Re:run away!
I'm currently using 1&1 and so far, so good.
If you get the root server account ($50/mo) you have your own machine so you could install FreeBSD or whatever you want on it. The rescue disc image is debian linux though, so you'd have to be conversant with that for dealing with a crashed filesystem (and sure that the resuce disc has the appropriate filesystem modules on it for your FreeBSD partitions).
Really though, if you're just interested in a shell account there's not a heck of a lot of difference between a FreeBSD and a Linux shell account (and we're happy about it!). -
1and1
I use 1&1 for linux hosting. They offer cheap Exchange hosting. Click on the Exchange link under Mail on the left side of this page. I think it's exactly what you're looking for.
I'm adamently against the use of Exchange and Outlook. But if you're going to dance with the devil, 1&1 seems to be a great company. -
Re:Best registrars?$5.99 at 1and1.com They also offer free DNS and allow you to point 5 additional domains to their DNS servers for free.
.info are FREE there at the moment. Good control panel too. -
Umm, Colocation?
Set the embed tag on your page to a colocated/shared server at a big ISP.
For instance, I use 1&1. They have a package that's $20/mo for 100GB of transfer, plus $1/GB of traffic after that. You can set a cap on $/mo you want to spend right on the control panel.
For your quarter-meg Christmas card, that's like 200 views per Cent you spend for the first 400000 views and 40 views per cent after that. That's pretty damn cheap advertising. -
Real world example
Check out hosting from http://www.1and1.com/. Linux hosting is $4.99 a month; MS Win hosting with the same features is $6.99 a month. I wrote to 1and1 and asked them why Windows-based hosting was more expensive. I was told that in terms of licensing and maintainence costs, Linux is definitely cheaper.
How do you respond to that, Ballmer? -
Re:Stick with PHP 4
You're right in some ways, but I'd hate to tell someone to stick to php4 when php5 is so much better.
1and1.com offers php5 support already ... just spreading the word, I'm sure there are others, but that's what I know for sure. And if you are in control of your own server, you can keep php4 + apache running in the foreground and then ProxyPass to a second apache running on a diff port if you want to start deploying some php5 apps until you are confident you can move everything over to php5.
2 good refs for that are: http://wiki.coggeshall.org/37.html and http://www.schlitt.info/applications/blog/archives /83_How_to_run_PHP4_and_PHP_5_prallel.html That's what I'm starting to do .. so far, so good. -
Re:I need your help
It appears that his host is onlinehome-server.com which has a price list at here which shows their max monthly bandwidth as being between 25 and 100 gigs. At 90k/s bandwidth (their end) that's 324 megs/hour/person, so assuming 10 people do it it would take 30 hours each to hit their cap. 100 people could do it in 3.
Sounds like fun :) -
Re:Answer
;two reasons:
;one: homogeny. in theory, the more users you have on the same infrastructure, your support and maintenance costs shoudl go _down_ per capita, because your overhead is covered by your increased profit margin. comparing cars (a product) with ISPs (a service) is not comparing apples with apples.
;two: marketshare. why do you think companies like 1&1 decide to give away hosting for 3 years?

Re:Pretty Amazing
linux/plesk root server II from 1and1.com
About now wishing I got the tier III =)

1and1.com
I just opened up an account with 1and1.com. I have their Root Server II package, which, for a $99 setup fee and $69 a month, I get:
- Intel Pentium 4 2.4 GHz
- 512 MB DDR RAM
- 40 Gb HD
- 500 GB bandwidth/month
- Plesk 7.0 Control Panel with 100 domain license
Response times are excellent, and their 24/7 tech support has been quite helpful and always very friendly.
They have several dedicated packages, both managed and unmanaged.
If you do decide to go with them, consider using my referal link.

Free (as in Beer) WebhostingZope's tricky, but for basic web hosting 1and1 web hosting is giving away 3 years of hosting for free. With this you get:
- 500 Mbytes space
- 5 Gb. transfer (.99 cents for every addtional Gb)
- PHP
- CGI
- SSH
- MySQL
- $25 Google ad words voucher
-
1nad1 Internet
There is no excuse for the next three years to not have decent hosting.

Re:Good Yahoo Alternatives?
Or try 1and1.com; it's full domain hosting free for 3 years, with mailboxes and plenty of other features. If there's a catch, I couldn't find it.
-
1&1
1 & 1 Internet Inc. is offering three years free on their hosting plans. Domains are ~$5 a year.
Buying a domain and hosting plan has been the most flexible and powerful solution I've found to spam problems. -
Could be a scam, but . . .
. . . 1&1 hosting is claiming to offer 3 years of hosting free. Since TANSTAAFL, there must be a catch; I just haven't figured it out yet.
