Whoa, that iPad prototype
For those who don't know, Samsung marketed this digital picture frame in 2006, long before the iPad was even a rumor, and even pre-dating the iPhone. Notice how the front looks identical to the later Samsung tablets, just with bigger bezels and no button. And it contains all of the distinctive elements of the original iPad that Apple sued over except the home button - flat, rounded corners, black bezels with white/silver edges. As if Apple simply ripped off Samsung's design, then turned around and sued Samsung for ripping them off.
The argument against that version of history has always been that the back of the picture frame looks nothing like the back of the iPad. Well, now we have this image of the back of an early iPad prototype, lending support to the theory that Apple used Samsung's picture frame as a starting point for their iPad design. -
If you feel like doing this...
Don't forget your Thanko 80 port USB hub.

Now there's a decent monitor

Re:Four pounds?
While I agree with you re. Sony (my Sony ES receiver is a champ, and my 2-year-old Sony ES DVD player is solid so far), I have to disagree with "Have you ever been to Japan? Apple looks like shit. Any laptop sold in Japan looks infinitely better than even the slickest apple product sold in the US."
A quick trip to CNET Japan's PC section (via Google Translation) reveals some very plain-looking laptops, with a mostly positive-sounding review of the Macbook Air prominently featured in the top section, in which I'm pretty sure the writer praises the design (can't be totally sure, Google's translation leaves much to be desired).
The overall CNET Japan front page has a link to Onkyo's new Sotec C103 netbook, which looks fairly nondescript & doesn't have very exciting specs.
I'm sure the Japanese market used to be flooded with products that we Americans could only imagined (or had only seen on TV shows that take place in the future and/or in space), but that doesn't appear to be the case anymore.

Re:Practical observations
Maybe you need a modern laptop hard drive
* SecurePark - WD's SecurePark technology parks the recording heads off the disk surface during spin up, spin down and when the drive is off. This ensures the recording head never touches the disk surface resulting in improved long term reliability due to less head wear, and improved shock tolerance.
* ShockGuard - WD's ShockGuard technology protects the drive mechanics and platter surfaces from shocks during shipping and handling and in daily operation.
* Free-fall Sensor - As an added layer of protection, if the drive (or the system it's in) is dropped while in use, WD's free-fall sensor detects that the drive is falling and, in less than 200 milliseconds, parks the head off the disks to help prevent damage and data loss.
* WhisperDrive - WD's exclusive WhisperDrive technology combines state-of-the-art seeking algorithms that result in one of the quietest 2.5-inch drives on the market.
I've got 2 x 320-gb WD drives in my laptop - VERY quiet, very good performance - can you even BUY 320gig SSDs?

Re:Market for this?
The most recent Gundam game has done just this in the arcade. It's taken the anime cockpits and made 'real' versions of them, the same lay out and everything, it seems to be quite the interesting game.
http://www.akihabaranews.com/en/news-14983-Akihabara+News+test+Senjo+No+Kizuna%2C+the+ultimate+Mecha+Simulator+Arcade+Game..html has a video of it, but the guy has no clue what he's talking about nor really doing IMO. -
Go figure.
Wow, I will never figure out Japan.
In Japan, it's acceptable and perfectly legal to walk into Tsutaya (i.e. the Japanese "Blockbuster"), rent an armful of CDs, rip to your heart's desire, and then return them the next day.
This reminds me of the time last year when, in the name of safety, the Japanese government tried to make it illegal to sell used electronic items. -

But, for $122, I where ELSE it is useful for... (doesn't look like it'll draw blood)
But, if anyone figures out this works for their pets, I imagine the gillette marketing team will cringe... struggling to shake off the image of their pricey gizmo being used by vets and frugal pet owners.... new, unwanted ad/slogan: "GilLETTe... the BEST a PET can GEHEHET..."

iDisk
Anyone know where you can buy the iDisk referenced in the article? Also, does it have any other storage options larger than 128 meg?
Has anyone out there ever used a usb drive this small, and was it effective? -
iDisk
They're all pretty weird, except the iDisk. That product seems pretty useful to me. I might actually be tempted to keep that little thing on me, unlike clunker "keychains". I could put it in my wallet, for instance. Who cares about the likelihood of losing it? That doesn't make it "weird." When I buy it I know it's small.* Small is useful. It's not weird at all.
* There's a joke in there, somewhere. Go nuts.**
** Yeah, I know. -
