Re:There will be no response
I don't think they have to stream the MP3s - they could be using Safari's persistent storage.
In any case, on my Android phone I use Subsonic and get decent battery life. Subsonic streams music from your home server, but in practice it spends a few seconds downloading each song and the data connection sleeps for most of the time you are listening. I also use Pandora and find it to be acceptable.

Re:Awesome
Sorry to say, your part of the less than 1% of people that care about this. Nokia doesn't want 1%, they want a viable share of the world market. Making phones unlockable is not their priority and having it on Linux doesn't sell more phones than it being MS or Black Berry OS.
I love the fact that they released blue prints for 3d printers. This is without a doubt a marketing move but I have yet to see Apple do the same thing.
Though I'm not a fan of "the use it the way we intended, or die a death of 1,000 cuts through our inflexible configuration" mentality of Apple, they do make some awesome decisions when it comes to marketing. For quite some time they have been providing specs on their devices for case designers. I suspect this is to help encourage the whole Apple ecosystem. You can find all the specs over at the Apple Developers Page
A quick search over at The Thingiverse yields many printable cases based on these specs.
I wish other manufactuers such as Samsung, HTC and LG would release their designs specs. Instead I'm left here with my vernie calipers and a crapload of guessing.

And here's the paper in HTML
If one were to rank comparable classes between the U.S. and the rest of the world, U.S. scores would rise to 4th from 14th in reading (PDF) and to 10th from 25th in math."
Or, if you prefer:
If one were to rank comparable classes between the U.S. and the rest of the world, U.S. scores would rise to 4th from 14th in reading (HTML) and to 10th from 25th in math."
The HTML version includes some links, including a link to a response to a PISA response to the paper, including the PISA response itself (PDF).
(I didn't check all the pages to make sure the HTML version was complete - the last page of the PDF says "page 99" - but I did a quick-and-dirty hack, wherein I selected all the text in the HTML version, copied it and pbpasted it to a file, did the same with the PDF version, applied a tr hack (tr -cs "[:alpha:]" "\n", as per the man page), and then ran wc -w on both files; it reported 45040 for the HTML version and 45596 for the PDF version, so, unless one of those steps severely mangled the document, they're probably the same.)

Re:a friendlier game than scrabble...
Though I've never actually played the physical version of this game, I've heard of it, and was wondering a while ago if there were an iOS version of this game.
I just searched, and there is a free (ad supported) and a paid version. Unfortunately it's not by Zynga (so doesn't share the same people you play with).

I haven't even TRIED this app yet, but the reviews look good.
I have no affiliation with it.

Re:Apple
Please look it up. Note that both the weight and matching screen resolution are non-negotiable. A laptop that's +1lb heavier or relies on 1024x768 max resolution will not count as a MacBook Air equivalent.
Let's compare the 13.3" MB Air:
1400x900 screen
2.96lbs
7 hours usagevsThinkpad X1 Carbon:
14" 1600x900 screen
2.99lbs
8 hours usage
So, better or equal in every respect. Not only that, if you don't mind an extra 0.4lbs you can get it with a touch screen.Errm, let's ignore that you think that heavier is better in a notebook. Your problem is that you blindly believe the battery time Lienovo gives. http://www.laptopmag.com/reviews/laptops/lenovo-thinkpad-x1-carbon-touch.aspx
Battery Life
Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Touch UltrabookClick to EnlargeThis is going to sound disappointingly familiar to anyone who has read our reviews of Windows 8 Ultrabooks, but, like the rest, the X1 Carbon offers below-average battery life. In the LAPTOP Battery Test, which involves continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi on 40-percent brightness, the X1 Carbon Touch lasted 5 hours and 52 minutes. That run time is not only 18 minutes shorter than the typical ultraportable (6:10), but nearly 2 hours behind the X1 Carbon powered by Windows 7 without touch (7:45).
... Better scores came from non-touch ultraportables, such as the UX31A (6:28) and the MacBook Air (8:10).IOW:nope.

