What about it? It's not as if it's any harder to buy games than it is to pirate them, at the moment. I don't see much of a reason not to make games open source. It would be cool to have a kind of "Magnatune" for games where you could pay as much as you think the autor deserved.
He doesn't dictate how you can market or sell your software. What he dictates is the rights you should pass on to the users of your program, the rights to pass it on to others and make it better.
Of course, these rights do make old fashioned selling of programs a little harder but he doesn't explicitly say you can't do that. Cedega is open source and you can even download the latest source from cvs but still transmeta is able to sell it.
Some people (like me) actually like reading about the updates in (open source) software. I don't think it would be a bad idea to include a software section into slashdot. And besides, we already spend all day reading the stuff here, don't we?;)
Funny. I chose linux for my tablet pc because windows didn't handle it any better. I'll admit that windows is better for playing some games but for playing games in general, linux isn't that bad either.
Even though many people choose windows for a reason, it's usually just being lazy or not knowing better, with not knowing being more common.
Does your boss understand that what he is asking is unethical and possibly illegal? If not, try to explain it to him. If he won't listen to you, you should probably start looking for another job.
So wouldn't it be reasonable for that small group of people to just change their working hours according to the season instead of making us all fiddle with our clocks?
Everything real-time would obviously suck but the most relevant stuff could be downlowded during the night onto a proxy server. Gaming could be done in lan. Wouldn't suck so much.
Bikes are nice but they are an option only for people who live relatively close to their working place. Weather can also be an issue. Here in Finland it can be a real pain cycling to work through half molten snow.
Also, trains can carry at least hundreds of people at the same time. Also, a crowd of hundreds of japanese riding their bikes to work would look funny:)
That's quite a lot of fud with not much to back it up with. True, IMNAA (I am not an american) but I'm inclined to think that those who are can have some influence on the next president of the USA or whatever they are voting over.
True, the significance of one vote is not much when there are many voters but it's pretty obvious how the ammount of power one vote wields goes up when the amount of voters goes down.
They could, in addition to printing the paper ballots, count the votes. That way it would be possible for people to see the votes being cast in almost real-time. I would like it. Of course, the official count would be done by hand.
But he doesn't necessarily have to be smarter than slashdot to do what he claims. Usually when someone posts something incorrect as a comment on slashdot it is either modded down or someone more knowledgeable will correct it. All the reader has to do is either skip the comments modded to 0 or 1 or read the correction. Not rocket science.
Even though people wouldn't pay for something it doesn't mean it doesn't have any value. I certainly wouldn't pay for my linux distro but it is of tremendous value to me, I use it for many things with it most people would pay money (in form of buying windows) to do. The fact that it's hard to attach an accurate monetary value to something doesn't mean it doesn't have any.
In theory, desktop pc:s could be alot more quiet than laptops since they generate less heat per cm^3 (have you seen a passively cooled laptop? I thought so). Desktop pc:s are usually so noisy because people tend to be cheap and buy the cheapest fans possible.
Sorry, I of course meant it's no harder to pirate games than it is to buy them :)
What about gaming?

Opening a closed but not locked door and entering a building without permission is still against the law. It is called breaking and entering.
But testing to see if the door is locked or not isn't.

Couldn't the domain-name-pimp just register "pimp" instead of "pimp.com" or something else. Would seem pretty pimp to me.
Or they could just use "mcdonalds"

He probably meant more gravity than the moon.
Shouldn't getting back to earth take less fuel as earth is on an orbit closer to the sun?
Yes but have you actually seen an android phone ad? I sure haven't.
True, lines of code is not a metric for performance. What lines of code is is a pretty good metric for the size of a project.
Well except you know, the savvy users who happend to stumble upon a bug or a missing feature. But that never happens in open source, does it?
3) You don't need to use fossil fuels in the first place.

Probably not, but even if he were, at least he wouldn't have been paying the heating bill. And he got extra light, of course.
Companies actually can an do customize their windows setups. Too bad they usually abuse that ability and just load them up with crapware.
