Companies, especially financial but also any company being "risk-evaluated" need to be able to "continue normal operation" in max. 24-hours, if they can't they risk-evaluation will drop and then they will be devalued, which technically means that their worth will drop. For an A+ or A rated company such devaluation is catastrophic because loan are based on this rating and will need to be paid immediately. That means effectively that any piece of mission critical software or hardware need to either be replaced or fixed in under 24-hours.
YES, I do work in IT in a financial company with "triple A" rating. (and btw. there are not so many of that kind companies left after the financial crisis)...
What slows Windows down are not the updates. You can have a Windows server running for years, installing updates and never slowing down.
You user profile is what is slowing your Windows down (the content of c:\users\%USERNAME%), and NO you can't just delete it... try to login with a new user and you'll see.
It has been like that since Win95 and Microsoft has never fixed this.
...is a custom built MacBook Pro 15" Retina and it is running Linux OpenSuSE 13.2.
I used ThinkPad before but the quality has dropped to an unacceptable level (imho).
...I have an iPhone 4s (just because I don't want that "post Jobs shit"), my wife has an iPhone 5s (we are both IT profs) and we just rarely NEED to reboot our phones. We choose Apple because "it just works", we don't have the time for fiddling with a phone when we have users running on Windows 7. Yes, things got worse after Jobs because Jobs was the man guaranteeing that things were ready BEFORE they shipped but they are still quite good.
Normal film has been used fo decades and work quite well... and has the fantastic advantage of just looking at it and seeing what is on it and how it is ment to be used.
None of the hanky panky übercool digital solutions has a solution for your problem... but the good old Super8 does.
The digtal world has miserably failed the long time archiving problem.
"In general, water-cooled PCs are NOT quiet. There still must be high-volume air flow through the radiator, and in most cases that means: big fans."
You can drop the radiator with fan design and have are quite large ribbed aluminum tank instead, hot water gets in at top and you get room temp water out from the bottom. There has been at least one commercial implementation of this solution with a very nice looking tank.
...that computers wouldn't survive the apocalypse ?
Depending of the cause of the apocalypse many computers could survive it and nerds would be needed to use them.
Quite bad argumentation, this is waste especially in outdoor lightning and in indoor lightning you are not using the heat efficiently.
Change to low power light sources and use the spare energy on efficient heating, you will save power and money even in Wisconsin.
"The EU is going to be thrilled that Microsoft's phone division is going to be based out of Finland for years to come. Likely this helps EU/Microsoft relations. "
After PRISM ? That would be like saying "YES" to uncle Sam having an official approval to spy thru Nokia manufactured phones and not being able to do anything about it. They may however use just that against uncle Sam and the merger.
Nobody in Finland (or in EU) is happy about this merger, the money are just a small compensation... but ideally they rather would keep Nokia where it was, without Microsoft... and without Elop, that was quite clear when the chairman spoke.
...Nokia is neither sold nor bought YET! They are missing both approval of the share owners and from the EU, US and probably also from the Finnish government.
For Nokia Android would not be a race to the bottom because Nokia IS already on the bottom... if you do not earn anything then anything that would raise your earnings is a better solution even if it is Android.
This, if proven true, may in fact sabotage the Microsoft - Nokia merger plan...
I surely hope that most of Nokias shareholders will say "Thanks, but no thanks" to Microsoft and get Elop fired.
...that will be Microsoft's problem.
They will have to either sell Win7 (or 8) to greatly reduced price or see 1 billion "customers" change either to Linux or ReactOS.
Last I've checked almost all consultants that comes to us has changed their PC Laptops to Apple Laptops... this has happened in the exact same 5 quarters Gartner is reporting about. I am NOT talking about management consultants or other non-tech consultants, I'm talking about hardcore IT people.
Only on /. oldfags call each other newbies... :-)
...btw. I've been here since late 90'ties... and I am 50, do I qualify as oldfag ?
...need Oculus Rift for ?
Give me some real world applications and not just games and porn.
Yes it is, has played it on my PentiumPro in 1999 or 2000.
"It is done by designing the systems to be fault tolerant." Yes I agree... now go tell it to the developers and to the management.

Until some dickhead looks at the movie, discovers a girl flashing her tits 'just for the camera' and deletes the film...

If it really is a 386 it has an IDE/ATA interface.

Systemd: the PulseAudio of init systems
Is this a good thing or a bad thing ?

...at least upgrade her to Windows 7.
Better performance, more secure, still supported.
Btw. people are far better in handling/learning new things than they think they are... I've upgraded my father (80+) to OpenSuSE without any problems.
