Funny thing that. Now with the new news feeds...if I use anything other than the default, all the stupid apps I told it to block updates from for EVERYONE have come back. Great. Because now when I look at the "Work Friends" list I want to see a wall of this crap. It took me like 10 minutes to hide all the new things that showed up there. I wish they'd do what Google+ does and put it in a separate area so I can NEVER EVER GO THERE.
Stop using this argument. Now. This argument is fucking stupid (excuse my cursing but this irritates me). You apparently live in a different reality than the rest of us. Let's not even address the fact that most people have a choice between dial up or one provider (hell I'm not even sure I can get DSL and I live near one of the biggest cities in the country...Phoenix) and just look at the plain and simple fact that a choice between DSL or Cable internet is not a choice. This has been discussed so many times here it is ridiculous and I see this same dumb ass line parroted over and over again and it infuriates me. They have GOVERNMENT MANDATED MONOPOLIES. By DEFINITION you do not have a choice. It's a FUCKING MONOPOLY.
The free market works well in MOST situations but not every single one. For starters, this type of industry is nearly impossible to enter into unless you have billions of dollars to invest or you have government help. Guess what all the telcos had? Both (hah) but they got government help. You know what that means? That means WE own those lines. The telcos don't get to decide what we get to do with the lines that we paid for. This isn't the free market...sometimes you are trying to fit a square peg into a round hole.
Seriously though, why do people keep saying this? Is it this libertarian movement thing where people think that every single thing can be decided by the market? I really feel as if people that say this are honestly not even thinking about what they're saying and just repeating something they saw someone else say. I have to be honest...I'm definitely starting to see this a lot here. I feel strange not being a zealot to some cause sometimes...like is it that hard for some of you people to stand back and think harder on these situations? Are you so completely bound to your idealism that it like...warps reality? Some of the shit I see people say on here is honestly just brain dead. Really. They don't think about what they're saying or consider actual situations so much as they have a knee jerk reaction that suits whatever mantra they hold. It's irritating and quite frankly makes for shitty discussion. I mean there is a difference between my having a different opinion on a matter and someone just like...I don't know...not even paying attention to facts? It's like watching politicians debate. We get mad at them for this kind of retarded shit and then do it ourselves. Do you really think this or were you trying to score some free karma?
Who cares if they tell me I can't do it? I want my phone to access the internet...all of it. TELLING me I can't do something doesn't solve the problem of NOT BEING ABLE TO DO IT. That pisses me off. I don't even understand why they're blocking it...honestly. From a network management stand point, why would you block IRC? o_O
No kidding. Every time I see this what I really see is, "According to numbers I pulled out of my ass..." because that's all it is worth. No one gives a shit what some analyst thinks. No one. Go do something that matters...of course the ones that spend their time on useless shit like this probably never will.
You know, despite the fact that I am a huge nerd and buying most of my shit online, sometimes I still want to actually try a thing out. For instance, a tablet. I want one with a 10" screen to read comics on but I've always wanted to actually USE one and see how big a comic book would be. I'm sure 10" is good enough, but will I LIKE it? Who knows. At some point, I might actually be able to go down to a store and at least get a basic idea but trying one of the tablets out for myself. If I'm lucky, they might even have the one I want and I can play around with other stuff on it. You can never be sure how much you're going to like using a new device. All the specs in the world can't convey sluggishness...or when reviews say it's sluggish, you realize it isn't really that bad and the reviewer is a gigantic whinebag. So that's another thing too...see if it sucks but also see if it's actually not as bad as reviewers say.
Sometimes...I really hate reviewers. They over complicate everything because well...that's their job. Sometimes the difference between the expensive thing and the cheap thing is so minimal that a normal person (even a nerd) really isn't going to care. I have to sit back and realize that sometimes...I don't really care enough about the difference between the $150 good enough HP TN Panel LCD monitor that I bought and the $350 Samsung IPS panel my friend bought. Yeah his is better...but I once I've got mine, I realized I didn't give a shit because it still looks good enough.:p
Can Verizon still block my access to getting on IRC networks without me having to mess around with a bunch of different servers? I can't use the main Rizon server...I had to go find a specific one to log on to because half the ones I tried wouldn't work. If the answer is anything other than no, this argument doesn't matter. If someone is trying to tell me I can use AIM, GTalk, MSN, and Yahoo but not log onto IRC, I'd LOVE to hear why. It's pretty much accepted on most forums that Verizon is blocking for no apparent reason.
