So, I really don't see MMORPG's as being either better or worse than TV, Coffee, Cigarettes, or Boozahol.
Consider the stay at home parents who slavishly watch their five soap oprahs a day. Consider your own starbucks addiction, the $70+ dollars you drop on Latte's a week. Consider the guy who spends 3-8 hours a day in the bar after work. Consider the really smart kid in the back of the class room who's failing his classes because he reads all day instead of paying attention or doing his homework.
The problem is not the item, rather it is the combination of an addictive personality, and an intense desire to escape reality.
For those people who don't have an addictive personality, who don't feel a need to escape their own lives, WoW isn't dangerous. For those who do have these problems, its not a question of IF their lives will get ruined, but which thing they will use to ruin their lives.
So, the thing I find interesting is the apparent misrepresentation by Gamestop/EB games.
The PS3 launch is being limited to half a million units.
The Wii launch is going to be 4 million plus units.
The local gamestop store was allocated eight PS3s. They sold out in a day of pre-orders.
The same gamestop was allocated twelve Wiis, and sold out by 11 o'clock friday morning in pre-orders.
My problem is, since nintendo is putting eight times as many units on the market, why is gamestop only taking 12 pre-orders?
On looking into this, I'm seeing the same thing in all the Kansas City area Gamestops and EB Games stores. They all got 6-12 PS3's. They're all taking only 8-16 Wii preorders. So, basicly, they seem to be denying roughly 80% of the Wii units exist... I just wonder why.
So, That one guys top 20. Top twenty according to some single reviewer from a web site who went to TGS, not Top Twenty as voted on by a statisticly significant number of people.

Will the Wii Work?

So, which system is likely to have more enjoyable game play. The system with the new, innovative interface, or the system with the exact same interface as the two previous versions.
The system which will include well known characters in games with new settings and a totally new playstyle, or the system which will include 'new' character who are identical to the old character in 'new' games that play exactly like the last five installments.
And finally, which system will be more fun. The one that you can play immediately, or the one that has shown new extremes in the field of load time.
Besides, why buy a PS3 when you can get a Wii, 2 extra controllers, two games, and have a hundred plus dollars left.
So, I think the important things to remember are the following.
A> PS3 games will be the same as PS2 games, with two exceptions. The graphics will be smoother. The games apparently take ten times as long to load.
Final fantasy 13 will be FF 12 will be FF 14. Devil my cry 6 will be every bit as "good" as Devil may cry 3 and 4. Grand Theft Auto East St. Louis will play the same as Vice City. Only the graphics were changed, to get more hype.
B> Wii will have new, unique games. Mario will be mario, but New mario brother doesn't play the same Super Mario bros., or Super Mario 64, or Super Mario Sunshine. It will be Mario, but also new.
C> PS3 will have a short fall. You won't be able to get your $600 slow mobile for a month after it's initial release. Just like the Xbox 360. Wii will be easily available, you can go to the store at your convieniece and, Gasp of amazement, buy one without waiting all night. This isn't because people won't be buying a Wii, but because they (nintendo) will Actually MAKE enough for the demand level.
So, once again, Nintendo will sell, but look like it's doing poorly because it will lack the media attention for causing riots over short falls. Meanwhile, Wii games will be new and exciting, while PS3 games will be as new and inovative as graphical update of FF7.
Also, somewhat pertinant to this, Blu-Ray is the Betamax of High Definition DVD. So, look at the twelve movies available now, because the reprisent about 50% of all the movies you will ever be able to watch on the PS3.
So, this simply goes to the point that vat cloning beef muscle, not as part of an animal, is a good idea.
Whether of not one considers the treatment of farm animals as unethical, you have to admit that the cloned meat isn't unethical.
It removes the concept of meat from the concept of a living being that can be said to suffer.
So, As I understand it, a researcher has been able to grow beef muscle cells in vats of shark collogene.
The implications are astounding, in that it allows the creation of high quality beef in unlimited (more or less) quantities with only months or days of time invested, rather than years. Also, no killing animals.
As a proffesional chef, and a part time geek, The implications are staggering. Imagine, if you will, a beef tenderloin with no veins or silverskin, no EXCESS fat, grown to a specification. The heck with Prime Rib, my restaurant is going to offer 16-20 oz slices off a whole slow roasted tenderloin. A fillet mingion, for lack of a better term, that's 16 inches in diameter, and weighs 20 lbs.
Picture the tenderness of muscle that's never been used. It will make Kobe Beef and milk fed veal look tough and stingy by comparison.
In short, I'm looking forward to this with great anticipation, and a large bottle of barberque sauce.
