Because even one extra SKU at retail is a bitch to work with compared to just shipping USB2 with everything. Think about it:
4 colors of iPod Mini in two sizes (4&6GB): 8 SKUs 4 colors of iPod Mini in two sizes (4&6GB) with USB/FW option: 16 SKUs.
All of this includes subtle changes to packaging, manufacturing, and support. IT's far nicer for Apple to say "Here's USB. If you like Firewire go buy a cable for it, after all, it'll still work"
You can't really point at the defacto standard, that people know and love, and scream "proprietary, proprietary!" Proprietary it may be, but it's a convoluted and diluted message that that will just confuse consumers.
Example A: Microsoft Internet Explorer vs web standards.
Lots of people will bitch and moan that IE doesn't support the W3C standards to the letter and then say that IE is using propreitary ActiveX technology. However, with 90% of the browser market aren't they now the de-facto standard around the world just as a matter of their dominance?
I absolutely agree. Linux developers/companies/etc need to unify on some standards (good luck) or they'll never be accepted.
A new user moving from Windows shouldn't have to know (or care) if they use KDE/Gnome/Fluxbox/etc or 2.4.x/2.6.x. They should just be able to use a machine and be done with it.
Good luck getting support, though. How many times you think people will get a reasonable response when grandma calls Earthlink support to get help and, after telling them that she has LiiNucks, getting the standard answer "sorry, we don't support that, you'll have to edit the conf files yourself"
Why don't the companies support Linux? because 1) not enough people use it to justify support and 2) what should they train their TS guys on? Gentoo? Red Hat? Mandrake? KDE? *?
This community needs to get its damn act together if it's ever going to be taken seriously and move beyond the realm of geeks on the desktop.
- A linux liveCD without any X server installed whatsoever - DSL doesn't count, since it has to hack a bunch of things up to work within 50MB - If possible, i'd like it to be debian-based
Any ideas?
I've tried re-mastering Knoppix over and over but it seems like the minute I uninstall KDE/X the whole system craps out.
Now the 17-inch PowerBook G4 is equipped with Apple's Sudden Motion Sensor to protect your most valuable asset: your data. The Sudden Motion Sensor senses change in axis position and accelerated movement. In the event of a drop or fall, the Sudden Motion Sensor instantly parks the hard drive heads so they won't scratch the disks on impact, lessening the risk of damage and improving your chances of retrieving valuable data. When the Sudden Motion Sensor senses your PowerBook is once again level, it unlocks the hard drive heads automatically.
Will Google now become the default search engine on FireFox? So, if you enter a faulty URL, then suddenly, the Google web page appears and presents you with alternative Web links?
I'd be OK with that....make it the default (as it is in the search bar right now) and just allow people to change it with config settings at their leisure. works for me.
As an amendment to the bill, they should make sure that manufacturers of hammers take "due care" to make sure that their products can't be used to smash windows, or to be turned against other humans.
Finally, an impartial review of Windows vs. Linux. I have no doubt that at the end of this article the Microsoft engineers will recommend the clearly superior Linux OS over Windows Server 2003.
I know how silly it is to expect people to actually read the articles around here, but:
Sources familiar with the product cautioned that the low-end Mac will be marketed towards a totally different audience than those who traditionally buy even a $799 eMac. "This product is not going to be about performance," said a source close to Apple. "This is going to be the basics, but with just as much of a focus on software as any Mac could ever be."
Entry-level Computer: The new MyMac (or whatever) Workstation for Pros: The PowerMac G5
I don't see how hard it is to realize that they have two vastly different target markets that don't overlap that much; some people will want the experience of using Apple Mail and Safari while others need 8GB of RAM for Photoshop.
See it before it goes away!

I just don't see what a steamy celestial body like Venus could ever see in a big old fat bag of gas like Jupiter.
However, I've heard from this Soviet chick, Venera, that Venus is just crushing when it comes to the pressure that she exerts on anybody that even tries to get near her. Sure it's nice and hot the closer you get to the surface but, eventually, you just get squashed and she barely even notices.
Fuck.
Also interesting to note that Tiger ships on a DVD now. Is this the first mainstream OS to ship on DVD ever?
and this is different from regular IRC how?
Yea! Once a developer releases a fast application they should NEVER patch or add features to it!
Damnit, it's fast now, why do they need to add "features"??!?!
So, in closing, MySQL should have never gone beyond v1.0 because it was fast and that's all that ever matters!
Even better than that:
1) Download your shows using Bittorrent, by monitoring TV Torrent groups that have RSS feeds automagically.
2) Mod an Xbox
3) Use said X-Box with X-Box Media Center to play back your shows in pristine quality.
Who needs TV?
Interesting side note too: If you check the code for Apple's web pages, the CSS class for all of their tiny-text legal phrases is named "sosumi".
:)
Check it out: www.apple.com -> view source -> search for "sosumi"

Wow. On my 21st birthday I get free Ice Cream just for sharing a birthday with Yahoo.
:p
Life truly is wonderful.

it's as though 300,000 people cried out and were suddently silenced ...
and then somebody diffed the change and made them speak again
Reminds me of an old Family Guy scene (roughly copied here):
Peter: Why, my great, great grandfather was one of the first people to own a phone!
----flashback showing black and white version of peter with a beard in 18th century----
(phone rings)
Old Peter: Hello?
Voice on phone: Hi! Is this Steve?
Peter: No, this is Peter, what number did you dial?
Voice: 3
Peter: ahh, this is 7
Voice: My mistake!

Handled with Care

I really hope that everybody realizes this story is a hoax...
Landover Baptist is the same 'church' that sells Jesus thongs and other terribly funny stuff.
The same guys that run Landover Baptist also do WhiteHouse.org
Anybody who didn't see this coming is...well....dumb enough to watch G4.
TechTV is dead. Long live TechTV.
So far they have raised $8,755 out of a needed $30,000.
Actually, since they're attempting to take on the MPAA in court that really means that they've raised $8,755 out of a needed $infinity.
Good luck nonetheless, guys.

I believe that your post implies that we ever had standards around here.
Please reevaluate your post and adjust accordingly.
kthx.
