Re:DON'T PANIC
Android (as shipped with most phones) is about as open source as iOS is. iOS's kernel and most of the userspace is open source, just like Android's. A huge amount of what users expect from the devices is closed source, just like Google Apps and Google Play Services.
Read the AOSP/Cyanogenmod/etc forums sometime. Most people install Google Apps, and at that point you're well back into mothership calling blackbox land.

Because of your statements, I must ask you: what is a MacBook Air?
This is a MacBook Air.

Mobile OS market shares?
Unfortunately, the article doesn't mention individual numbers, but given that iOS dominates the mobile internet, maybe this is due to Apple's expansion into China.

Re:iOS Management Tools for non-macs
It's a good thing that there is plenty of MDM solutions that fully support everything you want to do without having to ever touch a Mac then, isn't it? The only thing that requires a Mac is the iPhone Config Utility, and a Mac Mini fixes that nicely. And, now with touchless device enrollment, you probably don't even need that anymore.
OS X Server is not required for management of iOS devices, and in fact only makes sense if you are a Mac shop and using Profile Manager to manage your OS X boxes. Otherwise, look at the many other solutions available that can also manage Android and WinMo in order to not lock yourself to a platform any more than necessary.

Re:KeePass?
This way, if/when the cloud provider is hacked, the password file is not just protected by the passphrase, but by a keyfile that an attacker would have to compromise a physical device to get.
If you believe Apple, that's how their iCloud Keychain works. They say they can't decrypt your keychain, because the keys are embedded in your phone and never transmitted.

Re:iOS developer program is NC-17
I don't know; I didn't attend, and the videos on Apple's page require the purchase of a Mac or iOS device to view. "System Requirements: To watch the streaming version of this video, use the latest version of Safari on a Mac running OS X Lion or later. Alternatively, you can watch this video in the WWDC app". Without any other information, my guess is that kids are programming applications for OS X, as unlike iOS application development, OS X application development doesn't require an ongoing subscription. Other results that Google dug up deal with parental control for in-app purchases. Could you explain further?

Does this mean the death of Minix3? That would be a shame I'd like to have seen a good open-source microkernel OS - a sort of "open source OSX".

Re:Where the fault lies?
IOS full device encryption is only activated when a passcode is added to the device. Android's works the exact same way. If you don't have a passcode on your iPhone, your device is NOT encrypted, and resetting your device will have the exact same vulnerability to these kinds of data restoration tools.

Well, on an iPhone, you have to log in using your Apple ID. So there's that.

As for the Google & Microsoft implementations that the story is discussing, you'll have to wait and see, I guess.

Re:I still dont understand...
How there can be laws to prevent you from selling to an individual in any industry. I know they were purchased, but still how can a law like this ever get passed with out SOMEONE getting in its way?
There is a mass delusion here that manufacturers are just dying to sell directly to the consumer.
Note the 'fuck you' prices on this page:
They don't want to deal directly with us. This might change, little by little, but it is not a great conspiracy like the AMA. Most auto manufacturers are like Apple. They don't give a fuck and won't discount to sell direct. End of story.
-
Re:Consumer = LOSE
I don't agree. Apple has had an iPod integration protocol since 2005 which is supported by tons of OEM and aftermarket devices. That same protocol is still usable with the latest iPhone 5s and in iOS 8, nine years later. That protocol can even be used now to control third-party apps that are running, so I can pause and fast-forward just as I could if using the music app.
If Google makes a protocol that's simple for manufacturer's to adopt, and is suitably stable, that's good enough for me.

Future is here for some displays on OSX

They should take the Apple TV as an example
It's insane that a stupid cable box takes as much power in 2014. The Apple TV has a 6W built-in power supply and I'm pretty sure it never goes that high. The standby power requirements are probably in the mW range, too.

