By excluding such a population from your bargaining unit, you've likely significantly lowered your insurance premiums. This saves both employees and employer money and leads to more governmental efficiency in a time when revenues in state and local governments are definitely hurting.

That argument is lacking in logic. Oregon has no Sales tax. Washington has no personal income tax. Neither have a personal property tax. Different states have different taxes. By your logic, it seems that everybody should be able to live and work in Washington via an employer's fake subsidiary location and a PO Box for you and buy in Oregon to avoid the Washington sales tax. If Washington can manage without a personal income tax, you see no reason why Oregon can't. If Oregon can go without a Sales tax, you see no reason Washington can't.

"Completely useless" is a bit of an overstatement. It can help by bringing new people to the plate. Realize a vast majority of the world is completely shackled to non-free and downright evil software. If we can give them a taste of what "free" software can do and slowly migrate them from completely closed software, then shouldn't we be happier than we were? It may not be ideal, but it's better than nothing.

Dude, I bet you can't find an "old" laptop with "a few ghz" worth of CPU power, a gig of RAM, and a 128MB worth of video RAM for less than $200. Tack on a $150 (!!) tuner card (that is PCMCIA or USB 2.0, not PCI) and at least $50 worth of wireless accessories and you're definitely over your two-hundred-dollar mark.
No, really, I agree whole heartedly. Opposites attract and for good reason. However, sharing interests can make life interesting, too... just because she has the same job doesn't mean she has the same interests. Or even skills.

Please read up on what, exactly, deus ex machina is. It is a literary term, describing the way gods would be lowered on to stage with a mechane (machine) to solve otherwise unsolvable problems that came up during the play. Because the "gods" would come from the "machine," the term "deus ex machina" was used - meaning, literally, god from the machine.
People using the term to describe Google sound like people who overheard the term once, had no idea what it meant, so they translated it and decided to take a literal meaning to the thing. I'm reminded of people using the term "body of crime" incorrectly (once even on CSI... *sigh*).
