Yes, it's a glorified PDA. However, it has a usable thumbboard and supports SD/MMC cards for file transfer. Being a PalmOS device, there is plenty of support for synching with the platform of your choice. It's also small enough to fit in your jeans pocket (unlike the fancier Tungsten C).
> Yeah, I think axing the problem-free ZIP builds in favor of the buggy EXE packages was a bad idea.
I'm not really bothered about the lack of a formal zip build. What I do want is a straightforward way of identifying which nightly build the release is based on - without having to run the installer. As it stands, even that doesn't help me, as there don't appear to be any checkins which correspond to the 1.02 build ID (20050317).
Why is this a concern? Due to the locked down nature of the workstations at my client (no install privileges), it's become far more difficult to convince people to try Firefox.
It seems there are no official zip builds for formal releases. Asa's blog explains why and suggests that those looking for them "look at the build ID in the final release, and get the same nightly build from the same branch".
Only problem? The release notes don't specify the build ID, so you have to run the installer first. When you do that, you discover the build ID is 20050317. Only there don't (currently) appear to be any 1.02 zip builds in any of the aviary directories for 20050317.
I really resent paying £120 a year (or whatever) to fund make-over shows, soaps (Eastenders, Neighbours etc.) and all the other assorted lame rubbish on TV. I also resent the fact that Radio 1 pays record companies to advertise their wares (manufactured handbag music).
So you want programming that fits your tastes for £120 and screw those who DO want the lame rubbish? How much entertainment does £120 get in other media?
For context, £120 won't even cover the cost of basic cable TV in most of the U.S. And without basic cable, you're subject to the main commercial channels complete with 50% repeats during "prime time", "if it bleeds, it leads" news coverage, and 15 minutes of commercials for every hour of programming. And you still get the same unwatchable content.
The problem with that calculator is that it ignores the role of the 12V rail in "modern" systems (i.e. P4's, Athlon 64's). Instead it provides a gross (and inflated) wattage figure that takes no account of where the demand is. Not surprising given that the site is interested in selling you a bigger PSU.
I forgot to post this link which goes into more detail about the 12V requirement:

Compare the number it pumps out to this graph of an Athlon64 4000+ based system with a variety of video cards.
That's an interesting turn of phrase. Perhaps our old friend Timothy should have done some minor editing.
It's amusing how the Register comments on the credibility of various bidders, while acknowledging that verisign has been conducting a full-court press campaign.
About time? Seriously its pretty cool, except that canon cameras take compact.
Last I looked, Canon were not the only manufacturers of digital cameras - though I have no doubt the Canon fanboi's will argue they're the best.
The SD format is used in Palm devices as well as cameras from a variety of manufacturers (including Canon). There are also a few MP3 players which use it.
This is a good move on Sandisks part, and depending on capacity/price could effectively kill the market for "low" end flash drives.
So UPI/Washington Times didn't actually hear the speech, did they?
Doesn't surprise me. UPI and the Washington Times were bought by the Moonies awhile ago. You can imagine what that did to the standards of journalism at both places (assuming there were standards in the first place).
I suspect that this would make things even *slower* for me. After all, the connection to the Steam servers will probably have to time out, which is generally even slower than making the connection in the first place.
It takes about 2 seconds to timeout if you disable your network connection in Windows - you don't even need to reach back and unplug your cable.
As for ad-serving, this is the first game I've owned in a while where there is only one logo before the game menu loads. And funnily enough, Vivendi/Sierra is not the logo.
Palm has forgotten the mantra of the original developers that made the Palm III such a success
Yes. The majority of Palms are still being used as PIM tools. Those users don't need cameras, WiFi or MP3 playing capability.
It's a shame Handspring was bought out by PalmOne. I would've liked a replacement for my Treo 90. One that was roughly the same size, perhaps with a nicer screen or better battery life. Instead, the closest replacement is a bloated US$400 Tungsten C.
Microsoft has objected to people helping them distribute SP2
Why on earth don't they post their own tracker and BT client? It'll be just as small (if not smaller) than their custom installer, yet take advantage of everyone elses bandwidth. Post some md5 checksums if people are worried about integrity of the downloaded file.
The only people who won't be pleased about this would be Akamai.
The Price/Earnings (or PE) ratio is what you were looking for I guess.
Yes it was, though I chose to emphasise earnings as that is a shortcut to how well a company is doing. The stock price often has little relation to the underlying strength (or otherwise) of the business.
In Googles case, the P/E appears to be twice that of Yahoo's at 329. Somewhat extreme, but for comparison, Red Hat recently had a P/E just under 300. At those levels, they'd better raise earnings pretty damn quick.
But what matters most in an IPO is what the company is going to do with the money they raise.
In this case, about half of the proceeds are going towards the business.
Who will actually be able to even buy it at that price when it hits? Most people probably wont be able to get the stock until its even higher. How does one go about getting a stock at its IPO price?
That share price is nothing compared to Berkshire Hathaway. It's not the share price that matters, but the earnings per share ($5,190 in the case of Berkshire). A higher stock price is justified if earnings are high and have growth potential.
Had nothing interesting. I think the characters were interesting, and that was enough to make me watch; after all, there are a lot of very popular shows where the characters are the only thing even approximately out of the ordinary.
No proper storyline. How many episodes did you watch before coming to this conclusion?
Call it a symptom of Attention Deficit Disorder - on the part of Fox and the poster you're replying to.
It didn't help that Fox juggled the order of episodes, but the show needed time to breathe. Time it didn't get. Many viewers expect shows to hook them within one or two episodes, whereas Whedons shows sneak up on you over time. Watch how well the show is received by people who watch it on DVD - in the order they were intended.
The game will be capped at 60 FPS anyways : Not too hard to crank out with the current (top) video cards.
Not quite. It's my understanding that the games internal clock will be fixed at 60Hz. However, the renderer will be capable of pumping as many frames as the CPU/video card can handle.
As for 60fps at high resolution, that remains to be seen. If Thief Dark Shadows is any indication (not a good comparison I know), unified lighting isn't exactly a walk in the park - even for the $400+ video cards.
Wireless Hijacker Dealt First UK Punishment
I'm fairly sure the UK legal system has punished people before. Just not necessarily for unapproveed use of a wireless network.

> Most people are too busy USING their computer to worry about what little glitches are in a dialog in control panel that they never use.
Many people still think using "the internet" means clicking on the Explorer icon. A minor item like this doesn't help convince them to switch.

£120 is a low price to pay IMO.

The problem is that the MS world has largely moved onto
I have yet to see a good reason why I should get an A64, beyond the 'dude holy shit its faster then last months model.'
In that case, I presume you would never upgrade as your current box is fast enough.

Nope, you don't need to talk to Steam to play the game (once it's unlocked). Try unplugging your network.
You don't even need to do that. Just disable the network connection in your control panel.

You won't. ftp.mozilla.org looks to be a front-end for some sort of round-robin server farm.

VMS is a text-only adventure game. If you win you can use unix
Heh. My "Little Gray Book" for translating between VMS and Ultrix effectively taught me how to use Unix.
For those feeling nostalgic, this page has links to a DCL emulator and EDT-like editor.