The only thing this would accomplish is increasing ridiculous lawsuits and making software more expensive. A bridge failing to bear a load and breaking? That KILLS people. Your weather widget freezing? Your OS blue screening? Honestly, not even remotely the same. I mean I get what you're saying...I just completely don't agree with it. This isn't a case of life or death like engineering a building. Your metaphor here kind of falls flat on that and it would, because there isn't anything comparable that is regulated this way, because it is completely unnecessary.
It seemed to be about security until he brought up the "damages" portion and then I pretty much don't care anymore. Even the security stuff is shaky, but to simply add the software not working properly into the mix? Lol. I don't think so. You know why we go to the extremes in this argument? Because it will happen. It always does. It's not something anyone pulled out of their ass...they're looking at history and current events. Does the patent system border on absurd right now to you? If your answer to that is yes, then you should be able to understand what I'm saying.
The FCC needs to grow some balls. I can't believe they put these rules through and harped about needing an open internet and then allowed the wireless providers to do whatever the hell they want. What PRECISELY will hurt your "new" wireless networks so much by not being able to block whatever you want? Precisely what? Bullshit. Complete and utter bullshit. I'm pretty sure the companies making 100's of millions of dollars like Verizon and AT&T are quite fine having to deal with the new rules. That any wireless company would claim their networks are new and just barely growing is absurd. That they would use that as an excuse to not have net neutrality is insane. I cannot understand why the FCC people would even give a shit unless they are in someone's pocket. Honestly, what a load of horseshit.
This whole notion here is ridiculous. It's software. We aren't talking a specific type of software like say...the software in the heart monitor at a hospital (the hospitals would have their own rules and contracts for that)...we are talking ALL software. That someone would even propose this is ridiculous. As others have said, it would kill Open Source software completely and subject even the simplest most retarded programs for lawsuit abuse. You're telling me that every piece of software ever made needs to be subject to this? Including the flaky weather widget I use on my Windows 7 desktop? Yeah, sometimes the damn thing gets stuck...should I be able to SUE someone for that? Are you serious? If the software sucks you have like a million different options of OTHER software. I can't think of a single thing I have ever done that there wasn't AT LEAST 2-3 different options for. Furthermore, if you are THAT concerned with the reliability and security you can pay someone to make you better software. Like seriously, we aren't talking about people's health here...we're talking about fart apps and Office software...who gives a fuck? Get a better one if you don't like the current one. You want to hold someone responsible for security? How about you hold the companies like Sony that lose our information and then wait a week to tell us. That's where your liability is at. I read the article and it's stupid. Honestly, it is just stupid. I'm pretty damn liberal myself but dear god, not every single thing needs the government to step in for you. Software is broken as fuck? Okay, issue a refund, I'm down with that. Pay for "damages" ? Um, no.
You know what I should do instead? I should get another fucking program and we should stop making more laws allowing people to use each other over bullshit. We have enough retarded lawsuits (please, go take a look at the topic about Samsung and Microsoft and the Apple lawsuits against Samsung). This borders on mental retardation. Great, you are proud of your software. Use that as a selling point and wear it as a badge of naivety. There is no piece of software that an idiot can't break somehow. That you would even suggest that makes me think you don't actually MAKE software or that you've never had someone use it. I cannot possibly convey how idiotic I think this article is.
Source? I've never EVER heard this before. You can't claim something like this where no one else in the entire comments of the article backs it up and not give us some kind of source.
Getting another browser is not a solution but it would be nice to see Firefox implement this behavior instead of just blacklisting the plugin altogether. Certainly a good idea. I wonder why you don't see this more often.
Which is why it is so painfully obvious why these religions are completely unnecessary and how they have absolutely nothing to do with morality. I get really tired hearing people basically claim that religion "invented" morality when it is merely a reflection of what people thought on morality at the time. It's ridiculous. Society would not be able to function if people didn't have their own updated morality to choose which things in the bible are "symbolic" and which should be followed and interpreted literally. All the people calling themselves Christians seem to follow it just a little bit differently and that quite frankly is evidence enough of how completely useless the religion actually is. If you can pick and choose what to follow then you don't need the book to begin with.
In short, I completely agree with you. Well made point.:)
This. I wonder if there's some sort of Flashblock-like extension to do this. I would certainly prefer it. Unfortunately we actually have a very very important Java applet at work here that I have no real choice but to use.
