My dad works for school districts. He said back in the early 1990's teachers were furious that they were told they had to use this new fangled e-mail instead of network mail. All of the teachers were complaining about how complicated this new e-mail would be. They wanted their network mail. Finally, after some heavy pushing from the district, they submitted to this horribly complex e-mail. Now they obviously could never go back. Change can happen even when people don't want it to.

I think this is sorta right, however I think it more or less falls along the lines of apple dominates the MP3 player market and is using that to force out competition in the online music market.

The UN has lasted longer and has been a bit more active than the last two were, but it still is developing the "not my problem" mentality that allowed for Germany to arm the hell out of themselves before WWII and for all nations to do so before WWI. The UN is similar to it's predecessors in that it waste money on committees and threats of light economic punishment and appeasment that it will allow for a third world war (possibly with Iran though, so I guess that is different.). How can we trust them with ICANN. The Web is fine as is.

The Mac approach - simplicity and usability with the option for power use - wins out every time.
sorta reminds me of KDE vs. Gnome. Gnome is easier to use, but KDE has more features. I personally use KDE, as do many Linux users, but many also use Gnome, and several also use other side stuff like XFce, Fluxbox, and the like. You can't really say one is better than the other.

I would also say price has to be considered, OSX probably can do more than Vista, and it's easier to use, but most people dont want to pay that kind of price.

Well XFce WindowMaker, Fluxbox, Blackbox, IceWM FVWM, and many others already exist, so why reinvent the wheel? Fluxbox with the icon extention is more than simple enough to not intemadate a child. Just put an icon for each program and your good. I would say a good medium is to offer it as an option, or to offer alternative distos which could be installed via a flash drive.

When you boil it right down, anyone using one of the older versions of Windows (and I count 2000 in this, as MS doesn't support it anymore) is going to have to face up to the fact that technology advances, software changes, and no matter how much they love their old machine/OS, they're going to get left behind. Backwards compatibility leads to backwards thinking.
First off MS does support 2000 sorta. As I understand it, 2000 is an enterprise product. 95/98/ME are not. 2000 is in long term support meaning MS will release no more service packs or new features, but will provide security and maintenance for it until something like 2010, but updates will only be downloadable for people who have Windows 2000 SP4 Rollup 1 (a free update). I really think with IE7, that should be a security update, so I am a little upset especially since Win2K uses the same NT kernel as XP so it wouldn't take much effort.

I am upset that support for 9X has been dropped by Mozilla, as Windows 9x is no longer supported by MS, so that means that only 3rd party updates are available to users. This means that users of 9x will have only old browsers that are insecure and I think if I remember right, more people use 9x than Mac and Linux combined.

Sigh, obsoletance hurts. I am glad I use Linux. Sure various Linux distros stop being supported, but with comunity distros you can easily update, with commercial ones you usually get a discount on upgrades or you can simply switch distros.

Perhaps there were only a few problems for linux all along. Now that Firefox, Open Office, Gimp, Gaim, Thunderbird, and various media players work fine I don't know of any major issues. Wine picks up almost any slack left over. The only thing I have booted Windows for is to sync my Palm Pilot (which Linux could do if I originally set it up on Linux), to sync my TI-84, and to flash a new BIOS (which I have done once since buying this PC). I wish my school would use Linux since it would no doubt run faster on their old PCs.
