I think Appleseed 2004 would fit your bill. It's a combination of cel-shaded characters with beautifully rendered scenery. They actually tried to lip-sync with the words, so it'll much harder dubbing it to English.

Just a little bit of info on the movie: I think it's a remake of the orignal Appleseed OVA made in 1988, which was based off the manga. It was created by Masamune Shirow, so all you Ghost in the Shell fans better check it out.

This is one movie I'd buy if it was ever released here (with subs).

but what happened to Appleseed? The last I heard, it had a North American distribution deal, but not a peep since.

Speaking of other notable Anime, you guys all have heard of Appleseed right? By God, if you haven't git yer butt over to the trailer and check it out. Can anyone who reads Japanses tell me where they are sitting with this movie? This seems like it might be the be all, end all of anime movies.

I had a look through the official site, including an interview with the director, and they never touched upon an overseas release, so I'd guess that you'll have to wait a while longer...
