Re:What's the problem?
Because there are obvious non-counterfit uses for pictures of currency? One of my favorite examples is this photo from dpchallenge.com.
Besides the banks should start worrying about the MUCH larger problem of identity theft which affects orders of magnitude more people every day then counterfiting. Something as simple as requiring all credit cards to have a photo of the owner which is also encoded on the magnetic stripe would go a LONG way towards eliminating it. -
Re:Censorship = Government?
Yep especially since one of the images I saved from dpchallenge.com might not be editable is the new version of PS because it contains recognizable security features of currency. Here is the picture in question, funny enough I resized it in PS6 so that my ISP doesn't take as much of a hit from the slashdot effect =)

Re:If you want to see a sonic boom
Sure since it is far enough down I don't think my ISP will kill me too much for linking to it.
Here you go. -
Physical Attacks in an Internet Based World
From the headline, I thought this article was going to be about that shooting at Case Western. The apparent motive was that the victim left a nasty message on the shooter's guest book: Biswanath Halder vs. Shawn Miller, et al.

Nothing onerous here
I have used and been 100% happy with my isp APK.net for the last decade. If you are in N.E. Ohio I highly recomend them. There aren't any really bad clauses in their TOS which can be viewed Here. The only things I don't like is the no lan clause (actually this is only in the dialup TOS and is kind of bunk because the owner specifically recomends a NAT'ing firewall for DSL service so I doubt it's ever been enforced), and the account placed on hold for a no-hangup program clause which again I have never heard of them enforcing (I ran some bots for a while and they never questioned me about the line being connected for 21 days straight =)

Re:Fair and balanced? ROFTL..In reply to all the left/right talk in this thread. (Yes, I admit that this post is a bit off-topic from the original article, but it's relevant to all the posts from people talking about the "left" and "right", so I'll post it.)
From another post:
um please explain that. what i see is a country led by an extreme right wing leader (athiests arent citizens, the only way to settle problems is thru war, big business rocks, capitalism rocks, etc). maybe i just missed all the humanitarian things bush is doing, so if you could please enlighten me i would be greatful.
No, Bush truly is not "extreme right wing", he's actually closer to down the middle. Aside from that, your definition of "right wing", "conservative" is full of misconceptions. You and many other "left wingers" might be dedicated to humanitarian ideals, but government involvement in everything is not the way to go about that. The United States was founded on the ideas now called "conservative". Read the Constitution if you doubt that. There's nothing there which gives the government the right to do "humanitarian" things. These are left to churches and other private organizations, where they belong, and where they actually get done. Government involvement only does the opposite, allowing those in power to get rich while the rest of the world suffers from excessive taxes and inflation.
From another post in this thread:
Liking capitalism is an "extreme right" idea? We live in a capitalist society.
Sadly, no. We live in a progressively socialist society. We (at least the US) started out capitalist, but with things like the IMF and World Bank, we have been progressing down the road of Fabian Socialism for many years. "Fabian" is the term chosen by the Fabian Society, led by such English socialists as Sidney and Beatrice Webb and George Bernard Shaw. Quintus Fabius Maximus Verrocosus was the Roman general who won the Second Punic War against Hannibal:
{Fabian policy}, a policy like that of Fabius Maximus, who, by carefully avoiding decisive contests, foiled Hannibal, harassing his army by marches, countermarches, and ambuscades; a policy of delays and cautions. (dict.org)
Thus, the Fabian goal is the same as that of the Communist Bolsheviks, but their means. are through propaganda and legislation rather than violent overthrow.
The stained glass window at the Beatrice Webb House in Surrey, England, shows Shaw and Webb reshaping the world on an anvil, with the crest of a wolf in sheep's clothing in the background between them. It also portrays the masses below them, kneeling to worship books advocating the theories of socialism.
Through such institutions and policies as the Federal Reserve, FSLIC, and FDIC in America, and the IMF (also see: here) and World Bank internationally, America and the rest of the world have been submerged in the "ideals" of socialism.
For more information, if you want to be an informed and educated individual rather than another mindless person screaming "right wing extreme!", do some research on the Bolsheviks/Mensheviks, socialism, the Federal Reserve System, the FDIC, other policies instituted during Roosevelt's socialist "New Deal", the IMF and World bank established at the Bretton Woods Conference in 1944 by Fabian socialists at least two members of a Communist espionage ring in Washington, among other things.
For a start, I recommend The Creature from Jekyll Island to anyone who thinks we truly live in a free-market, capitalist society. The author, through much research, exposes the mechanisms which are making this society socialist (which is to say, liberal, aka "left"), and which have been the cause of massive inflation over the years by creating oney out of nothing.

