Re:Too Good to be TrueActually, SUVs are not safer for those who drive them.
Taken from http://poseur.4x4.org/reasons2.html#Safe
Taken as a whole, statistics show that cars are safer designs than SUVs. Most of the best selling SUVs still use ladder frames from pickup trucks, which are not designed to absorb collision impacts. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), "In single vehicle crashes, heavy vehicles with stiff frames (most SUVs) might actually do more to harm the vehicle's occupants because there is little give, or energy absorption engineering, to dissipate the force of running into an immovable object." This is proven when you consider the injury ratings in these crash test charts provided by the IIHS. Notice how many cars rate in the yellow (little injury) and how many SUVs rate in the red (high injury).
According to IIHS statistics, the only time an SUV will come out ahead in an accident is if it collides with a smaller vehicle. Even then, the only advantages you get with an SUV are at the expense of those driving smaller cars, which are designed to absorb impacts. SUVs just plain don't make sense safety-wise!
Yes, not the most reliable web site, but I saw the same information on a TLC program.

Too late :-P -
Re:Facts and Opinions are not the sameMy family and I are entitled to as much safety as we can afford.
Except that SUV's in general aren't safer. Yes they are safer in multi-collision crashes, but they have a much higher rate of rollover AND have a higher rate of fatalities when rollover occurs. The laws that classify an SUV as a light truck allows it to pollute more also allows it to be less safe in roll overs. See this site for some good reasons why SUV's aren't safer. Also, if you're already a good driver, having a heavier, bigger vehicle makes you a worse driver because braking/accelerating/maneuvering are ALL compromised by the increased weight and height of an SUV. Just because you feel safer in an SUV doesn't mean you are safer.

Re:You wanna Linux solution?
And let's face it, the Jeep Grand Cherokee is an original, and therefore real, SUV. Almost everything else is for yuppy wankers and soccor moms.
All SUVs are "real SUVs"... real pieces of shit. As for the Cherokee, it comes in a 2 wheel drive model. Any "offroad" vehicle that even offers a 2WD option is targeted at yuppy poseurs like you, and not as anything other than a blacktop-bound middle finger on wheels.
But seriously, if you have a problem with your dick size, please seek medical help, or therapy. Don't waste tens of thousands on an oversize station wagon that can't even begin to compensate for your inability to please women in bed. -

Nah, that's for wimps. What you want is something like these

DEJA SUV! Does this remind anyone...
Of the Future SUV site? It hosts such massive concept vehicles as the Kenworth Pilgrimage, the Grand Dominator, the Eliminator (a new version of last year's Fornicator), and the ever-popular Peterbuilt Crusader All-Sport Denali Outback Eddie Bauer 5.9 Limited.

Some of the more entertaining forms of protest
Against SUVs, that is:
"I'm changing the climate! Ask me how!" bumper stickers.
The SUV Ticket.

Re:Please reference some independent safety survey
Check out The Ultimate Poseur's Sport Utility Page. It's got a good page on the SUV safety myths, plus links to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
The latter site's page "Passenger Vehicles Fatality Facts Tables" tells the story well. The figures show that in a multiple vehicle crash, you're best bets are large (but not very large) cars and utility vehicles. However, in single-vehicle accidents, pickup trucks and utility vehicles are more likely to roll over and kill you than any size car.
The table "DEATHS PER MILLION REGISTERED PASSENGER VEHICLES 1-3 YEARS OLD" summarizes it nicely: All passenger vehicles, except pickup trucks, have basically the same death rate. Also, if you look at the table "DEATHS IN PASSENGER VEHICLES", the number of deaths has remained more or less constant since 1975, with the car fatality rate dropping, and pickup/utility vehicle rate rising, which reflects the growing popularity of those vehicles in recent years. If pickups/utility vehicles were safer, you should see the total death rate drop.
So, here's my inflammatory analysis: If people bought cars instead of SUVs, they'd not increase their risk, but would reduce the danger to others. And if everybody bought cars, the danger from monster SUVs would disappear and everybody'd be safer.

great site for SUV haters...
So Jason, what DO you think about SUVs? I saw this site a couple years ago - it cracks me up and I bet you would get a kick out of it too...

Rotsa Rice! And SUV Poseurs too!
For those not familiar with the idea of what Rice is all about, here's the Riceboy Page.
And while bashing our fellow motorists, why not get in a few digs at the upscale SUV driver, at the Ultimate Sports Utility Poseur Page.
Enjoy, the Devil made me do it! -

Ford - record earnings in 1999
well, it's not too hard to be generous when your rolling in dough, I mean raking it in - geez, ever hear about the profit margins on SUV's being on the order of 10K per unit?

Re:Dumb clients != dumb idea
It's like complaining that Ford made a bad decision to produce a 4 passenger car, because you and your 6 buddies can't fit into it. There's a huge market that's filled by all sorts of different vehicles. When's the last time you've heard someone complain about a company that made semi-trucks, because semi-trucks aren't a family vehicle?
Well, complain no longer. There is a new concept in SUV's. I can hardly wait.
