I am sticking with T-Mobile since they are the only ones not putting additional fees on my bill for this. I was seriously considering Sprint but quite frankly, the only thing T-Mobile doesn't have is coverage in rural areas like Sprint does with analog roam.
More minutes, cheaper, not nickle and dimed to death for features, and I don't have to pay just to play a stupid game on my cell phone.
I was hoping T-Mobile would give me like a free month for renewing my contract but they said neh so I said "well poo poo on you you" but I am sticking with them.
If you see it as a good / bad thing, then you miss the whole idea of slashdot or NEWS.
ALl that is being said is "Hey, they did this. Hey, they released that."
Its up to you monkleys and your wallets to decide if it matters. If that appleflix story gets your panties in a wad and you decide not to buy a new 20" iLamp, then go for it. If you are in a majority, the company will suffer and be forced to change its ways.
If everyone is cool or apathetic to it, then buy this new 1.8GHz G5!
I don't know about your market but here, in the SOHO market, over spending is going up. I can't tell you how many times I've lost bids because my price is too low.
Example - a small office wants a network. They want to share files and printers. They want a central location for files that can be backed up easily and taken off site. They have the PCs and will never have more then 5 at the site, currently they have 3 -- two with XP home and one with Windows 98.
My bid? $3000. This was cost of the cable, running, the router, a network storage device and a cdrw installed in one machine for the backups.
The winning bid? $12,000. Other bids? $15,000 and $22,000.
I know the 15k and 22k bids included some insane server setup situation. The 12k bid had a setup not far from mine... it definatly wasn't "better"... instead of a simple network storage device they used a whole server:(
First, I thought this was about that new Cuba Gooding Jr. Movie... but anyways, to stay somewhat off topic, but yet VERY NERDY ANYWAYS
Let us discuss something. As we were driving home from South Dakota a few weeks ago, we were in a place in Nebraska north of North Platte. NOTHING out there. We would put the radio on search on the FM band and get NOTHING. NOT A SINGLE FM STATION CAME IN. When we would click through, we still got NOTHING. On the lowest part of the FM we could kinda make out a classical station... again, in the 89.? range.
Then we switched over to AM and it was FLOODED with stations... but must sucked. Way to static to listen to. However, one station came in loud and clear. I stopped to listen because he was talking about weather and I wanted to know if we would drive into a storm. Problem: He was broadcasting from FORT WORTH TEXAS! Acording to streets and trips, we are looking at ~ 650 miles as the crow files! How the FUCK does that happen?
We also picked up a station from CINCINATI! That is ~ 880 miles away as the crow flies! Again, WTF?
Ive never gotten signals that strong. I should have written down their freq, but alas I forgot:(
I do remember as a kid laying in bed with the radio in my window, headphones on, slowly turning the nob on the AM stations and listening to faint signals. One station I could get pretty regularly was in Kansas City. When we moved I could faintly hear a station in Chicago... but it turned out to be a re-broadcast out of Lincoln. I also managed to pick up a station out of Oklahoma City.
If I am listening to a local AM station and lightning strikes or I go under a bridge, it cuts out... yet I get this. Can someone please `splain this to me.
In all seriousness, donate off those mofos for tax write offs.
I work for a non proffit in KS and would gladly get you the paperwork to get those things donated over. They might not work in the office but in the classroom, which is where I work, they work GREAT.
(ergo the selling problem -- too expensive for those that need it)
My Americorps job requires 38 hours a week and im actually working 42 with some more here and there. Its a 1700 commitment but its also a commitment to the site. I may, like others before me, work 2200 hours.
Right now my site is quiet. I have my laptop and an internet connection and im running off copies. Its time management skills like this that give me time for slashdot. This is not real free time.
Reading slashdot, ars, hard, etc. gives me an edge, albeit a small one, when im doing my other work.
Your wedding planning estimates are way off as well. You greatly over estimated.
The point of my post was look - Im busy. I know Im busy. But I made myself busy. No one FORCED me to work for Americorps. No one FORCED me to go to college. However, both have been goals of MINE. I have no one to complain to but myself when 6mo from now Im crazy because of time.
When I have a family and my wife is working 40+ hours in the hospital and im teaching every day from 7:30 to 4:00 but only on a 22k salary, if I got there then I did A B and C and had I chosen to say run off to mexico and live in the streets -- I would have much more free time.
Id rather have the option 100% UP TO ME THEN GIVE THIS CHOICE TO SOMEONE ELSE LIKE A GROUP (see story) OR MY BOSS OR THE GOVERNMENT.
Your creditors - you took the loan out in the first place.
Your family. You were an active participate in forming said family.
Yourself... is... yourself.
All three of these things fall squarely back to YOU. These bills that need to be paid came from YOU. My fiance's aunt and uncle have very little bills, just power, water, trash, and basic phone. They own their house since it was only a 90k home. They have 8 kids, one at Notre Dame. Only dad works and he makes less then 6 figures I can promise you.
And he still has plenty of time for scouts, the family, etc.
It still falls to you. The only person making you stay at your job is yourself. Maybe the consequences of your actions play a role in convincing you to stay, but it is still up to one and only one person...
20 Credit hours this semester, fall of my senior year in college.
I signed up for 1700+ hours for Americorps.
My fiance and I are planning a Spring 05 wedding.
I run a small IT consulting company.
Free time = 0
Rewards = Huge.