Re:They already monopolize, in a way
This makes no sense to me. How will 802.11b provide an alternative to telcos?
Working for a wireless division of a major networking company I can answer this one. With Long hauls using high gained antennas combined with lower power more spread out coverage at the point of distribution. In fact this is how I plan to get broadband. I am too far for dsl (just over 15k ft from CO) and Adelphia bought the local cable company a year and a half ago and said we would get digital cable and cablemodem "real soon now". So I am working with a very, very good regional isp APK here in Cleveland to bring an 6-8Mbps wireless trunk 17 miles from their downtown office to a tower not far from my suburban home. Then a number of residential customers near me along with almost an entire business park are going to connect to it via a second ap and antenna on the same tower with cheap antennas in our residnces and businesses. More bandwidth than a couple T-1's for less that 1/4 the monthly cost of one T-1! (this includes tower rental etc.) -

It might not be that great, but it's my sense of humor and some that this community would like!

Re:I had no clueOn the main page, http://slashdot.org , I see summaries below each headline. You know, written by Hemos or whoever, and it contains a link or a submission from a slashdotter. What I'm saying is that I didn't know what this article was about at all from the summary. I had to click the link and "Read More" to figure it out. The summary should give me a bit more info. This has happened a few times recently.

I had no clueI love Slashdot and all, but recently I've been noticing that the summaries on the main page are horrible. I had NO clue what was going on here. Then after trying it, I'm glad that I did find that site, its nice.
But please, leave more suggestive descriptions of the articles at hand.

Re:Features you want
My friends and I have our baby p75 (soul.apk.net) on a co-located network. What I find is VERY important is a redundant internet connection to several different backbones. I personally think that most networks suck, but when you have a connection to 5 different ones, speeds to various sites are going to be much better. The rest of the suggestions have been very good.

AMD is amazing..
I've said this before and I'll say it again -- for you investors, AMD is a surefire thing. I bought it right when the k7 roadmap was announced, and they've done nothing but good things since. AMD is taking over their market -- might as well join in for the ride.

Re:But can it get a foothold?
This is a major problem. What I would do for myself is to have an mp3->ogg converter for the current collection, and then use ogg from then on. However, if the public doesn't accept it (maybe they won't like the name Ogg Vorbis!), then it could be an uphill battle.
Mike Roberto (roberto@soul.apk.net) -GAIM: MicroBerto -
Re:Still Interesting even if it's not newsBut Bruce -- do you have any good ideas for getting this accepted if it does end up kicking ass? This is also a general question -- there are many things that can be improved but no one likes change. What's the best motivator or idea?
Thanks..

Re:"CD" quality? Not.
No, it runs quite well at 160kbps right now, and is taking great strides for the lower and higher bitrates. Check out the web page and try em out.
Mike Roberto (roberto@soul.apk.net) -GAIM: MicroBerto -
Re:Yes!The only downside I can see is that this may bring even more fire from the RIAA. One of the arguements I have seen many times here is that MP3s are lossy, and thus aren't close to being the same quality as the original... Let's hope these things aren't high enough quality to blow that out of the water, or we'll be seeing a whole lot of heat being drawn on it...
Hey, how can we help it if the open source movement perfects the standard to the point of absolute quality?! All the power to us
:)
Mike Roberto (roberto@soul.apk.net) -GAIM: MicroBerto -
Why I should use Vorbis!1. Open source
2. No royalties ever owed to jerks
3. Already comparable to mp3 and once finalized will be better quality and compression
4. LGPL
5. It will support more than 2 channels (if it doesn't yet)
6. Already have audio player plugins for it, they're getting better.
7. With a name like Ogg Vorbis, its GOT to be good!
8. Their logo is awesomeand finally..
9. The extention is going to be .ogg !!! How cool is that?! I'm there!

