Re:Download while you still can
I know everyone hates the developer and finds the versioning absurd, but Acquisition is a great client for Mac, supporting Gnutella and Bittorrent.

Re:Score Chart
Speaking of shareware, it's probably worth mentioning that right now, OS X has an incredible selection of shareware available.
Seriously, there are so many astoundingly good programs out there for free/cheap for solving all those pesky annoyances. Independent developers are pumping out titles rivaling the quality of software produced by big companies. It's really a testament to the APIs put out by Apple.
Just to name a few,
quicksilver - data access tool. one of the most innovative programs i've ever used.
CSSEdit - simplistic stylesheet creator/editor. allows idiots to produce valid CSS
Transmit - wonderful FTP client (my only gripe is that this should've been intergrated into the OS itself)
Acquisition - one of the best p2p clients known to man.
Adium X - the power of gaim + the beauty of OSX = priceless
BBEditBBEdit - so it's a bit more well-known than the others here, but is still a marvelous editor. a bit expensive and out of my budget. I use jEdit instead (which is cross-platform, BTW)
just to name a few..... (feel free to add more) -
Re:Limewire = java based.
He should be using Acquisition for OS X. It's the coolest Limewire app out there with full iTunes integration and never slows down your machine. He'll never look back.

Now THIS is different...
The only trouble with the Napster/Best Buy deal is that it is essentially still attached to the 1940's business model of "having media." That's almost impossible when the alternative is convenient, ubiquitous and free.
Sponsored music ...that's the key! Steve Winwood music and video sponsored by NBC and AccessHollywood. We get free tunes and video, they get people seeing them support a new concept, and Winwood gets his music out there and sells concert tickets. Everyone wins, and the lawyers are back to doing wills and divorces.
Yeah it's not 50 Cent, but this is a way cool idea. Why not match products with artists? I'd listen to five seconds of product ID for a free tune, wouldn't you?
Oh the Winwood site has a contest to win an autographed Stratocaster for those guitar or memorabilia whores out there.

Re:Mac + Windows = Success
I'd certainly expect to see that Mac users would be more likely to buy music from the store, which I'd attribute mainly to the lack of P2P clients available on the Mac, which has certainly helped Apple establish themselves in the market with the Mac version of iTunes.
Dude, what are you talking about?
I take it you don't have a Mac. Well, I don't need 10,000 different programs, 99% of which have shitty interfaces sitting atop half-assed implementations. (Then again, this is the place where 'vi' qualifies as a nice interface...so what should I expect?)
My personal favorite client is Acquisition. Nice interface, works well, very Mac-like.

Re:Converted
The "Geek Index" says 1.5GHz G4 is about 2-2.5GHz P4 probably but it depends what you are doing and anyway it's all easily fast enough to code stuff and surf for pr0n.
On the surfing for pr0n note.... pr0n-surfing is many times more enjoyable on my Powerbook than it ever was with my PeeCee - Acquisition is a big reason for this, for sure, but also the fact that Safari blocks most popups on pr0n windows, and I don't have to care about virii. (Don't mention mp3concept, that's not even close to a virus.) -
Re:Shakespeare vs Brian Herbert
A quick check with Acquisition (P2P for OS X):
Mozart: 161 results
MC Hammer: 59 results
Maybe he's broke because no one wants his music anymore? I bet you Britney is washed out and forgotten in 5 years too. -
Re:VoIP
Cross-platform P2P ?
Try gnutella, An excellent client for Mac OS X is Acquisition.
As far as VoIP goes, I'm not too sure =(

Re:Somehow I still had hope for a discount.
that's the way it goes dood, real apple consumers know this, and we all hate it, but we don't really bitch about it. if i were you, and just spent 3k on hardware, i'd download myself a free copy of acquisition, and go lookin for panther, and you might find it at a sufficient discount

Re:The reason
"They cant even offer it fo a measly $20..."
Actually you can, and some even get away with it. for example, check out this Application Program called Acquisition. It appears to be shareware at first, but it's actually open source software.
Also, I see heard people above are saying that support for OSS can't comare with comercial software. That just isn't true. One of the great things about Free Software is that you have options. I can get my support from companies like Cygwin, Redhat, Suse, VaSoftware, or my Neighbor. Competition is a good thing. On the other hand, with companies like Adobe, only have one option for support, the people who own the source code.
If Richard Stallman can do it, so can we. -
Re:Yeah, smart move...
Don't forget Acquitision -- it's a real nice P2P app for OS X. It supports swarm downloading, host browsing, has real nice filtering and so on.

Re:Yikes!
Why so many downloads? I thought Macs had Gnutella clients.
Acquisition is a really sweet Mac OS X Gnutella client.
