  2. Better Microsoft than Facebook on Microsoft Buying Skype for $8.5B · · Score: 1

While it goes against the whole anti-Microsoft bent here, better them than Facebook. Microsoft buying Skype means I have to watch for changing terms of service, functionality and quality. Facebook buying Skype, on the other hand, would mean I have to clear my contact lists, replace my personal information with gibberish, uninstall Skype, burn my computer, and conduct ritual cleansing over the ashes.

Umm, a slightly slow watch would still be right twice a day, just not at the same time each day... Now, if the saying were 'a slightly slow watch may only correctly report 4:34pm once a decade', that is a bit more defendable.

Perhaps, rather, the religious are more likely to consider their life as a precious gift to be cherished as long as possible, whereas the non-religious would be more inclined to view their life as a random chance and is just as deservedly lost as gained. I personally believe in God, but that doesn't mean I want to die any earlier than I have to.

Of course, making giant sweeping statements about a *widely* varied population, most of whom aren't even the subject of the article, is just stupid.

I know religion bashing is a gimme for mod-points... but seriously, arrogance is no substitute for intelligence in discourse.

  7. Re:Moo on Schools Banning Homework? · · Score: 1

I agree whole-heartedly with your assessment. I specifically remember two classes in (Public) High School which were taught this way.

The first was a pre-calculus math course where the teacher would assign problems at the start of class and would demonstrate the lesson for the first 1/3 to 1/2 of the period and let the students work on the problems for the rest of the time. During the 'work' time he'd work through any problem with the students if they needed help. This also had the benefit of letting the 'smart kids' help out their classmates when they finished their own work early and honestly, I think I learned more in that class helping out other students than I did working on the assignments.

The other course was US History. The teacher would hand out assignments at the beginning of class and then lecture on the topic while writing down notes on the overhead. Because the lectures were straight from the book, you could work ahead without too much distraction if you found the pace too slow, while the 'slower kids' could still get the important information from both a visual and an auditory source.

What I guess it boils down to is that teachers need to provide the tools to allow students to move at the pace that is right for them. Too bad there is no standardized test for that.

Translation: "We had to set up satellites for international coverage when all we had planned expenses for was national coverage."

Seriously, try to do a little observation before making a smart-mouthed comment that you hope gets modded insightful.

The original plan was to sell contracts to US Airlines and get the intiall revenue flowing before expanding into international coverage. However, due to the failing commercial flight industry in America, Boeing was forced to move forward with their international plans without the steady income of American contracts.

I'll leave it up to your vivid imagination to figure out the economics of paying for the launch and maintanance of three satellites as opposed to one. I'm sure it will come out somewhere around $35/hour.