Re:i would sue
Wait, cell towers have nothing to do with GPS, other than supplying almanac data. This Almanac data helps the phone locate the satellites faster.
The only time the address of the cell tower would come into play is if the owner or the thief shut off the GPS.
End users can't get the location of their cell phone without installing some software ahead of time, Such as Lookout or Find My IPhone.
Further, If the owner turns their GPS off, or the thief turns it off, those apps would only be able to report a rough triangulation of the last known position IF ANYTHING at all.
Neither Sprint nor Clark County can be responsible here, the company making the App is at fault if it is reporting a location that was based ONLY on the last tower it saw, without making this clear to the owner checking the web for their phone's location.

Re:So what is Apple actually accused of?
In Europe there is a consumer law that demands that the sales person of a electronics device is required to give 2 years guarantee for free.
So what our consumer-organisation is suing for is that apple only give 1 year and sells the other year for a profit while this should be free.
(Or roughly something like that)Than your consumer-organisation would be a bunch of morons, because Apple will most certainly grant the two year EU Statutory Warranty if they are the seller (and if they aren't, then that's non of their business anyway).

Know Your Implied Statutory Warranty Rights
In some countries (your mileage may vary) there is an implied statutory warranty that the product will operate properly for the reasonable lifetime of the product. This is ADDITIONAL TO the express manufacturer's warranty. It doesn't cover wear and tear and obviously doesn't cover abuse either, but does mean the product must function properly and do what it is supposed to do. If it doesn't, you are entitled to a remedy: a refund, replacement, etc., to be mutually agreed between you and the seller.
Most consumers are ignorant of their statutory warranty rights, so when a manufacturer provides a 12 month warranty consumers think if it breaks a day after that they aren't covered. Not true, though they may have to approach the manufacturer directly instead of the retailer. Another is that when a manufacturer advertises "a lifetime warranty" you already have one by law anyway, so they are only telling you what they have to give you anyway. And finally it means that Extended Warranties are usually a complete waste of money: They are getting you to pay for a right you already have by law anyway.
Again, your mileage may vary. Talk to your local consumer affairs bureau to find your local rules. Be warned that retailers can be real pricks about warranties , and sometimes consumer affairs will need to come in with a baseball bat and remind them if your statutory rights. Manufacturers would prefer it if you didn't know any of this. Also sometimes a manufacturer will insist you pay for return shipping or drop off at your own expense. Check your local laws: they might be obliged to pick up the cost or do this for you.

One bonus tip for reading this far: Merchants often trick people into accepting warranties with clauses waiving your statutory rights, no returns signs and the like. It often works by dissuading from trying, but if it goes to a small claims court the judge will draw a big line through them. -

Re:My dad once purchased Apple Care
A warranty covers defects, and Applecare explicitly says that this covers "Defects arising after customer takes delivery" (contrast with statutory warranties which usually only cover inherent defects - not that I'm saying this isn't an inherent defect, my point is that Applecare you shouldn't even have to argue whether or not it's inherent as it should be covered either way).
Unless you're accusing the grandparent's dad of secretly neglecting his iPad, this is clearly a defect.

Re:Time to ask some hard questions
Some security software actually does just that (to varying degrees). For example: Little Snitch, Gatekeeper (classic Mac OS), Gatekeeper (OS X), and so on.
The problem is that it's really hard to identify certain types of attacks in that way. For example, if there were a security hole in a web browser, unless the attacker modifies the browser to send data over a port other than port 80 or port 443, any side channel retransmission of your data is likely to be entirely transparent to any sort of external profiling that you could reasonably do. This is why it is so critically important to make sure that web browser code is, in fact, robust against attacks to begin with.
This is also arguably a valid reason for moving away from general-purpose browsers for high-security transactions, and using separate apps instead. For example, a banking app would be whitelisted for the bank, period, and if it tried to communicate with any other server, that would be suspicious.
Or we could just pass a law requiring that all financial transactions be signed using a non-Internet-connected PK crypto dongle and be done with it, but I digress.