Hopeful client improvementsThis will hopefully be helpful to clients like GAIM (which rules!) so that they can operate better. About a week ago there was a big TOC outage, that could possibly have been prevented with an open infrastruction.
Also, a bit offtopic. For GAIM, I want to program a plugin. Let me know if you like this idea: It's a bit like call-screening. Basically, you go into away mode, but then there are some people that you select that CAN IM you without an away message (like your best friends). You all know why this would be useful... think of when you're busy but want to be online in case your best buds have somethin to say. But filter the rest out without hurting their feelings! It wouldn't be that hard to program, everything we have is there, I just suck with C. Let me know if anyone is interested. Thanks!

Re:We need another moderation optionI did the right thing at first: go to a mirror. So i tried ftp.sourceforge.org from my multi-t3 at work, thinking it'd be fast: 7kb/s.

ftp.mozilla.org: 390kb/s.
mozilla never ceases to amaze me. They even release m16 when m15 started crashing a lot and i was ready to get a nightly build!
Mike Roberto (roberto@soul.apk.net) -GAIM: MicroBerto -
This only means one thing...I actually read that article when I was extremely bored, and let me tell you why Adobe would sue over this -- because Photoshop 6 is going to be nothing special, and the screenshots basically sucked. Photoshop has reached the end of its innovative time, and that could be seen after Photoshop 4. Photoshop 5 had some great new stuff like the history, but Photoshop 6 does not contain any drastic improvements.
Adobe would LOVE it if they ran an article on Photoshop 6 if it was very good, but they obviously have as little enthusiasm and confidence in it as I do.
Although Adobe does have a right to sue - they now MAY lose product sales because of this (no one cares about Photoshop 6 because its nothing new), I think that they should get tossed out because the people have the right to know how a preview release operated.
Besides, what's the difference between a pre-release review that loses sales and a post-release review that loses sales? Not much. It would happen either time, and the only people that would buy the program on the day of its opening (before the poor reviews would come out) are the ones that would buy it anyway, even after the poor reviews come out.
On a sidenote - go gimp!
And another sidenote - this is the most pirated program in the world, EVER. Adobe should be doing other things in the legalroom.
Thanks if you're still reading :)

Re:This would be great if Mars actually existed ..Q: Is there a reason that no human being, other than liberals, has actually seen Mars with their own two eyes? (hint: faked photographs don't count.)
Yes - humans lack the physical and psychological power to view the awesome site of Mars.
Q: Is there a reason that the Martian landscape, a completely different planet, so strikingly resembles the Arizona desert? (you bet your butt there is)
Yes - the awesome planet of Mars is simply a Godly version of the ever-magificent state of Arizona.
Q: Why do liberals find it so decidedly convenient to distract schoolchildren with prophetic nonsense about "other planets" instead of focusing their attention on the here and now where it belongs? Lots of topics of education are being outright ignored in favor of liberal subjects such as astronomy, evolution, and heliocentrism.
Liberals, being sold out to "the man," (or in this case, the power-weilding government), are forced to distribute the truths of the awesome planet of mars. This is due to the Godly Martian Creators having mortal control over the Government, who in turn control the liberals.

Its almost timeIts almost time to give up on Napster. I think that we should go down fighting, but won't be surprised when others have to find alternate means of finding songs.
Napster has given us the one thing we need though - an amazing idea. You must commend them on that. Napster, the idea, can NOT be stopped.
No matter how deep one digs, there will always be a level of underground another step deeper.
The time is going to come for us to move back down underground and use IRC (That's what I use for my death and power METAL - DalNet - #mp3_death and #mp3_metal (cant usually find this on Napster)), FreeNet, Gnutella, and others.
In Napsters defeat, realize that the RIAA and the music industry has NOT won at all. We will still willingly pirate music, and they cannot stop it. No matter what they do, it won't be stopped. Never. And that's a damn shame for them, I don't give two shits about their stock.
Just remember -- WE WIN.
Mike Roberto (roberto@soul.apk.net) -GAIM: MicroBerto -
Personally, I don't trust them
I think that we better keep an eye on these guys to make sure that they're not violating the GPL. I think that they'll be up to something in order to make it run better, and won't want to show us the fun.
