  1. Dear Mother of Jerk: on Halo 3 To Have 'Mute the Jerk' Button · · Score: 1

Dear Mother of Jerk, We here at Bungie are proud of the role we play in the evolution of on-line gaming. As we should. But enough about us and onto the reason for this letter. It has come to our attention that you are raising a 'jerk' in your household. So please accept this complementay bar of Bungie soap from us and the rest of the on-line community. We also want to express our sincere hope you will start to bring your A-game to parenting. MasterChief

  2. Jobs are like Girlfriends on Can You Be Sued for Quitting? · · Score: 1

Most girls can handle 'the stars not being alingned', or 'it wasn't meant to be', or even 'I don't know -I'm just not happy anymore'. But when she hears you are leaving her for her hot little friend, you just might find out if this girl has any repressed phychotic genes. It's like you are waving other girl's panties in the air as you breakup with girlfriend. If you think your firm will get jealous then tell them that you are just going to work for your parents small business or something.

  3. Everything is a negotiation on Dealing w/ Relocation Package Bait and Switch? · · Score: 1

I work on the flip side of this situation writing up and delivering offers - not R&D but a hospital, and the situation is usually much simpler than these 'master evil plan' theories are suggesting. If numbers are different revert back to 'intent'. Was the intent of the verbal offer- to cover the cost of your move or move + bonus? Most companies truly want to cover your actual costs - really! Try to open the negotiation back up and ask that they commit to reimbursing you for your receipts (or actual costs).

  4. Wait, I'm an Engineer & MBA on Which Grad Students Cheat the Most? · · Score: 1

while reading this post I thought that while there may be more cheating in these majors, I've always thought that they were the more difficult on the college menu (I know not everyone will agree with that). My point is that pressure/work-load and cheating will always be correlated even outside academia- like baseball or cycling. As someone who has gotten behind on homework and had someone else sign the attendance sheet, I've made myself look hard at the ethics. I personally feel that it is worse to cheat yourself, i.e. not learn - kinda the whole point of school. So I felt it ok to cheat on homework, which could be argued a more efficient way to learn; however there is no learning involved in taking a test. Cheating on tests cheats your classmates, school and yourself -but the silver lining is that it doesn't really hinder gainful employment (as I do know some 'Real' cheaters who are doing just fine).

  5. Re:A more suitable punishment... on Virginia Spammers Go To Jail, And Pay For It · · Score: 2, Funny

I would like to know the name of these clowns and address of the correctional facility they are at so I could post it for /.ers. My idea of a more suitable punishment includes receiving 30-40 postcards a day while in jail. On the postcards we could attempt to sell useful products like 'eyes for the back of your head", soap on a rope, removable tatoos of tits, and of course 'Prison Spam' which has grill marks that look like bars.

still working on collecting more data but I think there is something here... The earth is getting warmer and with the baby boomers, there are a record number of old people. My grandparents always had the thermostat set on 'inferno'. Hmmmmm

  8. Another annoying freedom on Hardware Hacking a Voting Machine in 4 Minutes · · Score: 1

Just like the freedom of speech (which brings with it the tolerance of things you hate) the freedom to vote brings the acceptance of an imperfect system. Every useful tool can be used destructively. Don't blame the box, chads, or whatever - by the time you can guarantee a totally fair election there will be no need to vote. How we vote is a simply a reflection of our society. So, you can hack a voting machine...

  10. Not Phishing on AT&T Crack Part of a Phishing Operation · · Score: 1

Phishing is the attempt to lure someone into a trap/trick with unsophisticated bait. This goes beyond using a worm... this is more like a using a Fembot or one of those peal-off faces in MI2. Anyone that is armed with customer records, credit card info, and a penchant for buggary will do fairly well even if the public is aware of phishing.

  11. Human Limitations on HD-DVD and Blu-Ray Disappointing So Far · · Score: 3, Interesting

The limits of humans' ability to perceive sensor information is fixed and while the DVD isn't perfect, the lackluster response of the HD-DVD & Blu-Ray in the marketplace is an indication that diminishing returns for entertainment-based technology are here. I think underpinning this issue is an unexcited general public that has been underwhelmed by the quality of recent movies. If a movie is crap, then seeing it in HD might allow you to say "I think he ate corn"

  12. Let me get this straight? on FBI Data Mining Students' Financial Aid Records · · Score: 5, Interesting

I was under the impression that the FBI/CIA/Homeland Security wanted to track the flow of money back to terrorists. And they are looking at the financial records of students who aren't financially supported i.e the ones who have applied for a loan????

  13. Re:When they demoted Pulto on Pluto Making a Comeback · · Score: 1

I completely agree - change isn't easy for most people - the path of least resistance seems to be the blend of the day. You just sighted examples where the masses were pissed off but finally gave in... round planet, evolution etc. There are a few other battlegrounds where dumb has won. When you look at the composition of an atom everyone agrees that electrons are negatively charged, however when you get a whole bunch of electrons together to power your toaster we are ok with labeling this with a "+". Similarly with temperature, we have 4 different scales, (Celsius, Fahrenheit, Rankine and Kelvin), two of them contain the concept of negative temperature, which implies negative energy, which doesn't exist. Guess which two are the most widely used in society? I think in the battle of dumb vs. not-dumb, dumb has an inertial advantage of decades of elementary school anograms - and for the not-dumb camp to win they need a salesperson like Paris Hilton, J-Lo, or SideShow Bob. Seriously, can anyone really be persuaded by these voting geeks? Advantage: dumb
