Re:The Great Auckland Blackout in New ZealandAs an 18 year old, this sounds like it'd be fun for a month (but not much more). Life always demands a change, and this could be a small vacation. I can imagine all of the fun parties, walking/running/biking, and just sitting around with friends and play cards, knowing that you're not missing anything.
Of course, the parent who puts his child in front of the TV would feel differently

If it works half that fast I'll buy it though. I don't want to wire up through 2 stories in my house with cat5. I doubt it'll touch 14Mbps at all, but I don't care. Slow is good enough for me, I just want to print on my mommmy's computer

Stop AT&T CampaignThe Stop AT&T Campaign sounds very weak. Of course AT&T wants the whole internet. But so do 100,000 other companies as well. Out where I live, its Ameritech who's breaking the laws, as an example.
Big deal about AT&T, they have to compete with the other monopoly-wanabes and the market will still prevail.

Re:What's New in Mandrake 7.1
This is actually true, I am amazing on their Netscape builds. I'm still using my crash-free mozilla m15 though, but my fonts SUCK. I submitted a bug report and mandrakers quickly replied, but didn't fix the problem, only changed some fonts to unaliased and now fonts like the slashdot subject headings are just REALLY small rather than enlarged and crappy
Mike Roberto (roberto@soul.apk.net) -GAIM: MicroBerto -
Re:What's New in Mandrake 7.1
And i JUST got 7.1beta. But as far as my options are concerned, I won't need to upgrade just yet... 7.1b is great though!

Re:Allright...It's not about being cheap -- it's about the fact that the average ISP doesn't get DoS'd very often. A good ISP would rather spend time innovating and getting new equipment going. It's the game of life - unlimited wants and limited time and resources, we can't do it all.
I'd rather have good DSL provided (which i live too far away to get anyway!) and a small chance of a DoS than a super-secure network and shitty DSL.
Mike Roberto (roberto@soul.apk.net) -GAIM: MicroBerto -
Re:Humm
Wow, this is more than funny, this is heavily insightful. I didn't think of it that way. The ISP must side with its customers, they are the ones paying the money.
Mike Roberto (roberto@soul.apk.net) -GAIM: MicroBerto -
Re:Moral of the StoryTo play the devil's advocate, if an ISP sees a DDoS agains one client, and the removal of that client will allow hundreds of other clients to retain access, the ISP should remove the one for the good of the many.
Bah... only temporarily until they figure everything out and have the DoS a bit more down.
Mike Roberto (roberto@soul.apk.net) -GAIM: MicroBerto -
Re:Well, was that in the contract s/he signed?
The contract most likely says that they can cancel the account for whatever reason they want. If not, I say you bring em to court!
Mike Roberto (roberto@soul.apk.net) -GAIM: MicroBerto -
I had a similar storyI work at an ISP as well, and today there was a problem regarding the acceptable usage policy and some objectionable material.
However, I handled it quite differently. I told the user to stop breaking the policy (spamming newsgroups), but also expressed that I didn't care about what he was hosting -- I don't censor that, nor do I care.
ISPs must respect their users freedoms, and know who the real enemy is; And it's not the guy paying 40 bux a month for his ADSL connection, that's for damn sure.

AbiWord!Once again, nobody has mentioned AbiSuite!
AbiWord is taking enormous strides and has the best looking and easiest word processor around, and they cover SEVERAL operating systems. It's also about 2 megs, rarely crashes, and is having more and more features added, although its not totally loaded yet.
AbiWord is a great program and I recommend it for word processing in linux.

Game, set, match.Sony Playstation 2 wins. MS and Nintendo and Sega lose.
This is kind of what NVidia does, if I am reading the article correctly. You then get GREAT competition within their own systems for the best price and quality, and just look how much marketshare NVidia has taken, (despite my GeForce still not working)... It's a great idea!

Re:And here's tons of information you should read. Here's a link to an Open-source Div-x contest, albeit for the Mac, but it's here: http://www.flashingyellow.com/contest.html
This is a good thing for the linux community (and every other system as well), right? After all, if there is source, then it can be made to work for linux fairly easily, correct? I hope so at least!

Re:And here's tons of information you should read.
I was at a friend's dorm at Ohio State and watched as DivX of his (Trainspotting), and i must say that it was amazing! The movie wasn't short, it was awesome quality (you don't even know you're wathcing it on a computer after a minute), sound was good enough for me not to notice, and was like 450megs! Movie was cool too, pretty crazy.

Re:How about we starts to share faked Metallica fi
Why? So you can just get booted like another 500,000 people and no one will care?
Mike Roberto (roberto@soul.apk.net) -GAIM: MicroBerto -
Re:Napster File AliasingWhile playing cards with friends, my friend asked if he should now delete his Metallica mp3's, because Napster shares everything on his hard drive and doesn't care WHAT folder its in, it finds them all! I then went on a rant and just said to name them Metalli.mp3 or something, which should work.
I then realized that my friends were laughing at me, not because of what I was saying, but because we were playing Egyptian Ratscrew and they stole a ton of my cards that I would have won.
But the point sticks, we should announce a leadership where all the "e"s can just be switched to 3's (31337 style! haha), and then stay safe and people could search for m3tallica.
Mike Roberto (roberto@soul.apk.net) -GAIM: MicroBerto -
Re:If napster had balls...If I sang a song called "metalica sucks" and distributed it on napster...would I be banned?
The unfortunate answer to your question is yes. That's all it looks for. And that is why this method should not be accepted, no questions asked. oh. but only IF napster had balls. Seems like they're gonna go down anyway, they might as well go down fighting harder than what they are.
Mike Roberto (roberto@soul.apk.net) -GAIM: MicroBerto -
If napster had balls...If napster had any sac, they could just throw all of this out because it does NOT prove that there is a Metallica song being shared. That bot doesn't actually DOWNLOAD 300,000 songs and LISTEN to them. It's simply not proven to be piracy at that point. They could be short clips.
And now a song like Run DMC vs. Metallica [remix] or whatever now gets them booted off too! fuck that, Napster should do to these idiots what Slashdot did to Microsoft -- Send back a letter from the lawyer that is just lawyeresque for "fuck off". This bullshit isn't good enough proof.

