Remember, the LAME encoder is thought to be as good as Fraunhofer's and it's Free (but may be illegal because certain necessary and irreplaceable algorithms for creating MP3 data are patented).

Short: It's legal. The use of the bit pattern that produces the name Nintendo is termed "fair use."

For example, creating something as simple as a calculator was a monumental feat because every variable was called "IT" so "put IT into clipboard" could be seen all over the place.

Before I found QBasic, I was writing HyperCard games. HyperTalk didn't call all variables it. The variable it was one of two global variables that held the result of some functions that were declared as procedures (this was a common pascal practice back when functions were thought of as having NO side effects). (The other was named theresult (yes, it did have a space). There were shortcuts to put variable contents into it and the result: get foo = put foo into it or in C, it = foo. return foo = put foo into theresult or in C, the_result = foo.

In long filename systems (Windows 9x, Windows NT), the pattern a*.* would match advantage_cheat.exe and aspirin.html but it would miss authors because it doesn't match the pattern of "a, 0 or more characters, dot, 0 or more characters". a*.* was necessary in old DOS because the * refused to match dots.

Intel's 386 protected mode has "code" segments and "data" segments. Writes to code cause a segfault. Branches into data cause a segfault. But if the OS points the code and data segments at the same area of RAM, the 386 doesn't care.

If you look at just the title of Fraunhofer's patent, it says "Digital Encoding Process".

The "Process" detailed in the claims is general enough to cover all MP3 encoding and is necessary and irreplaceable for creating an MP3 bitstream. LAME infringes.

MPEG compresses motion by taking 16x16 pixel blocks from the previous frame and storing the (small) difference. Perhaps this same technique could be used to store the differences between the left and right eyes.

Run the image through a low-pass and a high-pass filter. Compress the high-pass information into tiny wavelets. Repeat the process on the low-pass signal a few times. Quantize and encode the images, and you have a bitstream. This works so well because the eye is believed to use wavelets to recognize features in images.

Stereo pairs could probably use a system similar to the MPEG motion compensation, where a frame is generated based on moving 16x16 pixel blocks around in another frame and storing the small difference.

Thomson Multimedia controls MP3 patent licensing. If the RIAA wants to stop MPEG Audio Layer 3, it could just work with Thomson to get the patent royalties upped. This will cause League for Programming Freedom to throw up a site called Burn All MP3s Day and everyone will go download Vorbis software from Xiph.org and re-rip their CDs.

Why don't the napster users just move over [to alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.*]?

Many ISPs don't subscribe to alt.binaries.* You generally have to pay to get binaries access from a third party.

But it makes it easy to shut down the news accounts of everybody who posts. Most news providers include tracing information in the headers, and this tracing information can be reported to the provider, shutting down the infringer's access to the binaries server.

And it belongs to Turkmenistan.

Actually, a cluster of the CCDs in these tiny cameras would add up to a high-resolution CCD for a bigger camera with film-like (6 megapixel) resolution.

At least with photos, you can scan them at whatever resolution you want; you're not limited as much

Seriously, futurists have hypothesized that we are evolving larger brains (and associated larger heads). Because our machines do more of our work for us, we can get by with smaller bodies. And with overpopulation, competition for the opposite sex is becoming fierce; teardrop-shaped eyes tend to attract chicks. Someday all our moments will be...

SETI@home is looking for radar pulses. Those are likely to be at a constant frequency and perhaps easy to detect.

(I apologize for posting this offtopic comment, but as it concerns trolls, and I posted it in reply to a troll comment, I hope that moderators will at least credit me for trying. I do think that what I have to say here is of relevance to the Slashdot community at large, so I ask only that you please read the whole post before moderating me down.)

Do you hate trolls? Go ahead, you can admit it. Plenty of people do.

But what many people would be surprised to learn is that, when it comes right down to it, trolls don't want to be hated. Sure, they've been known to post lots of offtopic, inflammatory, or just plain stupid comments. But they're not doing it to get you to hate them. I mean, think about it. Does anyone really want to be hated? I'd venture to guess that no human being in all of time has ever harbored an honest desire to be hated. It's against our nature.

Some people say trolls do what they do to get attention, and in most cases, that's certainly true, even if only a small part of their motivation. But most trolls are just trying to be funny -- you know, in an endearing "class clown" sort of way. And some are trying to say something they feel needs to be said, perhaps even something truly insightful, though they lack to words to say it plainly.

Regardless, I submit that if trolls could do what they do, and still get people to like them, they'd jump at the opportunity in a millisecond. As someone with one foot in and one foot out of the "troll community", I think I'm in a good position to conduct an informal survey of what people's main gripes with trolls are.

Therefore, I'd appreciate it greatly if everyone who reads this would take a few minutes to respond to my Troll Poll. The poll options are several of the most common reasons people cite for hating trolls. I've done my best to make the list of options as inclusive as possible, though if you find that your reason isn't listed, please choose "other" and e-mail me with your thoughts. I hope that the results of this poll will be able to provide the troll community with some insight into how they might change their style, to make everyone happier.

Of course, trolls are welcome to respond to this poll as well. There are a couple of options that should suit them.
