This is not a big deal. In fact this was a good thing. Before, they had some poor secretary who had to sit there getting a vague idea of what the emails were about. Let's face it, they almost NEVER made it's way up to the top anyway.
Now with the new system they can have some DBA write script to pump out statistics on what kind of feedback/problems/etc most people are writing about. They can actually get a real number and say "we got 10,000 emails this week and 67% of them disagreed with such and such policy." Plus, they can weed out the junk mail. Can you imagine how much spam he must've gotten. Do you think the Pres was using SpamAssassin?
Most places use a box from Nice to do call recording. It's neat. You can pick up the phone, dial an extension and listen to anyone's conversation live. You can also listen to them over the network on your computer live. They also make other nifty things like the cdfs 5000.
There's also new firmware out today (mac only, windows version is due out in a week or two).
For those to lazy to click on the link, here's the info:
The iPod Software 1.3 Update provides iTunes 4 support, including playback of AAC encoded audio files (Mac-only). Additional enhancements include audio playback and user interface improvements, increased playback time on scroll-wheel iPods, and longer stand-by time for all iPods.
Re-inventing the wheel

An IMDb for Books

· Score: 3, Insightful
The basic problem is that there was no online database for movies before imdb.
But these people are re-inventing the wheel. There are tons of people who have much more experience with this stuff, who've spent years getting masters degrees in library science. These people have spent a lot more time trying to figure out out to categorize books already.
Plus, there are already numberous search tools available, like the loc and Amazon.
Sony's technology divisions (PSX, DVD players, etc.) account for a much larger portion of their earnings than their content (mainly sony music).
It would seem to me that the only solution Sony would be interested in would be one that does not impact on their profits. If they were to install some kind of DRM into (for example) TV's that wouldnt let you skip commercials, they would be (rightly so) worried that people would start buying other brands.
No... but how about an iPod with a color screen that has 802.11.. Not for net access per se. But lets you're listening to a CD and want to check out the liner notes... download them, and there you go.
Obviously, you didn't read the article, which essenciallly addresses all of the problems you just brought it.
Is it original (plot wise)? Not entirly, but no one else had put those combinations of things together before. And is any art entirely original, or is it a re-interpretation of someone else ideas.
Were the effects original and can they be out-done? Yes. No one had ever done things like that before, which is why everyone tried to rip it off. They claim to have done amazing new things which will be impossible for people without huge budgets to rip off.
I know... there's already 600 comments on here, and no one is going to read this. BUT. I have spent a better part of the workday trying to play this game. I'm sure I'm not the only one who was a 13 year old kid at the time and has wanted to play it ever since. Hopefully someone will come back and read this and it will help them play the game.
The rom is available online. I'm not going to help you. Use google, you'll find it.
Once you do, use FCE Ultra, it seems to be the only emulator that is capable of dealing with this ROM.
I'd have to agree here. Those things are horrible. Just horrible. ROB if you are reading this GET NEW SOCKS! Black. Blue. Something with a nice pattern. Anything.
I'n posting this too late to get seen... but anyway:
Have you tried searching off line? There was a time when people were able to find jobs without using the internet. People even found programming jobs BEFORE the internet existed. *gasp*
You need to be agressive. Call up companies that you'd like to work for, find the person in charge of the tech department, get them on the phone and sell yourself.
Physically walk into companies, and start talking to people who work there.
Go to networking events in your area. All over there are user groups, places where geeks, and people in charge of geeks converge. Find those places and bring your resume along.
If you're in college start going to alumni association meetings in your area and networking with people.
Call up head hunters.
There's more to finding a job than search on Hotjobs, Dice and Monster.
While I like Tivo, if they fail or not is really not a big thing. Companies fail all the time, even ones we think (or we thought) would be really cool. Think transmeta, or Segway.
The problem is who controls the content? Will cable companies remove features, like the ability to skip ahead 30 which they feels gives users the ability to skip commercials? Probably. Given the choice between pleasing consumers, or pleasing advertisers and shareholders (which they're leagally bound to do!) the companies always stay with the advertisers.
A Game of Thrones is the first book in the Song of Fire and Ice Series by George R.R. Martin. It's easily one of the best fantasy series written recently, and probably right up there with Tolkien. It's easy better than Robert Jordan's work.
Honestly, it's fantastic if you're looking for some great fantasy reading this summer.
I agree, it would be GREAT if they put some of ImageReady's features into PhotoShop... but since they haven't, I'll still use IR. I think the way it handles saving as jpg, and slices (including optimization) is still much better than PS.
The seat warmer part is really weird. When I was in Japan I used one and it always felt as if some really huge guy had been sitting on it for two hours just before I got there.
For those that dont feel like actually looking through apples site for the article, here's a direct link to the PDF version of Integrating Mac OS X with Active Directory [apple.com]
The one thing I'd really like to see, aside from not having to pay for the TV listings monthy (or lifetime subscribtion for those big spenders out there), is to be able to download the TV listings weekly over the internet, rather than having to connect it to a phone line.
Not to mention have it download software updates via the internet as well.
If making money was all that mattered to you, you should've joined a corporation.
But that's the point! Most universities are corporations these days. And most of the people in the administration not only treat it that way, but are under serious amounts of pressuer to make a school profitable.
Universities have huge amounts of people who sit in front of spread sheets all day trying to figure out how much money the university has, how much it can make this year and how much it projects to make next year - and none of these people have anything to do whatsoever with learning!
By far, the ultimate gift to us from God, was Jesus, our Saviour
Maybe in your opinion. Some of us don't believe in god, or even in organized religion of any kind. In fact, some of us think of religion as nothing more than ritualized ancestor worship.
First, there are too many corporations using NAT, and it's impossible to know how many people are NAT'ed. A company may have 100 employees, but only have 3 static IPs.
Second, there are man servers which have a ton of virtual hosts on them, each with their own IP. A server could have 20 or 30 or more IP's assigned to it, there's no way to know. Furthermore, a server could have multiple NIC's, assiging different virtual hosts to different NIC's, making it even harder to figure out.
No kidding. I got my first mag stripe reader from them at the MIT swap fest years ago. Oh well. We all have day jobs now.

They even play in webpages now:

Damn right. Read Down and out in Paris and London by George Orwell. One of the best books I've read in a long time.

There is no sig.
A quick search on Google picks up a number of places that rank movies according with grosses adjusted for inflation:
Boxofficemojo.com
Boxofficereport.com

That would be awesome! Can you imagine being able to plug a firewire hd into your tivo and bring the simpsons whereever you wanted to?
:)
I'm sure they'd have some serious legal issues to deal with, though.
But then again, since simpsons are already out on dvd maybe it's only useful for Iron Chef.