Live by the sword, die by the sword
As much as I would like to see MS go down in any battle, I am a vehement free speech supporter and think that they can print whatever they want, wherever they want. I don't really care, and I don't think anyone's being hurt. It's nice to see everyone fighting MS back though, no matter their size or economic status.

My favorite thing about GNOME 1.2
Although this sounds stupid, you must admit that the purple flower that is shown when GNOME loads is the coolest looking thing ever! The shades of purple on it are very deep and satisfying, and it is like the doorway to a very pleasant looking system.

Re:TranslatorsSorry I'm replying to this -- the main reply button isn't working.
The simple solution to this problem is to drop all business with any companies taking these threats, and host the site in Russia or somewhere like that. Support the economy of a country that doesn't care about such bullshit.

Re:why a mouseYou must have never been a good Quake player. Mouse aiming is CRITICAL!

ID's turnoverIs it me or does ID have relatively high job turnover? It seems that someone big leaves every 3 or 4 months.
The last time I asked htis, i got flamebait, but it was cool that John Carmack himself replied to me and explained what had happened.. but still: what's going on over there?
Mike Roberto (roberto@soul.apk.net) -GAIM: MicroBerto -
Too bad it's open sourceWell, I don't think we should have to worry even IF AOL Execs (or whoever) made this feature go away. A patch can be made quite easily from the old code and compiled right in. That's what's so great about open-source.. We WILL get what we want (assuming there's one programmer that can/will do it!)
Now, although this is still hypothetical that the man has layed the smack down on this feature.. it can still go to show that we will dominate because open source gives us what we want, not what the billionaires want.
Mike Roberto (roberto@soul.apk.net) -GAIM: MicroBerto -
SourceforgeI think its funny that slashdot has posted a link to an article criticizing Sourceforge, and then announces its use on the same day
:)I don't think sourceforge is all that bad, personally. Guess slashdot doesn't either!
Mike Roberto (roberto@soul.apk.net) -GAIM: MicroBerto -
Can this dumb program PROVE it though?Allright, so a bunch of idiots put together a program that lists people that are supposedly serving metallica songs, even though Metallica is the weakest band around.
Anyway, is this provable evidence in court? Did this program DOWNLOAD and LISTEN to the songs? What if someone gets kicked off because they have a Chuck D song that is renamed to Metallica-One.mp3 ?? What if its a lower quality, or is just a clip, and not an entire song?
Has this stupid program (written by a stupid company (hired by a stupid band))) proven anything here?
Mike Roberto (roberto@soul.apk.net) -GAIM: MicroBerto -
Good that they team up?Why, Hemos, why is it good that anyone teams up with AOL?
First off, I was under the understanding that competition is good for a healthy economy, quality, and choice-making process.
Second, why is it good that ANYONE works with AOL? I wish everyone would work against em!
Oh well.. now i should go read the article
:)

Mike Roberto (roberto@soul.apk.net) -GAIM: MicroBerto -
The answer to almost EVERY question!!!:After reading many of these questions, I feel that an answer to almost every single one of these questions is this:
Metallica is the man's bitch.
Metallica's music has seriously degraded within the last few CD's and live performances.
Metallica is mentally incapable of making their own decesions -- allowing the corporate system to suck them in.
Metallica doesn't feel for music anymore, only money.
Metallica is weak, both in mindset and in music.
Metallica is ignorantly meddling in things that they don't understand -- the online music revolution.
Metallica doesn't know what to do to fight something that they shouldn't be fighting in the first place. Their response is to treat the effect, not the cause. [Double-wrong!]
and Yes, of course Metallica is being censored by their label. They are bitches to the man.
If you're interested in some REAL metal, let me know, I'll point you in the right direction.
Mike Roberto (roberto@soul.apk.net) -GAIM: MicroBerto -
Re:Kill 'Em All
The apparent answer to this question is because Metallica is a bitch to the corporate system and doesn't know how to stand on their own. They are weak, just as their music has become.
Mike Roberto (roberto@soul.apk.net) -GAIM: MicroBerto -
Change in technology.. or change in Metallica?
Imagine that this exact scenario took place 12 years ago. Would the more-potent Metallica of the past have done this same thing back in the "good ol' days"? Or have your politics changed considerably since being corporatized and mainstreamed? [this is censorable... i just wanted my wise-crack in there]
:)
Mike Roberto (roberto@soul.apk.net) -GAIM: MicroBerto -
the economics of it
Countries that have strong regulations will realize that they are going to be losing business in this market because it is so easy to up and move to a place with little or no regulations. The worse the regulation, the worse it is for the economy. I hope more sites do this, government control deserves a slap in the face.