Re:How many developers?
Yeah, great to be one of those 10000. Sucks to be one of other 265000 ("275,000 registered iOS developers in the U.S." sez Apple's site), though.
-
Re:How many developers?
A straight up average is inappropriate, as there are some massive outliers. Take a look at the top paid apps: http://www.apple.com/itunes/charts/paid-apps/
It's overwhelmingly games. And of these top 100 apps, developers like Rovio and EA are overrepresented. Meaning if your app isn't a game and your company isn't Rovio, you're probably not making much at all. Rovio and EA on the other hand are probably making well over $700,000. -
Re:How many developers?
There are 275,000 registered developers in the USA alone (source: Apple). Even with an unrealistic 300K world-wide estimation, the average is less than $7000. Of course, your average developer won't even come close to that figure, as a few key players such as Rovio, EA, or Gameloft would grab a massive part of the pie for themselves.
In other words, the gold rush is dead. There is still the occasional success story (Apple likes those stories and routinely puts some indie title in a featured space) but there are a vast, vast number of mostly fine apps and games that will never recover the development costs.
It is still very possible to make money in the app store, but the rules are now similar to any other market: expend wisely your arm and your leg in marketing, and pray you acquisition cost per user is justified by the returns. In other words, you need to be a publisher with big pockets or be prepared to give your soul to one. And be wary of publishers in mobile. In a brick-and-mortar world, shelf space is limited and publishers don't like to release a title that sells nothing, so at least they'll make some marketing effort most of the time. Not necessarily the case in mobile.

Re:Does Microsoft make bad versions deliberately?
Full Screen as an example. The metrics told them that users spent 95% of their time "in full screen". By this I think he meant maximized. This is why metro apps are full screen. This seemingly minor distinction between maximized and full screen apparently means nothing to Microsoft, but has a lot of implications for the user.
Not trying to Troll (honest!), but that's why when Apple saw the same "metric" and decided to create a similar feature in OS X (many months before Windows 8's debut), they let individual Apps, rather than the OS, decide whether they would offer a "Full Screen" (as opposed to "Maximized") mode. Then, they allowed the User (rather than the OS) decide at a whim whether they would use an App in "Full Screen", or not.
That's the difference between putting yourself in the Users' shoes, as opposed to forcing the User to submit to your (perhaps annoying) UI peccadillos. -
Re:DRM-free largely stops at 1922
You could buy my book. No one has complained it's not "professional-quality." I specifically requested no DRM from Amazon. It can be done. It's easy. Amazon doesn't require it, it's up to the publisher, and since the publisher is me, and I think DRM is stupid, I made it DRM-free. Just because I'm not a big name yet doesn't mean I can't produce a worthwhile piece of entertainment that stands equal to the best of what's available. If I were a big name, writing for a big publisher, I would demand DRM-free, since it doesn't matter how big you are, DRM is always stupid. Of course it's also available in paper form, for those who prefer it that way.
Links:
Amazon Kindle version of Cerberon
Printed version from Amazon
And if you prefer it from someone other than Amazon:
Lulu totally device agnostic DRM-free epub from Lulu. Wil Wheaton told me to use them.
B&N Nook version (also DRM-free, as far as I'm aware).
Apple iTunes iBook version, despite the fact that iDespise iTunes.
Createspace printed version, which is also Amazon, but gives me a better commission if people buy it here.
Straight from me, half the book as a free preview. DRM-free epub, of course.Apologies for the advertisement, but you asked.

Vitamin D deficiency, MD, and gender differences?
Could boys perhaps be more susceptible to vitamin D deficiency and mitochondrial dysfunction? http://www.vitamindcouncil.org/health-conditions/neurological-conditions/autism/
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dr-mark-hyman/autism-research-discovery_b_794967.htmlOne of the reasons we homeschool/unschool is that school especially these days push intense academics on all kids way too early, and boys especially suffer for that. Echoing your point, at least one study I've heard of shows that the focus on early academics is depriving children of the early experiences they need in nature and with water and sandboxes that kids need to later have an intuition about scientific and engineering things (so that they know what the symbols for mass, force, volume, rates of change, and so on actually physically represent).

http://www.thewaronkids.com/Almost any school is filled with large numbers of well-meaning good-hearted hard-working adults who really care about children. The problem is they and the children are trapped in "an abstraction that has escaped its handlers":

http://www.the-open-boat.com/Gatto.htmlHere is a psychologist saying the only reason affluent kids do better on math is that their parents teach it to them since most schools are terrible at teaching it:
http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/freedom-learn/201003/when-less-is-more-the-case-teaching-less-math-in-schoolsThe iPad has a lot of math-learning games for it that your son might like. We just got several for our kid. Here is one:

There are lots of interactive online resources for learning math of course, and PC simulation environments like "Scratch", and lots of other such tools you can use together with your kid (like geometry related ones).
Just watch out from becoming even more vitamin D deficient by being even more inside using fascinating computing gadgets. A focus on early academics instead of outdoor play also harms kids in that sense. My speculation about that:

It's already started, for the past year they've done nothing but ride the high of their earlier success. Resorting to this kind of tactics instead of better marketing and improving relationships with other companies, tells us one more thing. They have nothing in the works.
No. Nothing at all...
Just:
New Desktops and Laptops with the highest-resolution displays on the planet.
New "Fusion" hybrid SSD/Spinning-Platter Drives for these new computers, with innovative support baked into OS X. TWO new generations of 10" iPad.
iPad mini.
iPhone 5.
New iPod Touch
Completely New iPod Nano
Entirely new (and innovative) position-agnostic connector system for all their mobile devices. along with several adapters for VGA output, etc.
New, improved Earbuds.
New version of OS X (Mountain Lion), with over 200 New Features.

Re:You don't
Posting A/C because I gots mod points and I used one. I'm actually evil_aaronm.
That said, bugger off. This kind of "zero tolerance" begets "100% stupidity." The feature is in a language for a reason and it's very much like a gun: in the wrong hands, it can be dangerous. It all depends on the user.
For example: http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#documentation/DeviceDrivers/Conceptual/WorkingWSerial/WWSerial_SerialDevs/SerialDevices.html%23//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP30000384-CIHGEAFD See listing 1-7 and how they handle errors via goto. Sure, you could put the error handling routine in each instance, but it's so much cleaner as they have it. There's absolutely nothing wrong with suitable use of goto and I'd gladly tell you where to stuff your warning if you gave me one just for the cause of using a goto. -
Re:leap year
Christ. Year after year, iOS alarm clock, DND, or something breaks on new years, leap year, DST, or something.
IT JUST WORKS!!!!!

Re:Google should give it to them
But I have to ask why would Google let Apple do it but not Microsoft?
They didn't let Apple use their API. The iOS YouTube app is made by Google https://itunes.apple.com/en/app/youtube/id544007664?mt=8 MS should ask Google to develop an app for their phones instead of complaining for the wrong reasons. Anyway I bet this is part of an ongoing negotiation so we shouldn't worry much about it.

Re:Ditching strong partners -- smart move!
I've heard there are problems with some LG-make screens but not everyone is running into the store for an exchange. The nice thing is Apple is exchanging them if you notice a problem. I wouldn't call it a fiasco.
I presume you've read this, then?

You can start from page 420 (heh), and go backwards.

Re:Ditching strong partners -- smart move!
At first I thought this was a hyperbole or just some anecdote, but it seems to be a legitimate issue: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4034848

Re:Why no iPad user "wish lists"?
...a gamer should buy an iPhone, the games on iOS...
Err...no. Perhaps I wasn't clear. I was talking about gamers. You know, the people who have a computer that cost more than your car, with a graphics card that can render the texture of each individual grain of sand on a beach. Real hardcore gamers, the ones who lose themselves in the strategy and mechanics of whatever "their" game is.
And while I appreciate that Angry Birds (Gamer Edition) may seem a compelling reason to drop anywhere from $649-$849, when the choice is between a new set of solid state drives for their RAID array and a phone, which do you think the gamer will pick?

Re:It's just a big scam to make Windows 9 look goo
Really? Lets take that for a test run shall we?
Standard 27" iMac is $1800, has 2.9Ghz i5, 8GB, 1TB, 512MB Video.
http://store.apple.com/us/configure/MD095LL/A?Dell's closest I could find was one XPS One 27 Touch. $1600, 2.7Ghz i5, 6GB, 1TB, Intel Integrated Graphics.
http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?oc=fxdwvx25h&model_id=xps-one-27-2710-aio&c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19HP's closest I could find was the HP Z1 Workstation, $2150, Xeon E3 3.3Ghz, 4GB, 500GB, Intel Integrated Graphics.

Even getting a more expensive iMac with a 3.4Ghz i7 is only $2200, and it includes a 1GB Nvidia Graphics instead of the Intel Integrated Graphics.