Re:Left brain vs. right brain leadership
I think the app store is inherently evil in how they regulate apps (think VLC, anything with F/OSS code in it)
Ahem. Get your facts straight.
One of the Developers of VLC decided to have a hissy fit and VOLUNTARILY REMOVED VLC from the App Store. Apple didn't "ban" VLC. VLC "banned" ITSELF.
And F/OSS? Point to me where it says that App Store apps (whether iOS or OS X) cannot have F/OSS code in them? Hell, on the Apple website, the damned *OS*(es) have pages crowing about the number of F/OSS Projects that OS X (and iOS) incorporate (and to which Apple contributes and/or has initiated themselves).
WTF is your problem, hater? -
Re:Legacy file systems should be illegal
On both 10.8 and 10.9 computers, Disk Utility's default format option is "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" and this translates into a signature on disk of:
00000400 48 2b 00 04 80 00 20 00 48 46 53 4a 00 00 00 75 |H+.... .HFSJ...u|
From opensource.apple.com hfs_format.h says this is version 4.
When choosing either of the case sensitive options, I get:
00000400 48 58 00 05 80 00 20 00 48 46 53 4a 00 00 00 75 |HX.... .HFSJ...u|
If journaling is disabled they become (respectively):
00000400 48 2b 00 04 80 00 00 00 31 30 2e 30 00 00 00 75 |H+......10.0...u|
00000400 48 58 00 05 80 00 00 00 31 30 2e 30 00 00 00 75 |HX......10.0...u|
So internally it's H+ or HX, and both can be HFSJ. For whatever reason, by default we still get version 4 (H+). -
Re: poorly
Apple updates are available to all compatible devices on the day of release.
So just make some devices incompatible right?
Why doesn't IOS 7 work on an iPhone 3GS?
https://discussions.apple.com/...
When apple does it, it is fine because the hardware is "too old for the new OS" but when android does the same thing for similar reasons "Few Android phones get more then one update". There is a huge difference between Android and IOS. Apple makes both the hardware and software. It is not a function of "android" when hardware manufacturers don't release new updates for their devices, that is the manufacturers doing that.
BTW, How many updates did the 3GS get before it was EOL?
You said "Apple OS updates are free of charge". OSX updates were not always free of charge.
PS, Apple did a similar "EOL" for Mavericks, two models, released fairly close together, one gets the update the other doesn't.
"Quite possibly. Neither of us have Apple TV, and it's not what we were talking about."
Really, so because this device does 'auto updates' it is OK because here are no third party risks? isn't the same true for all IOS devices since they all use the app store? -
Re:Avoid taking it in the backdoor
It's in beta. It's likely to be open sourced once it's ready. Apple have far more to gain than to lose by doing so, and in such circumstances Apple does release source. Expect to find it here:
Of course it won't be GPL though. It'll be one of the truly free licenses, such as BSD.
-
Re: poorly
Man, you work for Apple's PR department or what?
1) The updates are actually made available, and promptly, unlike Android.
What exactly does this mean? Android has updates as well. (FUD on your part)?
2) The users are all informed that they are available, and the installation made simple.
Yeah, because clicking on the "update" box in android is challenging?
3) All OS updates are free of charge.
Perhaps true now, but in the past apple charged a fee for its updates.
4) There's a buzz around new versions. Not just amongst enthusiasts and tech media, but in the mainstream media.
Some call it buzz, others call it hype.
Apple TV doesn't just download them, it installs as well, unless Apple's website is incorrect in which case you can have them update it with the correct info.
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht...
Keep your Apple TV always up to date by automatically installing software updates when available. -

Re:Apple Actually Cares About Privacy
The reason is that for Apple, you are the customer. For Google, you are the product, because its customers are the advertisers.
Stop that rubbish, the privacy policies make it pretty clear:
"At times Apple may make certain personal information available to strategic partners that work with Apple to provide products and services, or that help Apple market to customers."
http://www.apple.com/legal/privacy/en-ww/"We may share aggregated, non-personally identifiable information publicly and with our partners – like publishers, advertisers or connected sites."
http://www.google.com/policies/privacy/So if you want to show where "you are the product" then go right ahead, from what I can see they both do pretty much the same thing and anything that goes out to 3rd parties outside the reach of these companies' policies is non-personal information.

Re:Exceptions
So far as I can see, the default is non-nullable. They actually had to add some hacks to the language to enable this while also allowing for circular dependencies between objects that must be defined during initialization (the syntax Foo! is same as Foo?, but allows to treat the value as if it were non-optional, with a runtime exception when it's nil - basically the standard behavior for Java/C#/Obj-C).