Honestly...if you're buying it used and the makers aren't getting the money, what is the point of even buying it at all? Serious question. You have literally the same effect by just pirating it. I haven't bought a used game in quite some time because of this realization...if I'm not paying the game makers then quite frankly...who even gives a shit if I "buy" the game? I'll buy used if it's grossly less to get it for a console only game, but otherwise they're relatively cheap when I go to buy games new since I've got myself a nice big backlog keeping me busy.:)
As a side note, I pretty much haven't pirated ANY games since I joined Steam and bought the Orange Box.
Every topic about Firefox...every single one...is FILLED with people whining about the versioning. We know. Everyone that has visited this website in the past 3-4 months knows. Shut up already. My friend, you don't know the half of it. Just to put it in perspective, I've almost broken a few motherboards in half trying to get the fucking RAM in the slot. Oh and playing with jumpers on hard drive and on the motherboard was always a pleasure. My god I don't miss that. Lol.
I'm pretty much just replying to your post so that I don't lose it later. Thanks for the fail2ban and OSSEC recommendations. I hadn't really thought about using anything like that but even my pitiful little server gets those break in attempts...not that there is anything particularly valuable on my server. Also Webmin/Virtualmin are VERY easy to install on Ubuntu. They are one of the distros on the support list and it couldn't be easier to do it. I specifically used Ubuntu Server over Arch Linux because of this simple fact. I just didn't want to have to dick it with it too much.

I would pay as much as someone normally pays for cable to get a steaming service that literally had everything. All movies and TV shows from all movie companies and networks. But that would never happen. Those greedy fucks just try and squeeze as much profit out of us as they possibly can. They were starting to get some of the pirates out of their shells to come pay for this stuff and then they fucked it all up when they got greedy with the Netflix streaming. Great job guys. Guess I'll just go back to what I usually do and they can fuck off.
I'm finding a lot of people here have a hard time with reading comprehension lately. Maybe I'm getting older and crankier about bullshit...I don't know, but I get tired of the half assed discussion I see from people sometimes. Read the fucking article. COMPREHEND WHAT IT SAYS. Apples and oranges are different things though they are both fruit.
I applaud your stance on DRM but I am annoyed by your laziness on reading about this particular subject. I came into this article probably knowing as much about this as you...nothing. It took me like 5 minutes to get up to speed. You and I both know you could have spent a little more time reading and a little less time complaining.
It's not that I'm picking on you, but I get tired of seeing rants going off half cocked like this. Some of the discussions on here are just ridiculous. I generally consider the discussion on this site much better than Digg or Reddit (less lol more informative) and it irritates me to see people pulling shit out of their asses in discussion here. Granted I'm not perfect but I'll still call you on your shit and would expect the same in return when I get a little overly excited about something.
You haven't addressed anything I've said. Nothing in that license text advises you to do anything other than distribute the source code with the program along with the license and possibly a notice saying it was modified. I don't consider those restrictions the same way you do apparently.
That isn't what this says at all. Nowhere did it say that Amazon was giving your books away for free. Did you even read the article? They're teaming up with libraries using a service they were already using and making it more convenient to use with the Kindle. That's it. They're giving free Kindle VERSIONS of books available through the over drive service.
Chill out. Seriously. I can't believe you produced such a huge rant on so little information.
The only restrictions on the GPL are restrictions on you (the developer) restricting what others can do with the software. If you take a GPL project and modify it then you'd damn well better GPL your program too. I don't find that restrictive and I frankly get tired of seeing this repeated over and over again on Slashdot. What copy restrictions are there? What redistribution restrictions are there? Are you pulling this out of your ass?
Here is what the GPL says you have to do. It says that if you take someone else's GPL code, you have to release your additions to it as GPL as well. It prevents you from using the code and then not giving you a way to modify and run it on the device that the code runs on (a nasty work around). It keeps the USER of the software free to do whatever they want with it. That's what the freedom is about. As a developer the only restriction is that you must keep your code GPL if you're going to redistribute the modified program. What's restrictive about that? The fact you can't just steal someone else's shit and close it back up again? I honestly don't understand what all this whining is about. This doesn't take away a user's freedom nor does it take much freedom away from a developer. The only restriction is that you can't take other people's shit without giving back. Tough shit. Anyone that can't abide by that is a freeloading asshole, if you ask me. If you don't want to GPL your code, then don't start with someone else's GPL code. I don't think that's very hard to do.
