  1. Email address on Tales From the Support Crypt · · Score: 4, Funny

My favorite call from when I used to do tech support involved a bounced email. The caller kept trying to send an email to her minister, but it kept bouncing back as undeliverable.

She thought it had something to do with the church secretary who apparently hated her and might be interfering. She spent about half-an-hour explaining this to me without giving me a chance to get a word in edgewise.

When I was finally given a chance to ask her a question, I asked what email address she was trying to send to. She told me and I said "try it without the 'www.' at the beginning."

  6. Better computers? on GPUs To Power Supercomputing's Next Revolution · · Score: 1

Folding@Home launched a GPU beta last month that is now publishing data putting donated GPU performance at 20-40 times the efficiency of donated CPU performance.

Obviously some of that is due to GPUs being better than general-purpose CPUs at this sort of math, but how much is also due to the fact that the people who are willing to run a Beta version of Folding@Home on their GPU tend to be the sort of people who would have much better computers overall than those who are merely running the project on their CPUs?

I think you read a summary from a different article, since this one doesn't imply surprise on the part of the scientists at all. But I'll still try to answer your question: The biological cause (e.g. an abnormality in the brain stem) is being contrasted here with a statistical correlation (e.g. lying babies on their back seems to reduce SIDS, but we don't really know why) as opposed to being contrasted with a mystical cause (e.g. magical unicorns that, despite being pretty cute, are incredibly vicious and deadly).

  13. Make on Domain Names Worth Their Weight in Gold Again · · Score: 1

I'm working from memory so I may have some of the details wrong:

There was an article in Make magazine a few months ago about domain names (I believe it was written by Tim O'Reilly). Basically, it said (paraphrased), "If we were registering a domain name for this magazine a few years ago, we would have needed to get make.com to get any visitors. However, given the ubiquity of search engines now, makezine.com is fine . . . people will still find us with no problem."

So, um, what I'm saying is, domain names aren't as important as people think they are.

Although the first computers I used were the Apple IIEs at my elementary school and my friends' Commodore 64s, the first computer my parents bought for the family was a 286 machine from VTech when I was in grade 4. The 286 had PC GEOS installed, which was actually not bad as an alternative to Windows 3.1, compatibility issues aside. The first computer I bought myself (when I was 16) was a 166MHz/16MB machine running Windows 95. It took me many hours working at a fast-food joint to pay my parents back the ~$1500 I borrowed to buy it. When I went away to university, I gave that computer to my parents who upgraded the memory on it and used it for a few more years.

  22. Re:Speak for yourself, John Alden. on Librarian Stands up to the Feds · · Score: 1

I don't think fighting disease and crime are mutually exclusive endeavors, so I'm not convinced that the comparison is relevant. I mean, sure diseases kill more people and should therefore be addressed aggressively, but that doesn't say anything about terrorism. (I realize that both endeavors are sort of correlated because they get their funding from the same pool of tax dollars, but I doubt disease prevention would automatically get the counter-terrorism funds if counter-terrorism programs were canceled).

And the "we don't have time to get a warrant" excuse doesn't apply since the FISA warrants are retroactive for 72 hours. e.g. The NSA can start taping someone's calls now and as long as they get a warrant within the next three days, everyone's happy.

  24. Memory versus Hard drive / A bunch of other things on What Should People Understand About Computers? · · Score: 1

I think the first thing everyone should be taught is that memory is not the same as hard disk space. My mom once received an insufficient-memory error in an application. . . so she began uninstalling programs and deleting her old emails.

Also, I notice that some people have no idea how email works. Someone once tried to send my mom a file that was too big for her ISP mail account (so it was bounced back to the sender). . . my mom's solution was to delete old emails in Outlook to make more space. I once knew someone who refused to reboot their computer, because Outlook wouldn't be able to receive their messages while it wasn't running and she didn't want to miss any.

And someone should explain to the world what cookies are. A lot of people seem to believe that every cookie is a malicious spying tool.

    Wow. . . I'm a grumpy old man.
