant and greater media coverage than a black on white crime.

I live in NYC and have a perfect example of the two. I am sure the whole nation heard about the the latest Howard Beach incident where a young white man (Nick Minucci, aka Fat Nick) beat a young black man (Glenn Moore)with a bat. The incident unfolded as Minucci and friends were cruising around Howard Beach which is primarily an Italian American neighborhood. That saw Moore and a friend and decided to pull over and confront them as to why tey were walking around Howard Beach. During this time it was said that minucci used racial epitaphs and proceeded to beat Moore with a bat. During the trial the race card was pulled after Moore said Minucci called him a nigger. But Minucci claimed he used it casually and said "whats up nigga?". Now another fact was that Moore admitted he was there with friends to break into a car. The whole case turned into a media circus and of course the good Rev Al Sharpton was there to blast Minucci. Minucci was sentenced to 12 years for assult, robbery, hate crime and some others.

If you ask me what happened that night was simple, two groups of trouble makers both found trouble. There is no doubt in my mind that Minucci was motivated to stop those kids because they were blacks in a white negiborhood. And Moore and company were there to rob a vehicle. Howard Beach wants to think Minucci was some sort of hero protecting the neighborhood and the black community wants to think Moore was an innocent victim. Both of them are nothing more than common thugs.

The second incident which received little media attention was the story of Broderick J. Hehman. Hehman was a student at NYU who was robbed by four black teens who then chased him into 125th st where he was struck and killed by a car. The four black teens were initally going to be charged with hate crimes because a witness said they herd one of the teens shout "Get the white boy" as they chased him. The NYPD decided to drop those charges for reasons unknown but believed to be political. Here is the NY times article: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/04/10/nyregion/10harlem.html Even the good Rev Al Sharpton was nowhere to be found.

So as you can see god forbid a white person commits a hate crime against a black or a "minority". They will get dragged through the mud. That Howard Beach incident received nation wide coverage. But the story of Broderick J. Hehman recieved little media attention in NY and probably unheard of outside the Tri state area. It is as if racially motivated black on white crime is acceptable and tolerated because of political or other reasons. Bullshit if you ask me.

I have a few times. TF2 is best played on large gaming community servers like Doorman is God or No Heroes. I pay four bucks a month (No Heroes) and have some nice perks like not getting killed at the end of a round, immune to auto balance and swap teams as I see fit. We always are on the lookout for cheaters and so far I caught one who of course was just being a dick. His spray was gay pron as well as his steam icon and he was a sniper. So after spectating him for a bit it was obvious he was cheating and I type !callforhelp in chat and within a minute an admin was there and banned him.

Once me and my brother came across an interesting TF2 cheat program. A player was of course the sniper and getting one headshot after another. It was obvious he was cheating but when everyone tried to spectate him he suddenly wasn't getting all of those impossible head shots. So we determined his cheat alerted him when he was being watched or disabled itself. So I decided to leave my computer and go make a sandwich while I was spectating him. After about three minutes he wasn't hitting a damn thing so he quit and I wasn't hungry anymore. Never saw that hack again.

Shortly after Google Earth came out and was free so I nearly forgot about Keyhole.

Its funny, I just looked up keyhole to check some facts and lo and behold Google bought them out and turned it into Google Earth. So it looks like Keyhole/Google Earth has been around since 2001.

To me a big plus is the pad could be integrated into furniture to produce an invisible charger. If a desk sized charger mat could be retrofitted or simply stuck to the underside of an existing desk it would be convenient. You just lay the device on the desk and go about your business. It also cuts the need for having multiple chargers. My night stand has a charger for my phone and Ipod and they sometimes find their way to the floor behind the table. A single wire connected to a pad or mat that doesn't fall to the floor and can simultaneously charge a few devices without wires is a plus to me. And if that pad was integrated or could be fitted to the table it would be a nice and neat plus. I wouldn't hesitate to buy one of these chargers.

Duke 3D was open sourced under the GPL in 2003. A few ports were created, some adding 3D OpenGL acceleration for multiple operating systems. The best one I tried is JFDuke3D. Its author was supported by Ken Silverman who is the developer of the Build Engine which Duke3D was built on. I installed Duke 3D from my original CD under dos box and then copied the game files to a new directory and installed JFduke3D. Works great and gives you true 3D OpenGL rendering and mouse looking.

I don't see why anyone would say Duke3D is dead. I played it about 6 months ago and beat the whole game.