Re:None of the baggage of C?
According to https://developer.apple.com/li... Swift includes several C pointer types.
C Syntax ---- Swift Syntax
void * ------ COpaquePointer
Type * ------ UnsafePointer
Type ** ----- AutoreleasingUnsafePointerThere are several more C pointer types on that page, but you get the flavor. You can take that C baggage into your room, unpack it, and make it all home-like.

Did none of you watch the keynote?

$649?!?!?!
An unlocked and contract free iPhone 5S starts at $649!
For a phone.
A phone.
Something MUCH more cost effective would be to get an iPad 2 or Mini and just use Facetime to call home. And then get some local phone for using over there and the combination of the iPad 2 and (local) phone would be MUCH less than $649.
And I bet she'd be much happier with it - and there's less of a chance of some locally purchased flip phone would get stolen.
-
Re:A new programming language
Wow your complaint about immutability here and in the discussion about the language specifically is really really beating a horse for no good reason. The immutability of the array as a whole and the content of each slot is orthogonal; you can have an immutable array of mutable objects, or an immutable array of immutable objects, or a mutable array of immutable objects (although that creates gotchas on grow and shrink ops on the array).
Orthogonality is usually good, and the swift approach makes sense when you consider the memory layout in a box and arrow diagram SICP-style (which, given that the types you are complaining about are very Scheme-like, is a good place to start reading; nobody familiar with RnRS | n >= 3 or Common Lisp is remotely likely to be confused at all about the semantics of swift arrays).
If anything, you could raise a doc bug asking for greater clarity and more examples. http://bugreporter.apple.com/ will get you better results than whining on
/. Really. I'm not going to raise the bug for you (I don't even agree there is one). -
Unlocked iPhone 5s does it all
O2 and Vodaphone appear to use LTE band 20 (SOURCE: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L...) AT&T and Canadian carriers generally seem to use bands 4 and 17 (same source).
The iPhone 5s does all of those and more. Model A1533 (GSM)*: UMTS/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1700/2100, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz); LTE (Bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 13, 17, 19, 20, 25)
(Source: https://www.apple.com/iphone-5... )
I may be missing something but just buying an unlocked iPhone 5S from apple seems to give you all the LTE, HSPA, etc networks you could use in the UK and USA/Canada.
-
Re:iPhone 5S
None of the US variants of the 5S supports UK 4G.
-
Not a phone, but...
The latest iPad Air made some news in the tech circles when it came out for it's 4G capabilities. It was the first time Apple was able to use 100% identical hardware for AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, and T-Mobile. In fact, baring some stupidity in provisioning departments, it's possible to buy one, get SIM's from the other three, and have a 4-provider iPad in the US.
The specs:
UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1700/2100, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)
CDMA EV-DO Rev. A and Rev. B (800, 1900 MHz)
LTE (Bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 13, 17, 18, 19, 20, 25, 26)
Based on my reading at the time, due to the power and antenna requirements there were no phones that had the same laundry list of 4G bands. Of course that was ~1 year ago now, and time moves pretty fast in the mobile world. The reason I post this though is the iPad Air makes a killer 4G hotspot, 24 hours of battery life with the screen off. Maybe a 3G world phone and an iPad Air for high speed data are a viable solution? The iPad also is sold unlocked from Apple, no extra charge. Phones will likely have carrier locking issues.

Re:Good bye source compatibility
Here's a document about how C data types and pointers map to swift. It looks reasonably straightforward.
https://developer.apple.com/li...
I don't really see myself using the language because it's locked to one platform, but the sky is not falling. I'm sure we'll see swift-wrappers for popular C and C++ libraries popping up all over the place.
-
Re:Good bye source compatibility
Qt does not (and cannot) support Windows "Metro." By the same token it won't be able to support this new environment
Nah, this isn't something like metro. Swift is just another language, not a new runtime.
Swift actually has good interoperability with C and ObjC. You can link precompiled libraries or just drop C code into your project, #import the header files, and call C functions directly from swift or vice-versa.
https://developer.apple.com/li...
Alas, it doesn't have the same interoperability with C++. Apple recommends creating a C or ObjC wrapper for C++ libraries, which doesn't sound awesome.
However, QT already links with cocoa, apple's ObjC / Swift interface. Cocoa isn't going anywhere, so QT won't be going anywhere.