I have absolutely NO ONE to complain to but myself. If I want more time, I make more time. Same thing for everyone else. No one is making you work the job you are at. If you don't like the terms, renegotiate! If you don't like the job, quit. Not that simple because the cost of living is too high where you live? Move. Don't want to move because you like your nice house and nice cars and all that jazz? THEN KEEP WORKING.
No one is forced to work the coal mines 60 hours a week...
Farmers Insurance agents were given a free Dell with windows 2000 and Office XP. Many of my agents want to be able to use exchange with outlook and linux has yet to give me a workable clone of exchange that works with outlook.
Yes, Ive tried suse slox and ive tried the outlook connector -- but when an address book sorts by company and creates a bunch of blank entries for an entry with no company -- it does not work.
If someones could get on the ball in that arena, I would think a few more people would be switching over.
Ill be honest - even though Im about to get my BA, I took the req physical science, bio honors, chem honors in highschool - we really did glaze over how radio waves work.
IVe always found it facinating... and I have not the slightest clue.
If you have a good URL for basic this is how radio waves, work ie this is how TV works etc. -- that would be cool
When I say that Linux is more secure then windows, I see it on many levels.
For an end user its obvious since in windows you are always the admin (even in winxp where you can finally really change the power of the user, a lot of shit doesnt work right unless you are the admin). This basic security difference is HUGE.
Then there is the whole open source vs closed source security. I Truely beleive in that. It only makes sense that it is going to be more secure in the long term. This doesn't mean exploits don't exist - its just Im prone to beleive that there is someone using an unknown windows exploit as we speak to do something bad and it might be YEARS before that one is ever found (history backs me up on this one) but yet if there is something as blatent as the RPC exploit in OSS, we tend to see fixes for rather quickly (again history backs me up here).
Don't confuse the idea of inherint security with stupid users and sysadmins or even part time sys admins that aren't paid enough / don't work enough hours to keep a handful of servers updated across town.
Today I was filling up my car at Sams. Sitting by the gas pump were two little papers. One was the first page of a bank statement, with name, address, and account number. The second was a pay stub with a social security number and the place of employment. I looked in the trashcan next to the pump and aparently this woman had emptied out her car there at Sams and her important shit was on top.
Genuis. When you do stupid shit like that, expect identity theft.
In one of my many rants after I first saw this add and the URL, respectcopyrights -- I decided what they need is a respectconsumerrights.edu for educate those assholes.
Region encoding is just pure D bullshit. Add macrovision and DeCss to that would you? Then add the fact that I can't just buy a DVD player with DVI out so I can watch a high quality version. They don't treat me like a customer, they treat me like a criminal.
So, as long as the MPAA feels content to trample on me, I ill gladly trample on them!
I have to wonder what the FUCK they were thinking. We paid to get in the theatre, we obviously arent the audience they are going after (jackasses imho).
The part of the FUD I want cleared up and I would love to send the internet hound dogs on is: who is the guy in the video?
I first saw this before I watched Bad Boy II. I then saw it before American Pie 3. I looked up the movies he mentioned and I did not see a common crew member between them all. Either he is too low on the food chain to even make it to the credits (is that possible?) or my paranoia tells me he is a fake.
If he is real, some EFF people or some people with inteligence needs to let him know that its the MPAA shooting itself in the foot and that organization that will be putting him out of work. Hell, he should be more worried about Pixar, because they don't need a set painter like him:)
Part 1: When Microsoft's Bill Gates claimed recently that Microsoft IP had made its way into open source apps, I laughed -- a lot. Its so stupid, all one has to do is LOOK and Microsoft could very quickly and easily prove that their IP was used.
Is it just me or doesn't it make more sense to have everything open? If everything was open sourced you relied on your patents to cover things, you would never have to worry about IP theft because as soon as someone did it, you would know about it, and you could quickly and easily take them to court.
Im working on installing a sprinkler system and I was told that Hunter makes really good sprinkler heads and that as soon as the patent ran out, rainbird copied the design and had a model out the next season hot and ready to go. This is how competition is suposed to work. Rainbird didn't get sued by Hunter under the SMCA (S is for Sprinkler) or some shit!
Part 2: However, with that said, I don't know if I like this "maybe its being done, so lets post a story on slashdot." Im sure there are a fair number of geeks that see this, dont have time to scope the comments and notes about how the inconsistancies are easily explained away, and will now look at linksys in a negative light.
The whole point of open source is to share that code and put it to use! If companies are going to have to deal with defending their use of open source, a time might come when they just don't want to use it anymore, lock it all down, and sue hackers like this under the DMCA.
Yes, it needs to be made clear that GPL violations are not going on but Im willing here to give linksys the benefit of the doubt and time.
So you are the idiot that is putting shit like Three's Company on DVD.
Im glad I saw this article now! I went ahead and dropped my Unix class next spring. Thank God!
Ill go ahead and take a win2k3 server class instead.
If you see it as a good / bad thing, then you miss the whole idea of slashdot or NEWS.

Which brings me to my question of WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU PUT THIS ON EBAY?
If you stand to make 9mil, could you at least host it yourself? FFS!
I don't know about your market but here, in the SOHO market, over spending is going up. I can't tell you how many times I've lost bids because my price is too low.

Fire does all of that
I want to replace the server and not the clients
:(
the clients are stuck in windows for another craptastic reason -- a web based system that has bad html that only works in IE
