Why?I never thought computers were all that loud in the first place. I think my refrigerator makes more noise. More importantly, I found that I have a harder time falling asleep at night if my computer isn't on. Strange..

If it ain't broke, don't fix it?Our company is deploying three new Airborne shipping stations this week. Airborne / DHL is way behind when compared to the other carriers (FedEx and UPS). Their software, Libra is still a monochrome DOS based application. They have it running as a DOS window on Win2k so they can have ODBC connectivity.

Don't sue someone bigger than youSunnComm probably realized this isn't just some kid trying to burn CDs but rather a research student at a large and well respected institution. Not only would the lawsuit get lots of bad press for SunnComm but the University might choose to aid his defense.

Would using Linux be illegal?Since Linux would ignore the autorun and not install the Windows/Mac DRM software, would that be considered bypassing the security?

Similar Technology @ PurdueBoilermaker football fans at Purdue University's Ross-Ade Stadium are able to score up-to-the-minute statistics, player and coach biographies and other electronic "infotainment" using PDAs. Purdue received $1.2 million from Cisco to roll out the new wireless infrastructure at the stadium. I haven't tried it myself (not that much of a geek), but definately cool idea.

Easy to bypassOur school offers VPN access and I'm sure most other Universities do also for off campus students. Simply keep your RESNET box connected to the VPN and voila.

They have no reason for worryIt's apparent that Google employs by far the best programmers in the world. Google has published numerous white papers details their infrastructure and technology. By the time a competitor has time to implement, Google would already be far ahead with new innovations.

Waste of SpaceI don't understand why people still continue to build large clusters with footprint style cases. We have a linux cluster here at Purdue built from standard off the shelf cases / components. It takes up so much space, it frequently gets mocked. Especially now, we've since built smaller clusters using Dell 1U rackmount servers that take up 1/10 the space with ten times more computing power. Bigger is not always better.

Gambling and InsuranceI've always thought it funny how all these search pages consider Gambling and Insurance the "most" popular search categories. I don't think I've ever searched for gambling sites in my life and neither have most Internet users. They should rename it "Least Popular categories, but sites who pay us advertising dollars".

RTI was struggling with a similar issue myself. People in my organization would constantly email me with requests "can you do this real quick". Well 50 emails later that day it became impossible to prioritize the information. I installed a ticket system called RT which has greatly simplified my life. Runs on mod_perl and is open source, I highly recommend it.

What did they do all that time?Is anyone else confused by the fact that it took them 2 1/2 hours to go 7.6 miles at a speed of 12.5 mph? With those numbers it works out to be 36 minutes... okay, i'm a dork.

SCO Appoints New Information Ministerthe former Iraqi Information Minister, Mohammed Saeed as-Sahaf, made famous during the US-Iraqi War has been offered a position as the new SCO Information Public Relation Officer.
His rank shall will remain as General, but with a royal rasberry tunic color.
The former I.M, Mr. McBride, who is stepping aside to focus on more demanding issues (i.e., option dumping and viable exit strategies), will remain as the SCO CEO.
First SCO public statement from Gen. Saeed as-Sahaf has been reportedly delivered from United Arab Emirates via a microcassette tape as "SCO shall return!" followed by "I.B.M. hasn't touch Santa Clara Operations," and "History will tell!"
No comments from Mr. McBride as how much the new I.M. is being paid to deliver these messages.
(fading tune to Ian Fleming's Goldfinger movie theme).

BahHow do they sleep at night? Obviously pretty well. If I was an employee of SCO Group, I'd be pretty pissed, seeing as they are putting the company in the crapper.

Auto Update?I know all our Windows boxes at the office use the "auto update" feature to download patches at 3am each night. I figured most people would be using this great feature. Instead of trying to keep up with all the security fixes, I let Microsoft push them to me.

OJAny faith I had in the legal system was lost on the O.J. Trial. I'm placing my bets on who's pockets are deeper (IBM). Remember, the law isn't about what's right or wrong.

AgreedAll our desktop computers are Windows, and simply have too many users to try and keep everyone patched. So instead, block all incoming ports on the firewall, and voila. Why this isn't standard practice is beyond me.

Rio ReceiverI was thinking about the Rio Receiver, but I couldn't remember the name. What happened to it? Is it still around, or was it a flop? I saw them for $300 when they came out a couple years ago, and was going to wait until they went down in price.

FinallyThis is exactly what I've been waiting for. There are lots of great MP3 players out there, but most depend on USB. I want something that I can use with my stereo system, and running a 30 ft CAT5 is much easier than 30ft of USB cable. Now only if it were 802.11. I think this device will definately have me looking at Ogg.
